Predictive model for assessing cognitive impairment by quantitative electroencephalography.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the utility of quantitative electroencephalographic analysis as an indicator of cognitive impairment, we examined the correlation between Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores and quantitative electroencephalographic (QEEG) power values in elderly patients and constructed a regression model to predict MMSE scores. BACKGROUND: Because of the growing number of elderly individuals with cognitive deficits, there is an increasing need for simple and objective methods with which to evaluate cognitive function. Although QEEG is reportedly a useful method for this purpose,

Subjective signs in premotor epilepsy: confirmation by stereo-electroencephalography.

Subjective manifestations inaugurating frontal seizures are less well known than those observed in temporal seizures. We report eleven consecutive patients who underwent surgery for premotor epilepsy. Six of them had focal cortical dysplasia. Ictal symptomatology was analysed to establish electroclinical correlations. The localisation of the epileptogenic zone was assessed by stereoelectroencephalographic studies. Subjective manifestations were described in all cases, more frequently in a sensory rather than an emotional or psychological fashion. Focal seizures limited to subjective features w

Absence seizures effects on reading revealed by video-electroencephalography.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of absence seizures on reading have not been studied. The purpose of this paper is to show some alterations in reading during absence seizures in patients with video-electroencephalographic recordings. METHODS: Patients were selected if absences seizures were the only type of seizures. They were studied at rest with eyes closed and while reading aloud a text by simultaneous bipolar electroencephalographic and video recordings. RESULTS: Eight patients were studied with 34 events. Absences ranged from 1-12 events in twenty-five minutes recording, seizures duration ranged

[Neurophysiological diagnosis of AIDS dementia complex: importance of electroencephalography].

This study reports the results obtained by an Electroencephalographic screening of 450 HIV-seropositive patients, belonging to different stages of infection. The major bioelectrical changes of cerebral activity were evident in AIDS group (87.2%) and in ARC group (64.5%), whereas mild abnormalities were present in LAS group (38.8%) and in asymptomatic infection (19.2%), often without any evidence of neuropsychological impairment. Therefore, we emphasize the usefulness and the sensibility of Electroencephalography and, in particular, of Electroencephalography coupled with Computerized Spectral A

Quantitative Electroencephalography in Hemodialysis: Scoping Review and Translational Framework.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment and cerebral dysfunction are common among patients with end-stage kidney disease undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. Repeated intradialytic hemodynamic stress, including reductions in cerebral blood flow and episodes of intradialytic hypotension, has been associated with adverse neurological outcomes. Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) offers a noninvasive approach for continuous assessment of cerebral activity; however, its potential role in dialysis monitoring remains unclear because of methodological heterogeneity and implementation challenges. Evaluating corticokinematic coherence using electroencephalography and human pose estimation.

Objective. While peripheral mechanisms of proprioception are well understood, the cortical processing of its feedback during dynamic and complex movements remains less clear. Corticokinematic coherence (CKC), which quantifies the coupling between limb movements and sensorimotor cortex activity, offers a way to investigate this cortical processing. However, ecologically valid CKC assessment poses technical challenges. Thus, by integrating Electroencephalography (EEG) with Human Pose Estimation (HPE), this study validates the feasibility and validity of a novel methodology for measuring CKC durin

Amplitude-Integrated Electroencephalography: A Readily Available Tool for Neonatologists.

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is a common condition occurring at birth, impairing central nervous system function. Therapeutic hypothermia is beneficial for suspected HIE as it reduces mortality and disability in survivors but not for other types of encephalopathy (e.g., metabolic). Amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) complements limited resource Neonatal Intensive Care Units as a screening tool that can provide information regarding the degree of encephalopathy and electrographic seizures. Patients with HIE are at increased risk for seizures, which are subclinical in ha

Objective Recognition of Tinnitus Location Using Electroencephalography Connectivity Features.

Purpose: Tinnitus is a common but obscure auditory disease to be studied. This study will determine whether the connectivity features in electroencephalography (EEG) signals can be used as the biomarkers for an efficient and fast diagnosis method for chronic tinnitus. Methods: In this study, the resting-state EEG signals of tinnitus patients with different tinnitus locations were recorded. Four connectivity features [including the Phase-locking value (PLV), Phase lag index (PLI), Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC), and Transfer entropy (TE)] and two time-frequency domain features in the EEG

Hyperventilation during routine electroencephalography: are three minutes really necessary?

OBJECTIVE: Hyperventilation induces absence seizures in children with absence epilepsy, and routine electroencephalography studies include three minutes of hyperventilation. We studied the duration of hyperventilation required to provoke a first absence seizure to determine whether three minutes of the procedure are indeed necessary. METHODS: Electroencephalography records of children who experienced absence seizures during hyperventilation were reviewed. The time from hyperventilation onset to a first and further seizure(s) was measured, and the occurrence of absences during the posthyperven

Electroencephalography in pediatric moyamoya disease: reappraisal of clinical value.

PURPOSE: The clinical value of electroencephalography (EEG) in pediatric moyamoya disease has been underestimated, though the characteristic patterns are well known. We undertook this study to evaluate the clinical value of EEG as a diagnostic and postoperative follow-up modality in pediatric moyamoya disease. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the pre and postoperative EEG with effective hyperventilation in 127 pediatric moyamoya patients and compared their patterns with hemodynamic images. RESULTS: One hundred and two patients (80.3 %) among 127 showed abnormal EEG findings before revasc

Electroencephalography during normotensive and hypertensive pregnancy: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: The objective of this review was to evaluate the available medical literature concerning the electroencephalogram (EEG) during hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. All articles found during a MEDLINE and Embase database search on the subject of EEG differences associated with hypertensive disorders in pregnancy were screened for eligibility. In all, 22 articles which describe the EEG during preeclampsia (PE)/eclampsia were retrieved. Abnormal EEG findings were observed in the majority of the preeclamptic/eclamptic patients, consisting of slow waves most frequently localized in the

Electroencephalography of demented and non-demented Parkinson's disease patients.

We investigated the correlation between electroencephalography (EEG) abnormalities and dementia in Parkinson's disease. Three groups of subjects were examined: Parkinson's disease patients without dementia, Parkinson's disease patients with dementia, and healthy age-matched controls. Dementia was assessed with the use of Mini-Mental State Examination. All subjects underwent a routine EEG examination with determination of arousal reaction to eye opening, hyperventilation and photic stimulation. Demented patients with Parkinson's disease more often showed no response to eye opening and presented

[Electroencephalography in epileptic disorders and acute convulsions (author's transl)].

the most important examination of epileptic seizures is the EEG because it is able to reveal interictal changes which indicate pathological processes in neuronal tracts. Diffuse slowing can be seen postical or due to intoxication after both has been excluded in diffuse cortical atrophy. Focal slowing in adults is always suspective of a tumour. -General paroxysmal discharges are frequently characteristical of an epileptic convulsive disorder. Focal spikes do correlate well with the type of seizure. Paroxysmal discharges are primarily indicative of an epileptic disorder-they do, however, occur a
