This review discusses the leading hypotheses concerning ventilatory control during submaximal exercise. The ventilatory response at the onset of submaximal exercise has been studied extensively. It is generally agreed that expired ventilation (VE) increases rapidly at the initiation of exercise followed by a slower increase in VE until a steady state is reached. In general, there are four schools of thought concerning the mechanisms that are responsible for the exercise hyperpnoea. Two of the hypotheses relate the increase in VE to neural regulation. One group argues that the increase in VE du

The cat's flocculus can be divided into 3 zones on the basis of differences in their efferent projection sites. In the present study, climbing fiber projections from the inferior olive to each zone of the flocculus were studied by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Following large injections of HRP into the flocculus, labeled cells appear in the dorsal cap and the ventrolateral outgrowth of the principal olive. No HRP-labeled somata are present in other parts of the inferior olive. Following microinjections of HRP into the rostral of caudal zones of the flocc

In acute experiments on cats in chloralose anesthesia the effects of efferent and afferent electrical stimulation of the cervical vagi on an applied constant flow of saline through the feline pylorus was studied. The motor activity of the stomach was recorded simultaneously with a volume recording technique. Efferent cervical vagal stimulation caused a decrease in the transpyloric flow and an increased gastric motor activity. In a few animals the decreased transsphincteric flow was preceded by a short period of increased flow. When the transpyloric flow was reduced by splanchnic nerve stimulat

Hypertension is a major risk factor for increased cardiovascular events with accelerated sympathetic nerve activity implicated in the pathogenesis and progression of disease. Blood pressure is not adequately controlled in many patients, despite the availability of effective pharmacotherapy. Novel procedure- as well as device-based strategies, such as percutaneous renal sympathetic nerve denervation, have been developed to improve blood pressure in these refractory patients. Renal sympathetic denervation not only reduces blood pressure but also renal as well as systemic sympathetic nerve activi

The afferent and efferent connections of the prelunate visual association area V4 of macaque monkeys were investigated by means of the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method. The specific thalamic afferents from the dorsolateral segment of the medial pulvinar and the lateral segment of the inferior pulvinar were topographically organized. A band of cells was labelled in the intralaminar nuclei (nucl. centr. med. and lat., reaching into LD and the most dorsal part of VL), and a few cells in the interlaminar layers of the lateral geniculate body. Other diencephalic afferents included the claustrum,

The in vitro lamprey spinal cord contains a "central pattern generator" (CPG) that can generate locomotor activity with excitatory amino acids added to the bath. The motor pattern can be entrained by imposed rhythmic bending of either the caudal or rostral end of the notochord/spinal cord. In the present study, the quantitative and mechanistic features of entrainment were investigated. Increasing the amplitude of the imposed movement increased the range of frequencies over which entrainment occurred. Brief, pulsed, imposed movements could reset the locomotor rhythm. During entrainment at diffe

Single unit potentials can be recorded directly with wire electrodes during an operation in man. Since averaging is not necessary this recording method is a fast neuromonitoring tool. Using 2 pairs of platinum electrodes it was possible to record extracellular single unit potentials at 2 sites in nerve root filaments in the spinal canal and to determine conduction velocities. Afferent and efferent single unit potentials could be distinguished from each other by a reversed conduction time and a reversed potential change making a differentiation between dorsal and ventral root parts possible. The inner ear receives two types of efferent feedback from the brainstem: one pathway provides gain control on outer hair cells' contribution to cochlear amplification, and the other modulates the excitability of the cochlear nerve. Although efferent feedback can protect hair cells from acoustic injury and thereby minimize noise-induced permanent threshold shifts, most prior studies focused on high-intensity exposures (>100 dB SPL). Here, we show that efferents are essential for long-term maintenance of cochlear function in mice aged 1 year post-de-efferentation without purposeful acoustic ove

The efferent pathway strengthens the auditory system for optimal performance by fine-tuning the response and protecting the inner ear from noise-induced damage. Although it has been well documented that efference helps defend against hair cell and synaptic extinction, the mechanisms of its otoprotective role have still not been established. Specifically, the effect of efference on an individual hair cell's recovery from mechanical overstimulation has not been demonstrated. In the current work, we explored the impact of efferent stimulation on this recovery using in vitro preparations of hair c

