Evaluation of the influence of growth medium composition on cell elasticity.

Recently, there has been an increasing interest in using the biomechanical properties of cells as biomarkers to discriminate between normal and cancerous cells. However, few investigators have considered the influence of the growth medium composition when evaluating the biomechanical properties of the normal and diseased cells. In this study, we investigated the variation in Young's modulus of non-malignant MCF10A and malignant MDA-MB-231 breast cells seeded in five different growth media under controlled experimental conditions. The average Young's modulus of MDA-MB-231 cells was significantl

Zonular fibers, multimolecular composition as related to function (elasticity) and pathology.

Zonular fibers (ZF) play an important role in accommodation. With the rapid increase over the last decade of the oldest part of the population in industrialized countries, age-dependent loss of accommodation became an increasingly important problem. It appeared therefore interesting to review old and recent literature on ZF, their composition, structure and pathological alterations. By comparing former and recent reports it appeared to us, that several previous reports were not sufficiently taken in consideration for the understanding of the rheological properties of ZF. Elastin and proteoglyc

How might corneal elasticity help us understand diabetes and intraocular pressure?

PURPOSE: To determine how changes in corneal elasticity/stiffness might influence intraocular pressure (IOP) readings in diabetic patients. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed to understand the conflicting relationship between diabetes, elevated IOP, and glaucoma progression. RESULTS: Diabetic patients have been found to have statistically significant higher IOP readings in some population-based studies compared to non-diabetics. Insulin resistance states, hyperglycemia and glycosylated hemoglobin have been correlated with higher IOP (1 mmHg) measurements in diabetic

Joint hypermobility and skin elasticity: the hereditary disorders of connective tissue.

The hereditary disorders of connective tissues (HDCTs) encompass a spectrum of conditions linked pathophysiologically by abnormalities of collagen, fibrillin, and matrix proteins. The clinical picture ranges from morbidity because of musculoskeletal, skin, ocular and visceral pathologies to mortality from acute vascular collapse. For many of the conditions, there is a considerable overlap in clinical features, although severity varies; appreciating the subtle differences in presentation is vital to the clinician in determining the diagnosis. Though conditions associated with severe vascular pa

Noncontact Elastic Wave Imaging Optical Coherence Elastography for Evaluating Changes in Corneal Elasticity Due to Crosslinking.

The mechanical properties of tissues can provide valuable information about tissue integrity and health and can assist in detecting and monitoring the progression of diseases such as keratoconus. Optical coherence elastography (OCE) is a rapidly emerging technique, which can assess localized mechanical contrast in tissues with micrometer spatial resolution. In this work we present a noncontact method of optical coherence elastography to evaluate the changes in the mechanical properties of the cornea after UV-induced collagen cross-linking. A focused air-pulse induced a low amplitude (μm scale)

The series elastic shock absorber: tendon elasticity modulates energy dissipation by muscle during burst deceleration.

During downhill running, manoeuvring, negotiation of obstacles and landings from a jump, mechanical energy is dissipated via active lengthening of limb muscles. Tendon compliance provides a 'shock-absorber' mechanism that rapidly absorbs mechanical energy and releases it more slowly as the recoil of the tendon does work to stretch muscle fascicles. By lowering the rate of muscular energy dissipation, tendon compliance likely reduces the risk of muscle injury that can result from rapid and forceful muscle lengthening. Here, we examine how muscle-tendon mechanics are modulated in response to cha

The elastic tissue of Bruch's membrane. Connections to choroidal elastic tissue and the ciliary epithelium of the rabbit and human eyes.

Ultrastructural observations on the elastic lamina of Bruch's membrane of the rabbit and human eyes revealed connections to the ciliary epithelium and choroidal elastic tissue. The connections to the ciliary epithelium are in the form of bundles of microfibrils that peel off the anterior extension of Bruch's membrane beyond the ora serrata and insert into the basement membrane of the pigmented epithelium of the pars plana. The connections to the choroidal elastic tissue are in the form of bundles of microfibrils (in the rabbit) or elastin and microfibrils (in the human) that cross the tissue s

Effects of elastic taping, non-elastic taping and static stretching on recovery after intensive eccentric exercise.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of elastic tape (Kinesio tape) to placebo tape or static stretching on delayed onset muscle soreness. Fifty-one untrained female healthy volunteers were randomly assigned into three groups (n = 17/group), elastic tape, placebo tape and stretching group. Muscle soreness was induced by 4 sets of 25 maximal isokinetic (60°.s-1) eccentric contractions of dominant quadriceps on an isokinetic dynamometer. Compared with placebo tape, the elastic tape participants had less muscle soreness at 72 h post-exercise (p = 0.01). The elastic tape also increa

Mechanistic mapping of temperature-dependent ssDNA elasticity with oxDNA2 coarse-grained model.

The mechanical behavior of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) controls its biological function and underpins the design of DNA-based nanodevices, yet the microscopic origin of temperature-dependent elasticity remains incompletely quantified. Here, we use the salt-aware, sequence-dependent oxDNA2 coarse-grained model to map how intra-strand stacking and temperature jointly determine ssDNA mechanics for two prototypical homopolymers, poly(dA)50 and poly(dT)50, across 27-100 °C at 1.0 M monovalent salt. Large ensembles of independent simulations were used to extract equilibrium observables such as persi

Fullerene-derived hierarchical sp2 carbon exhibiting united hardness, elasticity, and thermal stability.

