Impacts of continuing education for health professionals in primary health care: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Continuing Health Education (CHE) is an essential strategy for the continuous qualification of Primary Health Care (PHC) professionals, promoting knowledge updating and improving the quality of services. In Brazil, this process is especially relevant given the challenges faced by the Unified Health System (SUS) and the need for training aligned with local demands. Understanding the impact of CHE actions in PHC is crucial to identify their effects on professional practice and health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To identify and analyze the evidence on the impacts of CHE for health profess

Evaluation of the Impact of an Online Opioid Education Program for Acute Pain Management.

OBJECTIVE: The University of Washington instituted a policy requiring all credentialed clinicians who prescribe opioids to complete a one-time education activity about safe and responsible opioid prescribing. A scenario-based, interactive online learning module was developed for opioid management of acute pain in hospitalized adults. This study examined the impact of the education module on learners' knowledge, perceived competence, and use of guideline-adherent practices. METHODS: Clinicians who completed the education module participated in a voluntary de-identified online survey approximat

Health professionals' factual knowledge and changing attitudes toward transsexuals.

General practitioners (GPs), obstetrician-gynecologists, urologists, psychiatrists and clinical psychologists (total N = 202) were randomly surveyed to assess their knowledge of the syndrome of transsexuality and their attitudes toward transsexual patients and sex reassignment surgery. A low return rate, though, requires that the present data be interpreted prudently. Where possible, the current findings were compared with the attitudinal data published in 1966 by Green, Stoller and MacAndrew. Over this interval an increasingly liberal and favorable trend in attitudes was noted amongst all med

Autonomy-Supportive Teaching Enhances Prosocial and Reduces Antisocial Behavior via Classroom Climate and Psychological Needs: A Multilevel Randomized Control Intervention.

Autonomy-supportive teaching increases prosocial and decreases antisocial behavior. Previous research showed that these effects occur because autonomy-supportive teaching improves students' need states (a student-level process). However, the present study investigated whether these effects also occur because autonomy-supportive teaching improves the classroom climate (a classroom-level process). Teachers from 80 physical education classrooms were randomly assigned to participate (or not) in an autonomy-supportive teaching intervention, while their 2,227 secondary-grade students reported their

School Concussion Policy in Colorado: Lack of Knowledge and Access Are Barriers to Education.

All states have youth sports concussion laws that have helped shape school concussion policy. However, state laws do not specify how schools distribute policy. The present study examined parent, youth, and school personnel's knowledge of school concussion policy in Colorado and ease of access to policy via school website. Youth (n = 1,987), parents (n = 520), and school personnel (n = 130) completed an online survey about knowledge of their schools' concussion policy. Less than half of parents (48.9%) and students (43.0%) knew their school had a policy. School personnel were aware of the polic

Management of infections in hospital employees.

Hospital employees are often exposed to infectious diseases, both within and outside of the hospital. Susceptible personnel are at risk of acquiring infection and are a possible source of infection for patients, other employees and members of their households. In recent years epidemics in hospitals due to rubella, pertussis, hepatitis B and Legionnaires' disease have included infection transmitted to and from personnel. A comprehensive plan for management of hospital personnel exposed to communicable diseases should include the following: (1) protocols for the management of each of the common

An innovative approach to training hospital-based clinicians for bioterrorist attacks.

The recent attacks of September 11, 2001, and the subsequent dissemination event of anthrax in the United States demonstrated the necessity for hospitals to initiate bioterrorism education for clinicians. Events such as the release of sarin gas into the Tokyo subway by the Aum Shinrikyo cult provided some insight into how quickly emergency medical personnel may be overwhelmed by causalities of unconventional weapons. Educational interventions to prepare hospital-based practitioners for such disasters must fit among the demands of patient care, administrative duties, and continuing education wi

Nourishing collaboration: interdisciplinary nutrition education for health care professionals.

