A coupled magneto-mechanical-thermal constitutive model for transversely isotropic magnetorheological elastomers verified by experimental validation.

Magnetorheological elastomers, as a class of smart functional materials, have attracted considerable attention in various engineering and biomedical applications. Transversely isotropic MREs containing chain-like magnetic particle structures particularly exhibit enhanced mechanical and actuation properties compared with their isotropic counterparts. Employing nonlinear continuum mechanics framework together with finite strain theory, this study develops a physics-based constitutive model to predict the coupled magneto-mechanical-thermal behavior of such materials. In this formulation, the defo

Bio-based dynamic network engineering of aminated lignin for strong, tough, and self-healing polyurea elastomers.

Achieving a favorable balance between mechanical robustness and room-temperature self-healing remains challenging for polyurea elastomers because network reinforcement often restricts the chain mobility required for repair. To improve this balance, this study has established a dual dynamic network in which Mannich-aminated lignin serves as a multifunctional reactive node within a disulfide-containing polyurea matrix. Compared with unmodified lignin, aminated lignin exhibits improved compatibility and participates in network formation, generating rigid reinforcing domains with abundant hydrogen

Highly Tough, Notch-Insensitive, and Fast Self-Healing Thermoplastic Polyurethane Elastomers by Tailored Soft Segment Design.

Achieving toughness, notch insensitivity, and self-healing within a single thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) system is challenging. Hard domains formed by hydrogen-bonded urethane linkages provide mechanical strength but limit the chain mobility needed for healing, while soft domains enable elasticity but are more vulnerable to damage. We propose a soft-segment modification strategy that incorporates α,ω-hydroxyl end-functionalized polyacrylates into conventional TPU structures. Unlike our previous systems based on linear-alkyl acrylates (i.e., n-butyl acrylate), introducing branched-alkyl acry

Magneto-Tunable Surface Roughness and Hydrophobicity of Magnetoactive Elastomers Based on Polymer Networks with Different Architectures.

In this study, we present experimental investigations of the surface structure and water contact angles of magnetoactive elastomers (MAEs), which are controlled by an external magnetic field. Specifically, we examine how the polymer matrix architecture affects the surface roughness and wettability of MAEs in various magnetic fields. We performed a comparative analysis on MAEs based on a linear polysiloxane network and on a matrix of the same chemical nature containing side-grafted chains. We synthesized a series of magnetoactive elastomers containing 75 wt.% carbonyl iron and varying amounts o

Compatibility Effects of Waste Cooking Oil Biodiesel Blend on Fuel System Elastomers in Compression Ignition Engines.

Alternative energy sources, such as biodiesel, play a vital role in environmental protection. Waste cooking oil (WCO) biodiesel has promising applications in compression ignition engines. A major problem regarding biodiesel implementation is the deterioration and materials incompatibility of existing fuel system components with biodiesel. Variations in the composition of fuel prompted by the inclusion of biodiesel cause a variety of issues in diesel engine fuel systems where the elastomer is generally utilized as the fuel hose material and sealings. In this experimental work, the effects of th

Solvent-Dependent Sequence-Controlled Copolymerization of Lactones: Tailoring Material Properties from Robust Plastics to Tough Elastomers.

Copolymerization stands as a versatile and potent method for tailoring polymer properties by adjusting structural unit composition and sequence distribution. However, achieving sequence-controlled copolymerization in a one-step and one-pot process remains challenging. This study introduces a solvent-dependent sequence-controlled copolymerization strategy to produce block and statistical copolyesters from 4-phenyl-2-oxabicyclo[2.1.1]hexan-3-one (4Ph-BL) and ϵ-caprolactone (ϵ-CL). The distinct kinetics of the two monomers enable the facile synthesis of diblock and triblock copolyesters, PCL-b-P(

Colour Stability of Two Commercially Available Maxillofacial Prosthetic Elastomers after Outdoor Weathering in Al Jouf Province.

Facial prostheses are created from special elastomers modified for their specific physical and mechanical properties; however, they also show two common major clinical problems: gradual discolouration of the prosthesis over time in service environment and deterioration of static, dynamic, and physical properties. As a result of external environmental factors, facial prostheses may become discoloured and discolour by changing colour from intrinsic and extrinsic colouring, and this is associated with the intrinsic colour stability of elastomers and colourants. Thus, in this in vitro study, a com

An Ogden-like formulation incorporating phase-field fracture in elastomers: from brittle to pseudo-ductile failures.

Over the past 50 years the Ogden model has been widely used in material modelling owing to its ability to match accurately the experimental data on elastomers at large strain, as well as its mathematical properties, such as polyconvexity. In this paper, these characteristics are exploited to formulate a finite-strain model that incorporates, through the phase-field approach recently proposed by Wu (Wu 2017 J. Mech. Phys. Solids 103, 72-99) for small strains, a cohesive damage mechanism which leads to the progressive degradation of the material stiffness and to failure under tension. By properl

Healable and Recyclable Elastomers with Record-High Mechanical Robustness, Unprecedented Crack Tolerance, and Superhigh Elastic Restorability.

Spider silk is one of the most robust natural materials, which has extremely high strength in combination with great toughness and good elasticity. Inspired by spider silk but beyond it, a healable and recyclable supramolecular elastomer, possessing superhigh true stress at break (1.21 GPa) and ultrahigh toughness (390.2 MJ m-3 ), which are, respectively, comparable to and ≈2.4 times higher than those of typical spider silk, is developed. The elastomer has the highest tensile strength (ultimate engineering stress, 75.6 MPa) ever recorded for polymeric elastomers, rendering it the strongest and

Sensors and Actuators on Determining Parameters for Being Considered in Selection of Elastomers for Biomimetic Hands.

