Hyoid apparatus and pharynx in the lion (Panthera leo), jaguar (Panthera onca), tiger (Panthera tigris), cheetah (Acinonyxjubatus) and domestic cat (Felis silvestris f. catus).

Structures of the hyoid apparatus, the pharynx and their topographical positions in the lion, tiger, jaguar, cheetah and domestic cat were described in order to determine morphological differences between species or subfamilies of the Felidae. In the lion, tiger and jaguar (species of the subfamily Pantherinae) the Epihyoideum is an elastic ligament lying between the lateral pharyngeal muscles and the Musculus (M.) thyroglossus rather than a bony element like in the cheetah or the domestic cat. The M. thyroglossus was only present in the species of the Pantherinae studied. In the lion and the

Evaluation of a subject-specific finite-element model of the equine metacarpophalangeal joint under physiological load.

The equine metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint is frequently injured, especially by racehorses in training. Most injuries result from repetitive loading of the subchondral bone and articular cartilage rather than from acute events. The likelihood of injury is multi-factorial but the magnitude of mechanical loading and the number of loading cycles are believed to play an important role. Therefore, an important step in understanding injury is to determine the distribution of load across the articular surface during normal locomotion. A subject-specific finite-element model of the MCP joint was devel

Indentation mapping revealed poroelastic, but not viscoelastic, properties spanning native zonal articular cartilage.

UNLABELLED: Osteoarthrosis is a debilitating disease affecting millions, yet engineering materials for cartilage regeneration has proven difficult because of the complex microstructure of this tissue. Articular cartilage, like many biological tissues, produces a time-dependent response to mechanical load that is critical to cell's physiological function in part due to solid and fluid phase interactions and property variations across multiple length scales. Recreating the time-dependent strain and fluid flow may be critical for successfully engineering replacement tissues but thus far has large

Nonsurgical correction of cleft lip nasal deformity in the early neonate.

Auricular cartilage is soft and plastic, and congenital auricular deformities are easily corrected nonsurgically in the early neonatal period. Alar cartilage is the same kind of elastic cartilage as auricular cartilage. Therefore, alar cartilage is also malleable in the early neonate. When cleft lip repair is performed around the age of three months, it is difficult to obtain good nasal shape without surgical correction. In the early neonate, there is a fair possibility for success in the nonsurgical correction of cleft lip nasal deformity. We performed cleft lip repair accompanied with nonsur

Morphology of laryngeal cartilage of the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) Linnaeus, 1758.

Armadillos, Xenarthras representatives, known for adaptability to different ecosystems, own specific morphophysiological characteristics that are not known and deserve to be studied. The aim of this study was to describe the morphology of cartilage of the larynx of the nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus). Five dead armadillos were donated by the Chico Mendes Institute of Biodiversity (ICMBio-PI) to the Federal University of Piauí. The animals were fixed and dissected for removal of the larynx. The cartilages were identified and described, photodocumented, and schematized. Fragments wi

Indentation stiffness of young canine knee articular cartilage--influence of strenuous joint loading.

The indentation stiffness of knee articular cartilage subjected to strenuous physical training (SPT: treadmill running 20 km day-1 for 15 weeks, n = 6) of young Beagles was tested and compared to that obtained from age-matched (55 weeks, n = 9) controls. The mathematical solution for the shear modulus, as determined from indentation of an elastic layer bonded to a rigid half space, was extended to small Poisson's ratios and applied to the analysis of cartilage response after a step stress (0.39 MPa) application. In these measurements with an impervious, plane-ended indenter, the equilibrium de

Induction of heterotopic and orthotopic cartilage and bone formation in mice.

Heterotopic cartilage, bone and bone-marrow formation was achieved in mice by transplantation of a variety of xenogeneic established cell lines, by the transitional epithelium or by implants of demineralized bone matrix. The pattern and the sequence of events were always the same, regardless of the inducer used; viz., hyaline cartilage appeared 6-7 days after implantation, and endochondral bone formation followed. However, in cases of allogeneic implants of transitional epithelium into species other than the mouse, an intramembranous osteogenesis was the main mode of bone formation. When the y

The size, number, and distribution of nerve endings around and within the human epiglottis, focusing on tracheal intubation maneuvers.

The aim of this study was to examine the distribution of nerve endings in the mucosa, submucosa, and cartilage of the epiglottis and the vallecula area and to quantify them. The findings could inform the choice of laryngoscope blades for intubation procedures. Fourteen neck slices from seven unembalmed, cryopreserved human cadavers were analyzed. The slices were stained, and cross and longitudinal sections were obtained from each. The nerve endings and cartilage were identified. The primary metrics recorded were the number, area, and circumference of nerve endings located in the mucosa and sub

A finite deformation theory for cartilage and other soft hydrated connective tissues--I. Equilibrium results.

The determination of valid stress-strain relations for articular cartilage under finite deformation conditions is a prerequisite for constructing models for synovial joint lubrication. Under physiological conditions of high strain rates and/or high stresses in the joint, large strains occur in cartilage. A finite deformation theory valid for describing cartilage, as well as other soft hydrated connective tissues under large loads, has been developed. This theory is based on the choice of a specific Helmholtz energy function which satisfies the generalized Coleman-Noll (GCN0) condition and the

Tracheal Reconstruction with the Scaffolded Cartilage Sheets in an Orthotopic Animal Model.

Tracheal reconstruction remains challenged in clinical. We aimed to fabricate scaffolded cartilage sheets with rigid and elastic supports for tracheal reconstruction. The chondrocyte cell infiltration activity was examined in poly-caprolactone sheet scaffolds with various thicknesses and pore sizes after seeding cells on the top surface of the sheet scaffolds. The expression of cartilage-related genes and accumulation of sulfated glycosaminoglycans were elevated in the cell-scaffold composites upon chondrogenic induction. The thicker cartilage sheets represented stronger mechanical properties

Perspectives on intrinsic articular cartilage interfaces.