Nutrition education remains insufficient in many health care professional training programs despite the central role of diet in the prevention and management of chronic disease. Contemporary nutrition science increasingly recognizes that dietary behaviors and health outcomes are shaped by complex interactions among biological, behavioral, environmental, and food system factors. This perspective proposes an interdisciplinary framework for nutrition education that integrates the complementary expertise of physicians, dietitians, chefs, and farmers. By bridging clinical care, nutrition science, c

Anesthesia for Children With Craniofacial Abnormalities in the Developing Countries: Challenges and Future Directions.

Interest in global health to provide safer pediatric surgical care in developing countries has increased during the last decade. A collaborative effort between surgeons and anesthesiologists has provided the opportunity to deliver specialized care to children, particularly in the areas of cleft lip and palate repair. However, medical resources, facilities, and adequately trained personnel, especially in pediatric anesthesia, are often limited in these countries. Challenges, educational efforts, and future directions for the globalization of anesthesia are discussed. Involvement of internationa

Early childhood education: a means to earlier diagnosis of hearing impairment in the multihandicapped.

Detection of congenital or infantile hearing loss is often delayed in otherwise normal children, but even greater delays occur in the multihandicapped. Neonatal hearing screening and high risk register techniques have not had universal acceptance. A collaborative project between medical school otology and audiology personnel and a school for multihandicapped children under the age of 3 years in the Department of Special Education in another university has significantly reduced detection time and provided speech, language and other remedial therapy while otologic diagnosis and educational funct

Self-rated readiness for performance of needle decompression in combat lifesaver training.

BACKGROUND: The Combat Lifesaver course taught to nonmedical personnel includes instruction on performing needle thoracostomy to decompress tension pneumothorax, the second leading cause of preventable combat death. Although the Tactical Combat Casualty Care curriculum is pushed to the lowest level of battlefield first responders, the instruction of this advanced procedure is routinely limited to a verbal block of instruction with a standardized presentation. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the confidence of nonmedical personnel in their preparation to perform a needle thor

A study on the effect of patient and community education in prevention of disability programme.

The effect of self-care learning by leprosy patients in prevention of disabilities was studied by adapting two strategies in two subcentres of a project in South India, one through patient education by trained field staff and the other through community education involving trained animators and health committees. One of the subcentres was taken as control where neither of the strategies was employed. In terms of results, though both the strategies were found to be effective in containing occurrence of new deformities among high risk patients and healing of trophic ulcers in hands and feet, str

Harmonisation and implementation of sports-related concussion guidelines in European youth football: the REFORM Erasmus+ project.

INTRODUCTION: Sports-related concussions (SRCs) are frequently under-reported in youth sports, especially football, due to limited awareness, inconsistent reporting practices and a lack of medical personnel at the grassroots level. Concussion management protocols vary widely across regions, highlighting the need for a standardised approach. This study aims to harmonise SRC education and management practices in European youth football through an interdisciplinary collaboration involving football associations, healthcare professionals and academic institutions from Norway, Germany, Croatia and T

Using a systems thinking approach to understand teachers perceptions and use of assistive technology in the republic of Ireland.

PURPOSE: Assistive technology (AT) enables and promotes inclusion and participation, especially for persons with a disability, ageing populations, and those with non-communicable diseases. AT is essential for generating collaborative learning environments, inclusive of students with a range of specific needs and required supports. However, many teachers lack the training, resources, and skills to use AT in the class. This study uses a systems thinking approach to consider teachers AT needs in the Irish classroom. METHODS: Three hundred and five teachers completed an online survey, and 10 took

Barriers and facilitators to humanizing birth care in Tanzania: findings from semi-structured interviews with midwives and obstetricians.

BACKGROUND: In Tanzania, the provision of humanized care is increasingly being emphasized in midwifery practice, yet studies regarding perceptions and practices of skilled health personnel towards the humanization of birth care are scare. Previous reviews have identified that abuse and disrespect is not limited to individuals but reflects systematic failures and deeply embedded provider attitudes and beliefs. Therefore, the current study aims to explore the perceptions and practices of skilled health personnel on humanizing birth care in Tanzania by identifying current barriers and facilitator
