First report of pediatric ehrlichiosis in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Ehrlichia chaffeensis is responsible for most cases of human ehrlichiosis, an acute febrile tick-borne disease. This clinical entity is more commonly reported in adults from the United States. Therefore, it is of special interest to characterize this disease in children, given that very few cases in children have been reported outside of this country. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 15-year-old female from northeastern Mexico with a five-day history of myalgias, arthralgias, fever, abdominal pain, rash, and somnolence. The possibility of tick-borne disease was suspected con

Ehrlichiosis in a golf-oriented retirement community.

BACKGROUND: Ehrlichiosis due to Ehrlichia chaffeensis usually occurs sporadically or in small clusters, with an annual incidence estimated at 3 to 5 cases per 100,000 population in areas of endemic disease. The putative principal vector is the Lone Star tick (Amblyomma americanum). We investigated an outbreak of ehrlichiosis that occurred in June 1993 among members of a golf-oriented retirement community (community A) in Tennessee. The community is densely wooded and borders a wildlife-management area where deer are numerous. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study, using medical-history r

The global distribution and risk prediction of Anaplasmataceae species: a systematic review and geospatial modelling analysis.

BACKGROUND: The family Anaplasmataceae, reclassified under the order Rickettsiales, represents a highly complex group that poses an increasing global threat. However, their infection risk remains poorly understood. We aimed to map the diversity, distribution, and potential infection risk of Anaplasmataceae members. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, bioRvix, and MedRvix for published articles to extract data on the detection of Anaplasmatacea species in vectors, animals, and humans from 1910 to 2022. We mapped the richness and global distribution of identified Anaplasmatacea species

Human ehrlichioses in Brazil: first suspect cases.

Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) rickettsiosis is the most common and recognized of the human rickettsioses in Brazil. It is difficult to establish the diagnosis of human rickettsiosis infection by routine microbiologic methods, creating a false idea that Rickettsia and Ehrlichia infections are rare and without importance. New tick-borne diseases, like human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) and human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME), have been described in many countries. These diseases can present symptoms similar to rickettsioses of the spotted fever group, and they are transmitted by ixodid ticks.

Ehrlichia canis: Is It a Pathogen for Humans and Other Primates?

Ehrlichioses and anaplasmosis are among the most commonly reported tick-borne diseases in humans and some animal species. Ehrlichia canis is the causative agent of canine monocytic ehrlichiosis; it primarily affects dogs and is usually transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks. Some reports suggest that this bacterium is a zoonotic pathogen capable of causing clinical symptoms consistent with human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis. Non-human primates seem to be susceptible to E. canis-infection, although it is not clear whether the bacterium can cause disease in

[Ticks and associated bacterial zoonoses in Argentina].

This work presents a description of the knowledge on the association between ticks and potentially pathogenic bacterial microorganisms for humans in Argentina to date. The presence of a potentially pathogenic microorganism in a tick is a necessary but not sufficient condition for transmission, as the vector must possess both competence and vectorial capacity. In Argentina, 44 species of hard ticks (family Ixodidae) have been recorded, among which those belonging to the genera Amblyomma and Rhipicephalus are the most relevant species due to their potential capacity for pathogen transmission, pa

Ehrlichia Meningitis Mimicking Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: A Case Study for Medical Decision-Making Heuristics.

Thunderclap headache is a sudden and severe headache that can occur after an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Subarachnoid hemorrhage is a medical emergency that requires prompt attention and hospitalization. Patients with thunderclap headache often undergo a noncontrast head computed tomography (CT) scan to ascertain SAH bleeding and, if the scan is negative, then undergo a lumbar puncture to look for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) red blood cells (RBCs), which would be consistent with an aneurysmal leak. If the initial CT is negative and CSF is positive for RBCs, patients are usually adm

Modulation of host cell metabolism by T4SS-encoding intracellular pathogens.

Intracellular bacterial pathogens intimately interact with the infected host cell to prevent elimination and to ensure survival. One group of intracellular pathogens, including Coxiella burnetii, Legionella pneumophila, Brucella spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Ehrlichia chaffeensis, utilizes a type IV secretion system (T4SS) that injects effectors to modulate host cell signalling, vesicular trafficking, autophagy, cell death and transcription to ensure survival [1]. So far, little emphasis has been directed towards understanding how these bacteria manipulate host cell metabolism. This man

Human monocytic ehrlichiosis.

A 56-year-old man with a history of Wegener granulomatosis presented with 6 days of sinus congestion, fever, malaise, myalgias, episcleritis, and a morbilliform rash. An exacerbation of Wegener granulomatosis was the principal concern because of the frequency of flares in that disease. The patient developed acute renal failure, thrombocytopenia, transaminitis, and, finally, severe myocarditis that led to congestive heart failure. Additional history-taking and the evolution of his clinical features led to empirical treatment with doxycycline for human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME). The diagnosis

Metagenomic sequencing provides insight into pathogenic and related benign microbes in ticks collected from pastured cattle.

Biting arthropods (e.g., ticks and mosquitoes) feed on pastured cattle and may serve as sentinels for certain pathogens present in the environment, including those with the capacity to spillover from wildlife into managed herds and humans. Metagenomic next generation sequencing (mNGS)-enabled by applications such as Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT)-allows samples to be screened for a diverse array of known and unknown pathogens compared to traditional targeted methods reliant on polymerase chain reaction (PCR). This study examined the utility of mNGS to identify potential pathogens relevant

Surveillance of Ticks and Tick-Borne Pathogens in Suburban Natural Habitats of Central Maryland.

