Volumetric imaging of Young's modulus and nonlinear elasticity on the micro-scale.

Compression optical coherence elastography (OCE) provides micro-scale imaging of tissue and biomaterial mechanical properties in three dimensions (3-D), showing promise in a range of biomedical applications. Despite substantial progress, most 3-D OCE techniques do not account for the nonlinear elastic response of tissue, resulting in deformation-dependent variations in estimated Young's modulus within an image that reduce reliability and confound comparison both within and between samples. In this work, we overcome these limitations by explicitly accounting for sample deformation and present t

Elastic fibres in health and disease.

Elastic fibres are a major class of extracellular matrix fibres that are abundant in dynamic connective tissues such as arteries, lungs, skin and ligaments. Their structural role is to endow tissues with elastic recoil and resilience. They also act as an important adhesion template for cells, and they regulate growth factor availability. Mutations in major structural components of elastic fibres, especially elastin, fibrillins and fibulin-5, cause severe, often life-threatening, heritable connective tissue diseases such as Marfan syndrome, supravalvular aortic stenosis and cutis laxa. Elastic-

Assembly of collagen fibers into contiguous dense and loose regions of subcutaneous fascia.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the collagen fiber structure of the subcutaneous fascia, a connective tissue layer between the skin and epimysium. METHODS: Fascia samples with varying extensibility were examined using biochemical and microscopic methods. RESULTS: Loose fascia, the more extensible type, displayed sparsely distributed collagen fibers, while dense fascia showed tightly packed collagen fiber bundles. Elastase treatment, after urea pretreatment, caused the loosening of collagen fiber bundles and increased collagen fiber generation as the treatment time increased. This

Shear wave elastography for intracranial epidermoid tumors.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound elastography (USE) is a novel technique that assesses the mechanical properties of body tissues in real time. Based on elasticity measurements, USE enables the differentiation of tumor tissue from surrounding normal tissue. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate an intraoperative SWE technique for differentiating tumor tissue (epidermoid cyst) from the surrounding normal brain tissue based on elastic properties. METHODS: We prospectively report the intraoperative elasticity assessments of four patients diagnosed with epidermoid cysts. Along with standard ultrasonography, int

Elastic fibers in orthopedics: Form and function in tendons and ligaments, clinical implications, and future directions.

Elastic fibers are an essential component of the extracellular matrix of connective tissues. The focus of both clinical management and scientific investigation of elastic fiber disorders has centered on the cardiovascular manifestations due to their significant impact on morbidity and mortality. As such, the current understanding of the orthopedic conditions experienced by these patients is limited. The musculoskeletal implications of more subtle elastic fiber abnormalities, whether due to allelic variants or age-related tissue degeneration, are also not well understood. Recent advances have b

Elasticity of the Cervix in Relation to Uterus Position.

Strain elastography allows the evaluation of tissue elasticity. Background/Objectives: Tissue elasticity depends on the content and distribution of collagen fibers and is shaped by the applied tensile forces that may differ in uteri with a different angle of flexion of the corpus on the cervix. The objective was to investigate whether the angle of uterine flexion is related to cervical tissue elasticity. Methods: The anterior angle between the longitudinal axis of the uterus corpus and that of the cervix was measured in 275 non-pregnant young women by transvaginal ultrasonography and considere

Lack of vessel wall elastolysis in human invasive pulmonary aspergillosis.

In experimental studies, the apparent ability of Aspergillus fumigatus isolates to produce elastase in agar plates correlates with their ability to cause invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in mice pretreated with cortisone. Thus, elastase production may govern the pathogenicity of particular isolates. If this is so, then disruption of the elastic layers within blood vessel walls in invasive aspergillosis would be expected. To test this hypothesis, tissue blocks were prepared from nine patients with invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. Separate but immediately adjacent histological sections were sta

Extracellular matrix in ascending aortic aneurysms and dissections - What we learn from decellularization and scanning electron microscopy.

Pathological impairment of elastic fiber and other extracellular matrix (ECM) components are described for the aortic media of ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms (aTAA) but the exact pathological impairment of the structure and its degree still needs further investigations. To evaluate the quantity and quality of elastic fiber sheets and other ECM structures (e.g. collagen), cells were removed from different types of aneurysmal tissues (tricuspid aortic valve [TAV] associated-, bicuspid aortic valve [BAV] associated-aneurysmal tissue and acute aortic dissections [AAD]) using 2.5% sodium hydro

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum-like papillary dermal elastolysis: immunohistochemical study using elastic fiber cross-reactivity with an antibody against amyloid P component.

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE)-like papillary dermal elastolysis is a rare disorder clinically characterized by multiple, asymptomatic nonfollicular papules, yellow or flesh colored, grouped to form plaques with cobblestone appearance. These plaques are arranged symmetrically on the neck and supraclavicular areas of adult or elderly women, closely resembling the lesions of PXE. Histopathologically, the lesions are characterized by a band-like area of elastolysis along the papillary dermis. We report 2 cases of PXE-like papillary dermal elastolysis, in which the anomalies of the elastic tissue

A study of the solar effect on actinic keratoses by quantification of elastic fibres using an image analysis system.