In this paper, the authors present a new methodology to study the viscoelastic behaviour of the human finger. The methodology is based on experimental research consisting of a finger's indentation with a small steel cylindrical object for various indentation speeds. The tests were realized on a CETR UMT-2 Tribometer for indentation speed between 0.02 mm/s and 4 mm/s with a normal load of up to 22 N. Using the force-deformation diagrams recorded at the smallest indentation speed determined the elastic modulus of the human finger according to an adapted Hertzian model. By considering the increas

Insight into the composition-dependent transition from auxetic nematic to frustrated smectic in liquid crystal elastomers.

The ability to optimize the properties of a material is particularly advantageous for applications. Here the tuneable properties of side-chain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are investigated. LCEs were fabricated using the same acrylate monomers, varying the proportion of mesogenic groups to influence the phase, density, and mechanical properties. The density increases with mesogenic content, varying from 1.11g/cm^{3} to 1.19g/cm^{3} as the mesogenic content is increased from 51 mol% to 99 mol%. The 7% increase in density was attributed to closer packing of the nanoscale network, observed di

A Review of Magnetic Elastomers from Material Design and Fabrication Methods to Applications in Soft Robots.

Magnetic elastomers (MEs) are a novel class of smart materials defined by their rapid and reversible mechanical property modulation under external magnetic fields. These unique functionalities of MEs empower the essential advantages for advanced magnetic soft robots to achieve untethered operation, complex shape morphing, and adaptive stiffness control in practical potential applications, such as minimally invasive surgery and confined-space exploration. However, although numerous reviews have examined MEs from various disciplinary viewpoints, a significant gap remains in systematically correl

Decoupling parameters of adhesion from viscoelasticity in the human perception of stickiness via shear-stiffening elastomers.

In engineering, the adhesion or "tack" of an object can be related to its bulk material properties and interfacial adhesion, sometimes quantified by a peak adhesive force or work of adhesion. However, it is unknown how these engineering contributions to adhesion compare to the human perception of "stickiness". Here, to decouple between adhesive and viscoelastic parameters, we used shear-stiffening elastomers to modulate viscoelastic and adhesive contributions by velocity. Through psychophysical testing, we discovered that the human perception of "stickiness" is best correlated to a non-canonic

Eucommia Ulmoides Gum-Inspired Topological Confinement Enables Direct Spinning of All-Solid-State Ionic Conductive Elastomers.

Stretchable conductive fibers have attracted considerable attention owing to their exceptional flexibility, deformation adaptability, and structural integrability. Many ionic conductive elastomers have been developed as promising materials for wearable electronics; however, their spinning into fibers remains challenging due to the inherent conflict between ionic conductivity and mechanical robustness. Herein, inspired by Eucommia ulmoides gum (EUG), we develop a topological confinement strategy to construct all-solid-state ionic conductive elastomers featuring a hyperbranched-nanocluster-bridg

Effects of Operating Mechanical Conditions and Polymer Networks of Nematic Elastomers on Photo-Induced Mechanical Performances.

Photoresponsive liquid-crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are promising candidates for light-controlled soft actuators. Photoinduced stress/strain originates from the changes in mechanical properties after light irradiation. However, the correlation between the photoinduced mechanical performance and in-use conditions such as stress/strain states and polymer network properties (such as effective crosslink density and dangling chain density) remains unexplored for practical applications. Here, isometric photo-induced stress or isotonic strain is investigated at different operating strains or stresse

Polyacrylate-Based Dielectric Elastomer Fiber Actuators for High-Performance Artificial Muscles.

Dielectric elastomer fiber actuators (DEFAs) are promising candidates for artificial muscle applications, owing to their high axial actuation and mechanical compliance, yet achieving scalable fabrication without compromising electromechanical performance remains a critical bottleneck. Existing continuous manufacturing routes are predominantly restricted to silicone elastomers, which yield limited actuation strains and low energy densities. Here, a continuous fabrication strategy that integrates coaxial wet spinning with in situ ultraviolet curing is developed to produce polyacrylate-based DEFA

Magnetically Programmable Hydrogel-Elastomer Composite for Engineering Controlled Equibiaxial Mechanical Microenvironments.

Precise and programmable mechanical stimulation is essential for constructing defined cellular microenvironments, yet existing in vitro stretching platforms often suffer from limited control over biaxial strain fields and reliable strain transfer. Here, we present a magnetically driven hydrogel-elastomer composite consisting of an auxetic-like inward-concave chamfered hard-magnetic soft actuator and a central GelMA matrix. Under a parallel magnetic field, the actuator undergoes in-plane expansion, transferring an approximately 10% near-equibiaxial strain to the hydrogel. Benzophenone-mediated

DLP 4D Printing of Programmable Molecularly-Engineered Liquid Crystal Elastomer Actuators.

Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are highly attractive for 4D printing due to their ability to undergo large, rapid, and reversible shape changes in response to external stimuli. While direct ink writing (DIW) enables mesogen alignment during extrusion, it remains limited in resolution and geometric complexity. In contrast, digital light processing (DLP) offers fast, high-resolution fabrication of complex architectures but lacks an intrinsic mechanism for aligning mesogens, which prevents reversible actuation. Here, we present a scalable and versatile strategy for DLP 4D printing of LCEs, based
