PURPOSE: Postoperative acute pain is a major obstacle to archiving key goals in modern perioperative treatment concepts such as ERAS® (enhanced recovery after surgery). Despite a multimodal pain management concept, some patients continue to suffer from severe pain. The aim of this analysis is to identify predictors of severe postoperative pain following elective minimally invasive intestinal surgery.
METHODS: Data from 49 patients, who underwent intestinal resection between April 2021 and March 2022 were used for this purpose. Various pre- and intraoperative characteristics were examined for

INTRODUCTION: Despite established ethical principles, a critical synthesis of how informed consent deficiencies, leading to costly malpractice lawsuits in elective orthopedic surgery, relate to medico-legal outcomes, documentation pitfalls, and team roles is lacking. This scoping review aimed to investigate the status of obtaining informed consent by the treatment team in elective orthopedic surgeries and the related legal consequences.
METHODS: Following the Arksey & O'Malley framework update by Levac et al., we conducted a comprehensive search across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science databases

OBJECTIVE: To compare safety profiles of overlapping and nonoverlapping surgical procedures at a large tertiary-referral center where overlapping surgery is performed.
BACKGROUND: Surgical procedures are frequently performed as overlapping, wherein one surgeon is responsible for 2 procedures occurring at the same time, but critical portions are not coincident. The safety of this practice has not been characterized.
METHODS: Primary analyses included elective, adult, inpatient surgical procedures from January 2013 to September 2015 available through University HealthSystem Consortium. Overlap

BACKGROUND: The term "complex groin hernia" is widely used in clinical practice but lacks a standardized operational definition and a structured framework to guide escalation, referral pathways, and approach selection.
METHODS: A three-round Delphi process was conducted with a fixed panel of 54 Italian expert abdominal wall surgeons evaluating 85 statements across elective and emergency scenarios spanning (1) definition of complexity, (2) hernia characteristics, (3) patient characteristics, and (4) previous surgical history. Items were scored on a 5-point Likert scale in Rounds 1-2 and on a 3

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cancer burden remains a global medical and financial challenge. Advances in surgical management have resulted in increased oncological surgeries that often involve anesthetic administration. This review aims to inform on anesthetic considerations when caring for cancer patients in the perioperative period.
RECENT FINDINGS: There are various retrospective studies and, more recently, several randomized controlled trials that have explored whether the choice of anesthesia (total intravenous anesthesia vs. inhaled anesthetic) results in a significant difference in cancer outcom

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to compare the gastric fluid volume (GFV) in children who fasted 1 versus 2 hours using ultrasound, after ingestion of a defined volume of clear fluid.
METHODS: Children scheduled for elective surgery were enrolled in this randomized, double-blinded, controlled trial. After receiving 3 mL kg -1 clear fluid, participants were randomized to have a gastric ultrasound after fasting for either 1 hour (1-hour group, n = 116) or 2 hours (2-hour group, n = 111). Our primary outcome was the GFV. Other outcomes included the antral cross-sectional area, frequency of high ris

BACKGROUND: Glucocorticoids are increasingly used perioperatively, principally to prevent nausea and vomiting. Safety concerns focus on the potential for hyperglycemia and increased infection. The authors hypothesized that glucocorticoids predispose to such adverse outcomes in a dose-dependent fashion after elective noncardiac surgery.
METHODS: The authors conducted a systematic literature search of the major medical databases from their inception to April 2016. Randomized glucocorticoid trials in adults specifically reporting on a safety outcome were included and meta-analyzed with Peto odds

Israel is among the few countries in the world where sex reassignment surgery (SRS) is performed in public hospitals. Today, the only center performing SRS in Israel is the Sheba Medical Center. A multidisciplinary committee grants authorization permitting surgery after a follow-up period of two years. We found that this multidisciplinary approach leads to the best therapeutic results. We briefly present the pre-operative evaluation, operative approach, post-operative course, final results and complications of sex reassignment surgery. This article aims to inform physicians of this therapeutic

BACKGROUND: Elective laparotomies account for a larger fraction of laparotomy procedures performed worldwide. Although surgical techniques continue to advance, the incidence of incisional hernia (IH) and other post-operative complications remain challenging to surgeons. This study aimed to evaluate the significance of using prophylactic mesh reinforcement during elective laparotomy.
METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science to identify studies that included adults undergoing elective abdominal surgery and compared prophylactic mesh reinforcement of th