It is widely accepted that elastotic changes of the skin are primarily an indicator of cumulative sun exposure of the dermis and are a characteristic finding of actinic keratoses. To date, there have been few reports that measure the amount of elastic tissue objectively and quantitatively, especially in actinic keratoses. The computerized image analysis method has proved useful recently in determining the area of elastic fibres. Using this method, we objectively quantified the elastotic tissue in actinic keratoses and evaluated the relationship between the degree of dermal elastosis, epidermal

Development of a Novel Soft Tissue Measurement Device for Individualized Finite Element Modeling in Custom-Fit CPAP Mask Evaluation.

PURPOSE: Individual facial soft tissue properties are necessary for creating individualized finite element (FE) models to evaluate medical devices such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) masks. There are no standard tools available to measure facial soft tissue elastic moduli, and techniques in literature require advanced equipment or custom parts to replicate. METHODS: We propose a simple and inexpensive soft tissue measurement (STM) indenter device to estimate facial soft tissue elasticity at five sites: chin, cheek near lip, below cheekbone, cheekbone, and cheek. The STM device

[The theory of microcirculation. 3: Role of blood pressure amplitude on tissue microcirculation].

The blood pressure amplitude of the pulsatile blood supply evokes elastic interactions in the tissue, in which the noncompressible tissue fluid functions as mediator of strength. The particular morphological structure round the tissue capillary gives rise to the suggestion that in the result of these interactions a tissue pump is working which supports the blood flow as well as the exchange of substances at the capillary wall. The effectiveness of this pump depends upon the blood pressure amplitude, the heart rate and upon the elastic tissue properties and can be regulated with changes of thes

Annular atrophic lichen planus and Sneddon's syndrome.

We report the case of a patient who had 2 rare diseases, annular atrophic lichen planus (AALP) and Sneddon's syndrome (SNS). This patient had also digital nodules with histological abnormalities suggestive of SNS vasculopathy, which have not been reported so far. AALP is the most rare of all varieties of lichen planus since this case is the third reported to date. The association of livedo racemosa and cerebrovascular disease is the hallmark of SNS, the incidence of which is estimated to be 4 cases per year per million inhabitants. In both diseases, an abnormal production of elastic-tissue-deg

MR elastography of the breast:preliminary clinical results.

PURPOSE: Imaging of breast tumors and various breast tissues using magnetic resonance (MR) elastography (MRE) to explore the potential of elasticity as a new parameter for the diagnosis of breast lesions. METHODS: Low-frequency mechanical waves are transmitted into breast tissue by means of an oscillator. The local characteristics of the mechanical wave are determined by the underlying elastic properties of the tissue. Theses waves can be displayed by means of a motion-sensitive spin-echo MR sequence within the phase of the MR image. Elasticity reconstruction is performed on the basis of 8 "s

Tailoring the physicochemical and shape memory properties of the biodegradable polymer poly(glycerol dodecanoate) via curing conditions.

A major challenge in the repair and regeneration of soft tissue damage occurring as a result of aging, injury, or disease is recapitulating the biomechanical properties of the native tissue. Ideally, a candidate biomaterial for soft tissue engineering applications should be biocompatible, nonlinearly elastic to match soft tissue mechanical behavior, biodegradable to enable tissue remodeling, and tailorable to achieve a range of nonlinear elastic mechanical properties to match specific soft tissues. In addition, for cardiac and other applications, the biomaterial should have shape memory charac

Histological observations of age-related changes in the epiglottis associated with decreased deglutition function in older adults.

Although the epiglottis plays a vital role in deglutition, histological studies of the epiglottis and surrounding ligaments associated with swallowing dysfunction are limited. Therefore, we performed histological observations to clarify age-related changes in the morphological characteristics of the epiglottis and surrounding structures. Tissue samples comprising the epiglottis and surrounding structures were collected from corpses that were both orally fed and tube-fed during their lifetimes. Following hematoxylin and eosin, Elastica Van Gieson, and immunohistochemical staining procedures, th

Frequency of cutis laxa-like clinical features and elastolysis in scleromyxedema: a retrospective clinicopathologic study of 19 patients with scleromyxedema.

BACKGROUND: Cutis laxa-like features were observed in a subset of patients with scleromyxedema. Given this observation, clinical and histopathologic features of scleromyxedema were reviewed in correlation with elastic tissue staining. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed clinical records and histopathologic features from patients with scleromyxedema seen at our institution from 1992 through 2013. We also evaluated available skin biopsies with an elastin stain and assessed whether dermal elastin fibers were diminished in density or were fragmented (or both). RESULTS: Nineteen patients with sc

Intraoperative identification of patient-specific elastic modulus of the meniscus during arthroscopy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Degenerative meniscus tissue has been associated with a lower elastic modulus and can lead to the development of arthrosis. Safe intraoperative measurement of in vivo elastic modulus of the human meniscus could contribute to a better understanding of meniscus health, and for developing surgical simulators where novice surgeons can learn to distinguish healthy from degenerative meniscus tissue. Such measurement can also support intraoperative decision-making by providing a quantitative measure of the meniscus health condition. The objective of this study is to demonstr
