Virtual escape rooms in anatomy education: case studies from two institutions.

Virtual escape rooms (ERs) require learners to solve puzzles and answer riddles while trying to "escape" a digital room. Although the educational merit of such gamified learning activities continues to be realized, guides on the development of ERs are lacking, as well as student perceptions on how, if, and where they should be integrated into medical curricula. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the experiences of building anatomy-themed virtual ERs of differing formats at two separate institutions, Queen's University Belfast (QUB) and Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (

Continuing professional development in general dentistry-experiences of an online flipped classroom.

INTRODUCTION: Continuing professional development is a lifelong learning process. One pedagogical approach that can be used is active learning. Flipped classroom is a method that has been shown to improve deeper conceptual understanding. In an online setting, the method saves travel, time, and costs. To our knowledge, flipped classroom is rarely used in continuing professional education. This study in general dentistry explored experiences of an online flipped classroom course in continuing professional development. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen dental hygienists, clinically active in genera

[Online training for hearing implant surgery : A new approach to otological training. German version].

OBJECTIVE: Education in microsurgery of the ear includes staged training to allow for mastering of the complex microsurgical procedures, particularly in the context of middle ear reconstruction and cochlear implantation. Traditional surgical training includes temporal bone preparations by cadaver dissection and supervised operating room practice. As these on-site trainings are limited, there is a need to broaden education facilities in an on-line format. Therefore, a first basic on-line training for otosurgery was developed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The system consists of an artificial temporal

Exploring the effects of an online learning platform in stage III cardiac rehabilitation for individuals with coronary heart disease: Randomized controlled study.

The objective of this study is to assess the influence of blended education methodologies, utilizing an online education platform, among stage III cardiac rehabilitation (CR) patients diagnosed with coronary heart disease (CHD). Between June and August 2021, a cohort of 90 patients diagnosed with CHD, previously discharged from a second-class hospital 1 year earlier, were randomly allocated into 2 groups: the experimental and control groups, with each comprising 45 patients. Patients in the control group received out-of-hospital CR education via WeChat, while those in the experimental group re

Evaluating a Photogrammetry-Based Video for Undergraduate Anatomy Education.

Modern anatomy education has benefitted from the development of a wide range of digital 3D resources in the past decades, but the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has sparked an additional demand for high-quality online learning resources. Photogrammetry provides a low-cost technique for departments to create their own photo-realistic 3D models of cadaveric specimens. However, to ensure accessibility, the design of the resulting learning resources should be carefully considered. We aimed to address this by creating a video based on a photogrammetry model of a cadaveric human lung. Students eval

Transitioning to a new era: Future directions for staff development during COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic created an urgent need for staff development. However, COVID-19 has created many challenges, including the inability to meet in-person, travel restrictions to conferences, overwhelming clinical demands on already overextended faculty members and the increased need to focus on personal health and safety. Although current challenges were immediately met with solutions borne out of an emergency, questions remain on how to identify and sustain best practices and further evolve staff development beyond the immediate crisis. Reviewing the Medical Adaptations series revealed sev

Fetal endoscopic telesurgery using an Internet Protocol connection: clinical and technical challenges.

Until recently, fetoscopic laser surgery to seal the placental anastomoses that cause severe twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome has been available in only a few centres worldwide. The technique typically takes a long time to learn. We have used a dedicated Internet Protocol (IP) connection for tele-education to assist the introduction of fetoscopic laser surgery to Australia. During the implementation of the international telemedicine link, there were multiple clinical and technical problems, which were eventually overcome. The quality of images and of video-sequences was comparable to that sup

An online educational model in andrology for student training in the art of scientific writing in the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the suspension of the annual Summer Internship at the American Center for Reproductive Medicine (ACRM). To transit it into an online format, an inaugural 6-week 2020 ACRM Online Mentorship Program was developed focusing on five core pillars of andrology research: scientific writing, scientific methodology, plagiarism understanding, soft skills development and mentee basic andrology knowledge. This study aims to determine mentee developmental outcomes based on student surveys and discuss these within the context of the relevant teaching and learning methodo

Advancing Open-Access Education for the Surgical Team Worldwide: The Development and Rollout of the United Nations Global Surgery Learning Hub (SURGhub).

PROBLEM: Training and professional development programs for surgeons, anesthetists, obstetricians, and perioperative nurses in low-resource settings are often constrained by lack of access to appropriate training materials. Potential learners looking to access online content are faced with internet connectivity issues, difficulties in finding and accessing resources, resources that are inappropriate for their context and training, and opaque content quality control processes. APPROACH: The United Nations Global Surgery Learning Hub (SURGhub) was launched on June 28, 2023 to address this need.
