Flash visual-evoked potentials and flash electroretinography in the preoperative visual prognosis of eyes with cataracts.

This study evaluated the reliability of flash visual-evoked potentials and flash electroretinography in the prognosis of postoperative visual acuity after cataract extraction. We tested 94 patients with cataract in whom the preoperative visual acuity ranged from light perception to 3/10. On the basis of the electrophysiologic tests, we formulated three types of preoperative visual prognosis: high, intermediate, and poor. To assess the postoperative visual acuity, all subjects were followed for at least three months after cataract extraction. Visual acuity was subdivided in three arbitrary clas

Use of pattern electroretinography to differentiate acute optic neuritis from acute anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

The transient pattern electroretinogram (PERG) was recorded from 16 patients with acute optic neuritis and from 13 patients with acute non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION). All patients were tested within 35 days from the the onset of visual symptoms and all had significant central visual field abnormalities in their affected eyes as quantified by automated perimetry. Analysis of the PERGs showed that the amplitude of the N95 peak was abnormally reduced for each eye affected with AION while it remained normal in optic neuritis. No significant alteration in P50 amplitude was

Electroretinography and Gene Expression Measures Implicate Phototransduction and Metabolic Shifts in Chick Myopia and Hyperopia Models.

The Retinal Ion-Driven Fluid Efflux (RIDE) model theorizes that phototransduction-driven changes in trans-retinal ion and fluid transport underlie the development of myopia (short-sightedness). In support of this model, previous functional studies have identified the attenuation of outer retinal contributions to the global flash electroretinogram (gfERG) following weeks of myopia induction in chicks, while discovery-driven transcriptome studies have identified changes to the expression of ATP-driven ion transport and mitochondrial metabolism genes in the retina/RPE/choroid at the mid- to late-

Evaluating fine changes in visual function of diabetic eyes using spatial-sweep steady-state pattern electroretinography.

The visual function of diabetic eyes was assessed to evaluate spatial-sweep steady-state pattern electroretinography (swpPERG) as a potential high-sensitivity analysis method. Data from 24 control eyes, 28 diabetic eyes without diabetic retinopathy (DR), and 30 diabetic eyes with DR (all with best-corrected visual acuity [BCVA] better than logMAR 0.05; median age, 51) in response to spatial-patterned and contrast-reversed stimuli of sizes 1 (thickest) to 6 were converted into the frequency domain using a Fourier transform and expressed as signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). SNRs of diabetic eyes, b

Diagnosis of an X-linked type 2 congenital stationary night blindness using electroretinography and CACNA1F sequencing.

A 4-year-old boy, with no history of relevance, presented with bilateral visual impairment, more so in scotopic conditions, and did not improve with optical correction. No significant funduscopic abnormalities were seen, leading to a suspicion of retinal dystrophy. Sequencing of the CACNA1F gene detected the c.3081C>A (p.Tyr1027Ter) mutation, which had occurred de novo in the patient's mother. This mutation, in the aforementioned clinical context, and with a compatible electronegative pattern, establishes the diagnosis of X-linked type 2 congenital stationary night blindness. A seven-year electroretinography follow-up of a patient with melanoma-associated retinopathy stabilized on pembrolizumab treatment.

PURPOSE: Melanoma-associated retinopathy (MAR) is a rare, auto-immune paraneoplastic syndrome associated with metastatic melanoma. Over the last decade, patient survival has improved dramatically, mainly due to the development of immunotherapy. However, data on long-term MAR patient follow-up and response to modern standard-of-care treatment are lacking. This single-patient case report presents a seven-year, multimodal follow-up of a young MAR patient treated with immune-checkpoint inhibitors. OBSERVATIONS: A 46-year-old Israeli male with a history of cutaneous malignant melanoma presented wi

Suppression of electromagnetic interference in electroretinography from a patient with an implanted left ventricular assist device (LVAD).

PURPOSE: A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is an implantable cardiac pump that uses a magnetically-levitating rotor to pump blood into circulation for patients with congestive heart failure. The continuous high-frequency motion of the pump can cause significant interference in electroretinography (ERG) recordings. We evaluate filtering methods to improve ERG quality in the presence of LVAD interference. METHODS: A patient with an implanted LVAD was referred to our clinic for ERG testing on suspicion of a retinal dystrophy. Full-field ERG (ffERG) and pattern ERG (pERG) were performed acc

Novel Structure-Function Models for Estimating Retinal Ganglion Cell Count Using Pattern Electroretinography in Glaucoma Suspects.

Background/Objectives: The early detection of retinal ganglion cell (RGC) dysfunction is critical for timely intervention in glaucoma suspects (GSs). The combined structure-function index (CSFI), which uses visual field and optical coherence tomography (OCT) data to estimate RGC counts, may be of limited utility in GSs. This study evaluates whether steady-state pattern electroretinogram (ssPERG)-derived estimates better predict early structural changes in GSs. Methods: Fifty eyes from 25 glaucoma suspects underwent ssPERG and spectral-domain OCT. Estimated RGC counts (eRGCC) were calculated us
