"I am proud to be a midwife because I save a lot of lives": survey and interviews with graduates of International Medical Corps' midwifery education programme in South Sudan.

South Sudan has extremely high maternal mortality, driven, in part, by an underfunded health system and a shortage of trained health workers. Skilled birth attendants are essential to reducing maternal mortality. International Medical Corps supports competency-based midwifery education in three schools in South Sudan, offering a 2.5-year certificate and a 3-year diploma aligned with international standards for midwifery practice. A mixed-methods evaluation was conducted to assess the strengths and challenges of the midwifery education programme to inform programme improvement. This manuscript

Participation in driver education/training courses during graduated driver licensing, and the effect of a time-discount on subsequent traffic offenses: Findings from the New Zealand Drivers Study.

INTRODUCTION: The New Zealand GDL includes a time-discount at the restricted license stage, for attendance at an approved driver education course. This is despite international evidence showing that earlier licensure associated with a time-discount can increase risk for newly licensed drivers. OBJECTIVE: To examine participation in driver education courses and especially those that qualify for a time-discount; compare the profiles of course participants with non-participants; examine reasons for participation; and examine the association between a time-discount and traffic offenses once fully

Investigating the Range of Symptom Endorsement at Initiation of a Graduated Return-to-Play Protocol After Concussion and Duration of the Protocol: A Study From the National Collegiate Athletic Association-Department of Defense Concussion, Assessment, Research, and Education (CARE) Consortium.

BACKGROUND: Organizations recommend that athletes should be asymptomatic or symptom-limited before initiating a graduated return-to-play (GRTP) protocol after sports-related concussion, although asymptomatic or symptom-limited is not well-defined. HYPOTHESES: (1) There will be a range (ie, beyond zero as indicator of "symptom-free") in symptom severity endorsement when athletes are deemed ready to initiate a GRTP protocol. (2) Baseline symptom severity scores and demographic/preinjury medical history factors influence symptom severity scores at the commencement of the GRTP protocol. (3) Great

Impact of maternal education level on live birth rate after in vitro fertilization in China: a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: To assess the association between maternal education level and live birth after in vitro fertilization (IVF). METHODS: We studied women who underwent the first cycle of fresh or frozen-thawed embryo transfer between 2014 and 2019. Women were divided into four educational categories according to the level of education received (elementary school graduate or less, middle school graduate, high school graduate, college graduate or higher). The live birth rate was compared between different education level groups. We used logistic regression to analyze the association between maternal edu

Lessons learned: Shaping the evolution of veterinary specialty education.

In response to concerns regarding numerous complex issues facing the veterinary specialty profession, several organizations, including the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, have made a clarion call to the American Veterinary Medical Association to begin discussions surrounding the formation of an accrediting body for internships, residencies, and fellowships. A proposed name for such a body is the Accreditation Council on Graduate Veterinary Medical Education, in alignment with the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME); the term "graduate" refers to specia

Can greater reliance on test scores ameliorate the association between family background and access to post-collegiate education? Survey evidence from the Beijing College Students Panel survey.

We evaluate whether greater reliance on test scores may reduce the extent of educational inequality by family origin as college graduates seek entrance to graduate school. In this article, we present a case study using survey data of colleges in Beijing, China, where students' performance in standardized graduate school entrance examination (the GSEE) is the primary determinant for the entrance to graduate school. Using multiple waves of the Beijing College Students Panel Survey (BCSPS), we fit a series of models to capture the correlations of family socio-economic status (SES) with the probab

What Regulatory Requirements and Existing Structures Must Change If Competency-Based, Time-Variable Training Is Introduced Into the Continuum of Medical Education in the United States?

As competency-based medical education is adopted across the training continuum, discussions regarding time-variable medical education have gained momentum, raising important issues that challenge the current regulatory environment and infrastructure of both undergraduate and graduate medical education in the United States. Implementing time-variable medical training will require recognizing, revising, and potentially reworking the multiple existing structures and regulations both internal and external to medical education that are not currently aligned with this type of system. In this article

Core content for venous and Lymphatic Medicine: 2022 revision.

The core content for a medical specialty outlines the scope of the discipline as well as the categories of knowledge considered essential to practice in the field. It provides a template for the development of curricula for medical school, graduate, and postgraduate education, as well as for creating certification standards. Venous and Lymphatic Medicine (VLM) is a specialty that has benefitted from contributions from specialists from several medical disciplines. Optimally, the societies, boards, and residency review committees representing these disciplines would uniformly recognize the scope

Holistic versus actuarial student selection.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2003 in the Gratz et al. v. Bollinger et al. and the Grutter v. Bollinger et al. cases that affirmative action selection policies aimed at student diversity in higher and professional education are acceptable on constitutional grounds. The court also ruled that "holistic," "individualized" selection procedures, not "mechanical" methods, must be used to achieve student diversity goals. SUMMARY: This brief essay reviews and critiques professional and academic literature that addresses the two court cases and their likely sequelae. The weight of scient

New graduate nurses' transition to practice: A longitudinal quantitative analysis of factors that impact workplace performance.

BACKGROUND: The transition from a student to a professional nurse is challenging; these challenges are well-documented, namely, imposter syndrome, anxiety, and perceived incompetence. Internationally programs have been established to support new graduate nurses during initial employment. However, very little quantitative data is available that differentiates the composite factors that impact graduate progression during their first year of employment. Exploration of factors associated with new graduate nurses' progress is warranted. AIM: This study explored associations of individual demograph
