BACKGROUND: Occupational sprain and strain injuries are one of the most common types of nonfatal occupational injuries and a significant source of lost workdays. This study examines factors associated with severe work-related sprain/strain injuries to the back, shoulder, and knees.
METHODS: A synthetic case-control study was performed (controls were selected from the same pool of utility workers as cases). Cases included all electric utility workers who had experienced a severe work-related sprain/strain injury to the back, knee, or shoulder. Primary controls were selected from all workers wh

Electrical burns can cause a variety of clinical sequelae, including cardiac, renal, muscular, neurological, and ocular complications that require immediate monitoring and/or intervention by emergency medicine physicians to prevent further organ damage. These injuries can occur through a variety of mechanisms, including household electrical outlets, occupational exposures, and lightning strikes. The intensity of the electrical insult plays a major role in determining the severity of the resulting medical complications. Electrical injuries can lead to a wide range of subsequent complications in

BACKGROUND: Electrical injuries (EIs) result in severe damage to multiple body systems and pose significant challenges for recovery, often leading to prolonged hospital stays, delayed return to work, and higher rates of mental health issues. While EI survivors face unique physical, neurological, and psychological challenges distinct from other burn injury survivors, there is a lack of research on rehabilitation specific to this population.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this scoping review is to synthesize the available literature on what rehabilitation interventions entail for EI survivors and ex

Electrical burn injuries (EBI) affect both adults and children and are responsible for a very high number of major limb amputations. Their management is still a major challenge. This retrospective review concerns 42 children, admitted to an intensive burn care department in Tunisia for high electrical burns, from January 2016 to September 2022. The average age of our patients was 12 years, with a male predominance (90.5%). Electrotrauma was accidental in the majority of cases (93%) and secondary to a domestic accident in 54.8% of cases. Total body surface area was 19%. Burns were second degree

The cardiovascular effects of electronic cigarette use are unknown. Here we present a case describing a young, previously healthy patient without prior cardiopulmonary comorbidities who developed severe, acute cardiac dysfunction in the setting of e-cigarette use, in addition to the more commonly encountered respiratory symptoms. While pulmonary manifestations are characteristic of e-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI), the acute and reversible cardiomyopathy seen here has not been previously described in association with either EVALI or e-cigarette use.

Electrical injuries can have myriad presentations, including significant cardiac involvement. Arrhythmias are the most frequently experienced cardiac affliction, of which sinus tachycardia or bradycardia, ventricular fibrillation, atrial or ventricular premature beats and bundle branch block are most commonly reported. A 50-year-old man, with no prior history of cardiac disease, presented with palpitations following low voltage electrical injury. On examination, he was tachycardic with an irregularly irregular pulse. An ECG confirmed atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular rate.

A súlyos szövődményekkel járó áramütéses balesetek ugyan

Electrical injuries are a common occurrence and can be minor or even fatal depending on the voltage to which an individual has been exposed to. Electrical current causes tissue damage by producing heat due to local tissue resistance. Serious electrocution may manifest with cutaneous burns, visceral injuries, organ perforation, and cardiac and respiratory effects. Pneumothorax as a complication of electrical injury is a very rare entity. We report one such case of electrical burn injury with right-sided pneumothorax as an immediate complication.

Electrical injury causes direct damage to nerves. It may manifest as peripheral nerve injury, spinal cord damage, cerebellar ataxia, hypoxic encephalopathy, or intracerebral hemorrhage. Various factors determine the severity of electric injury, including type of current, amperage, voltage, tissue resistance, pathway of the current, and duration of contact with the body. However, the severity of the electrical injury is not proportional to the source voltage, visible burns, loss of consciousness, or neuroimaging findings. While most neurologic aftereffects due to electric injuries are immediate

PURPOSE: Electrical injury to the central nervous system may lead to neurologic compromise via pleiotropic mechanisms. It may cause current-related, thermal or nonthermal damage followed by secondary mechanisms.
METHODS: We herein report a case of a 20-year old man, who experienced a low-voltage electric injury due to an occupational accident.
RESULTS: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) one week after the insult allowed differentiation of pathophysiologic features including thermal, nonthermal and hypoxic cerebral lesions.
CONCLUSION: The capability of MRI assessing a variety of lesions for d

Electrical injuries in animals occur most often accidentally. They comprise contact to various forms of currents, including alternating, rotary, or direct currents. Depending on various parameters of the current (including the type of circuit, voltage, current and duration of exposure) and conditions of the animal (such as wet or dry hair coat and pathway of current through the body), lesions may be absent or may include early or localized development of rigor mortis, signs of acute circulatory failure, or severe thermoelectrical burns. Such burns may present as external current marks, singed

BACKGROUND: An appropriate and well-timed surgery has great impact on a patient's treatment and can prevent further damage to partially injured structures which if untreated will be lost leading to severe disability. In the present study we report our experience with early coverage of electrically injured upper extremity vital structures with encouraging results.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of early flap coverage (less than two weeks) after electrical injury in the induced wounds of upper extremity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records of electrically injured

In North America, electrical injuries result in approximately 20,000 emergency department visits every year. They are the most common form of occupationally related burn injury, and the fifth leading cause of occupational fatality in the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine the long-term sequelae of low-voltage electrical burn injuries. A retrospective hospital chart review was conducted among electrical burn patients, admitted to a regional adult burn centre or a rehabilitation hospital between January 1, 2002 and December 31, 2003, to find new symptoms documented at foll

Autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction is a serious complication of lightning and electrical trauma (L/ET). The ANS regulates the normal vegetative functioning of many organ systems. When ANS is compromised after lightning and electric trauma, patients are vulnerable to serious medical problems. Three conditions of ANS dysfunction of particular concern for L/ET patients are complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), cardiovascular abnormalities, and keraunoparalysis (KP). The patient with CRPS presents with pain, hyperpathia, sweating, and edema hours to days after trauma. Neurorehabilitation

Virtually every part of the body can be injured by electric current. The extent of injury to any given tissue will depend on many factors, including the nature of the tissue and the amount and duration of the electric current. In addition, cardiac and respiratory arrest can be induced by a number of mechanisms with little or no immediate tissue damage. Burns can be caused by the heating of tissue by electric current and by other mechanisms. Secondary trauma may result from falls, explosions, and other events initiated by electric forces. Nervous tissue has the least resistance to current flow