Lyme and other tick-borne diseases are increasing in the eastern United States and there is a lack of research on integrated strategies to control tick vectors. Here we present results of a study on tick-borne pathogens detected from tick vectors and rodent reservoirs from an ongoing 5-yr tick suppression study in the Lyme disease-endemic state of Maryland, where human-biting tick species, including Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae) (the primary vector of Lyme disease spirochetes), are abundant. During the 2017 tick season, we collected 207 questing ticks and 602 ticks recovered from 327

Molecular and Serological Prevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, A. platys, Ehrlichia canis, E. chaffeenses, E. ewingii, Borrelia burgdorferi, Babesia canis, B. gibsoni and B. vogeli among Clinically Healthy Outdoor Dogs in Serbia.

Data concerning combined molecular and serological prevalence of emerging canine tick-borne pathogens in Serbia are lacking. A large population of outdoor living dogs in Belgrade, Serbia's' capital, present an excellent population for epidemiology study. Blood samples were collected from 111 dogs, including 46 shelter, 31 free roaming, and 34 hunting dogs. Species-specific real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (IDEXX Laboratories, Inc., Westbrook Maine, USA) was applied for the molecular detection of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, A. platys, Ehrlichia canis, Babesia canis, B. gibsoni and B. vo

Seroprevalence of tick-borne infections in military working dogs in the Republic of Korea.

In this study we endeavored to determine the seroprevalence of tick-borne infections in the military working dog (MWD) population in the Republic of Korea (ROK). Our sample population consisted of 182 serum samples from MWDs for 3 different years (1996, 2002, and 2007). In addition, 63 whole blood samples from 2007 were available for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Serum samples were evaluated by a commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and immunofluorescence assay (IFA) for Ehrlichia canis and Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and by ELISA only for Borrelia burgdorferi. Pathogens in Ixodes persulcatus and Ixodes ricinus ticks (Acari, Ixodidae) in Karelia (Russia).

Ixodid ticks (Acarina, Ixodidae) are vectors of dangerous human infections. The main tick species that determine the epidemiological situation for tick-borne diseases in northern Europe are Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus. In recent years, significant changes in the number and distribution of these species have been observed, accompanied by an expansion of the sympatric range. This work summarizes the data of long-term studies carried out in Karelia since 2007 on the infection of I. persulcatus and I. ricinus ticks with various pathogens, including new viruses with unclear pathogenic pot

Ticks and tick-borne pathogens and putative symbionts of black bears (Ursus americanus floridanus) from Georgia and Florida.

Ticks were collected from 38 black bears (Ursus americanus floridanus) from northwestern Florida (n = 18) from 2003 to 2005 and southern Georgia (n = 20) in 2006. Five species (Amblyomma americanum, A. maculatum, Dermacentor variabilis, Ixodes scapularis, and I. affinis) were collected from Florida bears, and 4 species (A. americanum, A. maculatum, D. variabilis, I. scapularis) were collected from bears in Georgia. Ixodes scapularis was the most frequently collected tick, followed by D. variabilis, A. americanum, A. maculatum, and I. affinis. The collection of I. affinis from a Florida bear re

Detection of Borrelia miyamotoi and other tick-borne pathogens in human clinical specimens and Ixodes scapularis ticks in New York State, 2012-2015.

Borrelia miyamotoi (Bm) is a recently emerging bacterial agent transmitted by several species of ixodid ticks. Diagnosis of Bm infection can be challenging, as the organism is not easily cultivable. We have developed and validated a multiplex real-time PCR to simultaneously identify Bm infection and the agents causing human granulocytic anaplasmosis and human monocytic ehrlichiosis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Ehrlichia chaffeensis, respectively. The assay is 100% specific; highly sensitive, detecting 11 gene copies of Bm DNA in both whole blood and cerebral spinal fluid; and provides rapid

Out of Season and Out of Pattern: Winter Ehrlichiosis in a Heart Transplant Recipient With Possible Reactivation or Reinfection.

Human monocytic ehrlichiosis (HME) is a tick-borne infection caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis, an obligate intracellular bacterium that infects monocytes and can lead to systemic inflammatory illness. Clinical manifestations typically include fever, malaise, cytopenias, transaminitis, and, in severe cases, neurologic or multiorgan involvement. Although HME is increasingly recognized in immunocompromised hosts, it remains uncommon in solid organ transplant recipients and is rarely reported outside peak seasonal exposure periods. In transplant patients, atypical presentations, baseline hematologi

Use of Extracorporeal Support in Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis Secondary to Ehrlichiosis.

Ehrlichiosis, caused by transmission of Ehrlichia chaffeensis to humans through the bite of an infected lone star tick, can lead to secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a life-threatening condition caused by uncontrolled activation of the cellular immune system. We describe a child with HLH secondary to ehrlichiosis who developed multiorgan failure and was successfully managed with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). A 9-year-old boy developed headaches, fever, and sore throat after suspected tick exposure. He presented with pancytopenia, elevated ferritin, and soluble i