Carbon materials possess attractive mechanical and thermal properties, yet creating bulk sp²-bonded carbon that unites high hardness, elastic recoverability, and thermal stability has remained elusive. Mechanical anisotropy, low damage tolerance, and structural instability under stress or at high temperatures hinder the development of dense sp²-carbon architectures for demanding environments. Here we report a dual-phase sp2 carbon produced from C60 at high pressure through progressive structural reconstruction, yielding a hierarchical structure in which stacked graphene nanoclusters are integr

Multitask Learning Framework for Elasticity and Viscosity Image Reconstruction in Ultrasound Viscoelastography.

Soft tissues are viscoelastic in nature, and shear wave viscoelastography has emerged as an effective tool for differentiating healthy and diseased tissues by assessing their viscoelastic properties. This study presents a noise-aware multitask deep learning framework that simultaneously reconstructs tissue elasticity and viscosity maps. The proposed unified model directly estimates viscoelastic parameters from noisy shearwave data, eliminating the need for explicit shear wave attenuation measurements and improving robustness to noise. The framework was trained on 1000 velocity field datasets g

2D Ultrasound Elasticity Imaging of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms Using Deep Neural Networks.

Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) pose a significant clinical risk due to their potential for rupture, which is often asymptomatic but can be fatal. Although maximum diameter is commonly used for risk assessment, diameter alone is insufficient as it does not capture the properties of the underlying material of the vessel wall, which play a critical role in determining the risk of rupture. To overcome this limitation, we propose a deep learning-based framework for elasticity imaging of AAAs with 2D ultrasound. Leveraging finite element simulations, we generate a diverse dataset of displacement f

Shear elasticity analysis of supraball by resonant scattering using longitudinal ultrasonic pulses.

When a longitudinal ultrasound pulse impinges on a particle suspension with the particle diameter on the order of the wavelength, resonant scattering of the ultrasound occurs, resulting in an inherent frequency dependence of ultrasound attenuation. Since ultrasound is an elastic wave that transmits deformation of material, the attenuation coefficient and phase velocity are strongly correlated with the mechanical properties of the particles. It is known that a peak is observed in the frequency spectrum of the attenuation coefficient, from which the elastic modulus and viscous loss of the partic

Mechanically Robust 2D Magnetic Semiconductor: Anisotropic Elasticity and Fatigue Resistance in CrSBr.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with intrinsic anisotropy offer unique opportunities for direction-dependent functionality, yet their mechanical anisotropy and long-term reliability remain largely unexplored. Here, we systematically investigate the layered magnetic semiconductor CrSBr, revealing strong in-plane elastic anisotropy (Ea/Eb = 1.43) from angle-resolved atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanoindentation and an out-of-plane modulus of ∼54 GPa from contact resonance AFM, indicative of robust interlayer coupling. Dynamic AFM loading demonstrates pronounced anisotropic fatigue, with superior

Effect of fine needle aspiration biopsy on change in thyroid nodule elasticity.

AIMS: This study aimed to investigate changes in the stiffness of thyroid nodules following fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB), using shear wave elastography (SWE), a non-invasive imaging technique utilized in thyroid nodule evaluation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 82 patients scheduled to undergo FNAB for the first time were included. Ultrasound and SWE examinations were performed before the procedure and again 8 to 10 weeks after FNAB. Nodule stiffness was measured in kilopascals (kPa) during both evaluations, and changes in elasticity were assessed. RESULTS: The mean SWE stiffness o

Animal model for in-vivo Nuclear Cataract. Lens hardness and elasticity assessment.

Age-related cataract is the most frequent cause of blindness in the world being responsible for 48% of blindness and affecting more than 10% of the working population. Currently there is no objective data of the lens biomechanical properties so the process by which the cataract affects the lens's properties (e.g. hardness and elasticity) is still unclear. A modified animal model was produced to create different severities of nuclear cataract. Different doses of sodium selenite were injected in two different moments of the rat' eyes maturation resulting in 12, 13 and 11 rats with incipient, mod

A super soft thermoplastic biodegradable elastomer with high elasticity for arterial regeneration.

Elastomers with innovative performance will provide new opportunities for solving problems in soft tissue repair, such as arterial regeneration. Herein, we present a thermoplastic biodegradable elastomer (PPS) that differs from the rigid, low-elastic traditional ones. It shows super softness (0.41 ± 0.052 MPa), high stretchability (3239 ± 357 %), and viscoelasticity similar to natural soft tissues. In addition, it also has good processability and appropriate degradability, estimated at 4-8 months for complete degradation in vivo. This excellent overall performance makes it a great support mate

Does static stretching change uniformly the quadriceps elasticity in physically actives subjects?

PURPOSE: Verify the acute responses of static stretching (SS) on the rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis (VM), and vastus lateralis (VL) elasticity and knee/hip range of motion (ROM). Additionally, to investigate if there are consistency among quadriceps muscle elasticity after SS. METHODS: Acute effect of SS on pre-post-intervention design. Thirtheen healthy participants (both genders) proposed for a pre-post experimental design. RF, VM, and VL elasticity (strain ratio, SR) was evaluated bilaterally by ultrasound with quasi-static elastography. Higher SR values refer to more rigid tissues.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the potential of a novel 3-dimensional (3D) mechanical wave velocity mapping technique, based on the natural mechanical waves produced by the heart itself, to approach a noninvasive 3D stiffness mapping of the left ventricle. BACKGROUND: Myocardial fibrosis is recognized as a pathophysiological substrate of major cardiovascular disorders such as cardiomyopathies and valvular heart disease. As fibrosis leads to increased myocardial stiffness, ultrasound elastography measurements could provide important clinical information. METHODS: A 3D high frame
