EEG-Triggered Functional Electrical Stimulation Therapy for Restoring Upper Limb Function in Chronic Stroke with Severe Hemiplegia.

We report the therapeutic effects of integrating brain-computer interfacing technology and functional electrical stimulation therapy to restore upper limb reaching movements in a 64-year-old man with severe left hemiplegia following a hemorrhagic stroke he sustained six years prior to this study. He completed 40 90-minute sessions of functional electrical stimulation therapy using a custom-made neuroprosthesis that facilitated 5 different reaching movements. During each session, the participant attempted to reach with his paralyzed arm repeatedly. Stimulation for each of the movement phases (e

Effect of electrical stimulation therapy on upper extremity functional recovery and cerebral cortical changes in patients with chronic hemiplegia.

Hemiplegia is a common sequel of stroke and assisted living care is needed in many cases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of using surface electrode stimulation device in rehabilitation, in terms of functional improvement in upper limb and the changes in brain activation related to central nervous system reconstruction. Five patients with chronic hemiplegia received electrical stimulation therapy using the orthosis-type surface electrode stimulation device for 12 weeks. Training time was 30 min/day for the first weeks, and increased 30 min/day in every 4 weeks. Upper limb

The impact of transcutaneous electrical stimulation therapy on appendicostomy operation rates for children with chronic constipation--a single-institution experience.

PURPOSE: Appendicostomy for antegrade continence enema is a minimally invasive surgical intervention that has helped many children with chronic constipation. At our institution, since 2006, transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) has been trialed to treat slow-transit constipation (STC) in children. This retrospective audit aimed to determine if TES use affected appendicostomy-formation rates and to monitor changes in practice. We hypothesized that appendicostomy rates have decreased for STC but not for other indications. METHODS: Appendicostomy-formation rate was determined for the 5 yea

Selecting therapy for sustained ventricular tachycardias: importance of the sensitivity and specificity of programmed electrical stimulation for predicting arrhythmia recurrences.

Antiarrhythmic therapy for prevention of sustained ventricular tachycardia is commonly guided by programmed electrical stimulation, and the persistent ability to initiate ventricular tachycardia during drug therapy often leads to the use of nonpharmacologic therapies such as surgery. Prior studies suggest that programmed stimulation has a high sensitivity but a lower specificity for predicting recurrences of ventricular tachycardia during drug therapy. We constructed a model to evaluate the impact of various programmed stimulation specificities and sensitivities on total mortality when patient

ATP and repetitive electric stimulation increases leukemia inhibitory factor expression in astrocytes: A potential role for astrocytes in the action mechanism of electroconvulsive therapy.

AIM: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is effective for psychiatric disorders. However, its action mechanism remains unclear. We previously reported that transcription factor 7 (TCF7) was increased in patients successfully treated with ECT. TCF7 regulates Wnt pathway, which regulates adult hippocampal neurogenesis. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis is involved in the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. Astrocytes play a role in adult hippocampal neurogenesis via neurogenic factors. Of astrocyte-derived neurogenic factors, leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) and fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2)

The Effectiveness of Combined Mirror Therapy and Contralateral Controlled Functional Electrical Stimulation Therapy in a Stroke Patient With Upper Limb Motor Paralysis: A Case Report.

Severe upper limb motor paralysis following a stroke significantly limits patients' daily function and quality of life. While traditional therapies like constraint-induced therapy, muscle strengthening, and exercise are commonly used, they often lack effectiveness for severe cases due to their reliance on voluntary movement. In contrast, mirror therapy and contralaterally controlled functional electrical stimulation (CCFES) have shown potential by directly engaging neural pathways to promote recovery. This case report describes combining two methods to create a more effective approach for enha

Efficacy of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation Combined with Traditional Swallowing Therapy in Acute Stroke Patients with Dysphagia: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) has been proposed as an adjunct to conventional swallowing therapy; however, evidence regarding its additive benefit in early-stage stroke remains inconclusive. This study aimed to determine whether NMES combined with traditional swallowing therapy provides superior outcomes compared with traditional therapy alone in enteral tube-dependent patients with acute and subacute post-stroke dysphagia. A total of 57 participants with post-stroke dysphagia who met the inclusion criteria were randomly assigned to either the NMES combined with traditional swall

Effects of physical therapy with neuromuscular electrical stimulation in acute and late septic shock patients: A randomised crossover clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients with sepsis and immobility in the intensive care unit are associated with muscle weakness, and early mobilisation can counteract it. However, during septic shock, mobilisation is often delayed due to the severity of the illness. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) may be an alternative to mobilise these patients early. This study aims to identify whether NMES performed within the first 72 hours of septic shock diagnosis or later is safe from a metabolic perspective. METHODS: This is the analysis of two randomised controlled crossover studies. Patients with acute s

Home-Based Functional Electrical Stimulation-Assisted Hand Therapy Video Games for Children With Hemiplegia: Development and Proof-of-Concept.

We describe the development and three case reports of a home-based intervention for children with hand hemiplegia that integrates custom video games with contralaterally controlled functional electrical stimulation (CCFES). With CCFES, stimulated opening of the more-affected hand is modulated by volitional opening of the less-affected hand. Video games that solicit goal-oriented, skill-requiring movement have shown promise for treating hemiplegia, but they have not previously been combined with electrical stimulation in children. Three children ages 8, 9, and 11 with moderate-to-severe hand he