Stereotyped sequences of neural activity underlie learned vocal behavior in songbirds; principle neurons in the cortical motor nucleus HVC fire in stereotyped sequences with millisecond precision across multiple renditions of a song. The geometry of neural connections underlying these sequences is not known in detail though feed-forward chains are commonly assumed in theoretical models of sequential neural activity. In songbirds, a well-defined cortical-thalamic motor circuit exists but little is known the fine-grain structure of connections within each song nucleus. To examine whether the str

The intergeniculate leaflet of the lateral geniculate nucleus is considered to modulate circadian activity rhythms probably mediated by a direct neuronal connection to the suprachiasmatic nucleus. The present study in the gerbil demonstrates, by anterograde tracing with Phaseolus vulgaris-leucoaglutinin (PHA-L), the existence of an additional neuronal projection from a subportion of the lateral geniculate nucleus, involving the intergeniculate leaflet, directly to the pineal gland. PHA-L-immunoreactive nerve fibers originating from perikarya at the injection site were located under the optic t

The subfornical organ (SFO) has projections to specific sets of nuclei within the preoptic area and hypothalamus which enable it to influence behavioral and physiological controls of water balance. It projects to the nuclei of the anteroventral third ventricular area, to vasopressinergic (heavily) and oxytocinergic (moderately) magnocellular neurons of the supraoptic and paraventricular nucleus. It also projects to the parvocellular areas of the paraventricular nucleus which project to the median eminence and to all the motor nuclei of the autonomic nervous system. In addition the SFO projects

Motor and vocal tics are the core symptom of Tourette syndrome (TS). Tic generation seems to develop throughout the known motor pathways. This review focuses on functional neuroimaging in order to check this assumption. Also it elucidates the alterations and interactions of motor networks in TS depending on different contexts and circumstances like resting state, spontaneous tic movements, suppression of tics and premonitory urges, voluntary goal-oriented movements as well as electrophysiological neuronal stimulation. In general, the primary tic generating motor network uses the basic motor pa

Although the roles of the thalamocortical pathways in somatic movements are well documented, their roles in eye movements have only recently been examined. The oculomotor-related areas in the frontal cortex receive inputs from the basal ganglia and the cerebellum via the thalamus. Consistent with this, neurons in the paralaminar part of the ventrolateral (VL), ventroanterior (VA), and mediodorsal (MD) nuclei and those in the intralaminar nuclei exhibit a variety of eye movement-related responses. To date, the thalamocortical pathways are known to play at least 2 roles in eye movements. First,

Nine Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) learned to discriminate among 320 complex naturalistic scenes (Set A) for food reward. Six months later they learned to discriminate among a further 192 scenes (Set B). Immediately after learning Set B the animals were given a preoperative retention test of both sets, consisting of a single trial with every scene they had learned. Three monkeys were then operated upon to transect the fornix, the other six forming an unoperated control group. Two weeks after operation the scenes were presented once each in a postoperative retention test. The animals with for

Electromyographical recordings from neck muscles reinnervated by the vagus nerve allowed monitoring of vagal output to the reticulo-rumen in conscious sheep. The vagus nerve was sectioned below the nodose ganglion and its central end anastomosed with the peripheral end of the spinal accessory nerve, which innervates the trapezius and mastoido-humeral muscles. Fifty-three vagal efferent units recorded were identified and classified into seven distinguishable types on the basis of their temporal relationship with gastric movements. With respect to their patterns of discharge during the primary c

The distribution of cerebellar corticonuclear and corticovestibular fibers from the anterior lobe of the North American opossum, Didelphis virginiana, was studied using the Fink and Heimer ('67) technique. Corticonuclear fibers from medial areas of anterior lobe project into the medial cerebellar nucleus (NM) in a topographically organized manner. Fibers from lobules II and III enter rostral and rostrodorsal NM, while those from lobules IV and V terminate in progressively more caudal parts of the nucleus. Collectively the terminal fields in NM for axons from lobules II-V occupy about the rostr

The wall of the common carotid artery of the domestic fowl possesses a baroreceptor zone around the origin of the artery to the carotid body. The zone comprises about 20 small foci which have undergone a fibrous modification. Within these foci there are bare endings, which closely resemble ultrastructurally the baroreceptors of the mammalian carotid sinus in their mitochondrial content, relationship to collagen and elastic fibres, and abnormal organelles. These should be slowly adapting baroreceptors, similar functionally to the baroreceptors of the mammalian carotid sinus. Also present in the