INTRODUCTION: According to the current concept the joint is an organ composed of multiple tissues forming manifold communicating interfaces. Moreover, cartilage itself presents typical intrinsic zonal interfaces. Since the healthy joint cartilage is not vascularized, soluble mediators are distributed by the synovia fluid flow in the cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) of the joint compartments. This distribution is dependent on intermittent mechanical loading and water flow in the joint. Hence, soluble factors play a pivotal role in articular cartilage interfacial communication. These mediato

Repurposing of a gill gene regulatory program for outer-ear evolution.

How new structures emerge during evolution has long fascinated biologists. An example is how the diminutive bones of the mammalian middle ear arose from ancestral fish jawbones1. By contrast, the evolutionary origin of the outer ear, another mammalian innovation, remains a mystery, partly because it is supported by non-mineralized elastic cartilage, which is rarely recovered in fossils. Whether the outer ear arose de novo or through the reuse of ancestral developmental programs has remained unknown. Here we show that the outer ear shares gene regulatory programs with the gills of fishes and am

[Gastric bronchogenic cysts. An unusual location].

Bronchogenic cysts are rare benign lesions that arise during embryogenesis of the primitive proximal intestine and are located primarily in the lung. They are lined with cuboid or columnar pseudostratified and ciliated epithelium and have elastic fibers, smooth muscle, bronchial glands and cartilage in their walls. Gastric bronchogenic cysts are extremely rare with very few reported cases. Symptoms are usually caused by compression. GIST is the main differential diagnosis and the treatment is surgical resection.

Type II collagen-induced auricular chondritis.

Sensitization to type II collagen induced inflammatory destruction of elastic ear cartilage, as well as arthritis, in Sprague-Dawley rats. This auricular lesion morphologically resembled relapsing polychondritis in humans. Moreover, in the experimental model, as has been reported in human disease, extraarticular chondritis occurred in the context of immunologic sensitivity to native type II collagen. These similarities suggest that type II collagen-induced auricular chondritis may provide insights about the pathogenesis of relapsing polychondritis.

In Vivo Cellular Infiltration and Remodeling in a Decellularized Ovine Osteochondral Allograft.

Interest in decellularized tissues has steadily gained as potential solutions for degenerative diseases and traumatic events, replacing sites of missing tissue, and providing the relevant biochemistry and microstructure for tissue ingrowth and regeneration. Osteoarthritis, a progressive and debilitating disease, is often initiated with the formation of a focal defect in the otherwise smooth surface of articular cartilage. Decellularized cartilage tissue, which maintains the structural complexity of the native extracellular matrix, has the potential to provide a clinically relevant solution to

Novel insights into the elastic and muscular components of the human trachea.

Despite its probable importance in health and disease, the elastic tissue in the trachea has rarely been investigated. In addition, various aspects of the trachealis muscle are controversial. The aim of this study was to clarify this clinically relevant anatomy. Ten cadaveric tracheobronchial specimens (age range 68-101 years; seven males; no major airway pathology) were qualitatively investigated by microdissection. Serial histologic sections from multiple sites in three specimens were analyzed after staining for elastin. Findings were correlated with observations from video tracheobronchosco

Alginate-waterborne polyurethane 3D bioprinted scaffolds for articular cartilage tissue engineering.

Articular cartilage defects comprise a spectrum of diseases associated with degeneration or damage of the connective tissue present in particular joints, presenting progressive osteoarthritis if left untreated. In vitro tissue regeneration is an innovative treatment for articular cartilage injuries that is attracting not only clinical attention, but also great interest in the development of novel biomaterials, since this procedure involves the formation of a neotissue with the help of material support. In this work, functional alginate and waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) scaffolds have been dev

African Spiny Mice (Acomys) Exhibit Mild Osteoarthritis Following Meniscal Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Hyaline cartilage has limited innate healing abilities and hyaline cartilage loss is a hallmark of osteoarthritis (OA). Animal models can provide important insights into cartilage regeneration potential. One such animal model, the African spiny mouse (Acomys), is capable of regenerating skin, skeletal muscle, and elastic cartilage. This study aims to evaluate whether these regenerative abilities protect Acomys with meniscal injury from OA-related joint damage and behaviors indicative of joint pain and dysfunction. DESIGN: Acomys received destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM)

Mild degenerative changes of hip cartilage in elderly patients: an available sample representative of early osteoarthritis.

This study investigated the cellular and molecular changes which occur in cartilage from adults with femoral neck fracture (FNF) and osteoarthritis (OA), and explored the similarities in hip cartilage obtained from elderly patients and patients with early OA. Femoral heads were retrieved from 23 female patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). This group included 7 healthy patients with FNF (hFNF), 8 elderly adults with FNF (eFNF), and 8 elderly patients with hip OA (OA). After high-field MRI T2 mapping, osteochondral plugs were harvested from the weight-bearing area of femoral heads f

Development of a Rotational Culture Method for Reconstruction of Mesodermal Tissue: A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Cartilage regenerative medicine presents promising therapeutic options; however, mature cartilage tissue reconstruction remains challenging. Although techniques for expanding chondrocytes are clinically available, the production of mature articular and auricular cartilage tissues remains to be achieved. Similarly, although epidermal sheets from cell cultures have been clinically used for skin regeneration, dermal tissue reconstruction remains elusive. This study aimed to develop a rotational culture method to produce cartilage and dermal tissue without scaffold materials. METHODS:
