Genetic epidemiology of Greenland.

The Inuit (Eskimo) gene pool is in many respects similar to that of East Asian populations. Some polymorphisms imply frequent occurrence of disorders comparatively rare in Western Europe (e.g. lactose and sucrose malabsorptions). Low frequencies of alleles for slow isoniazid acetylation and sparteine/debrisoquine oxidation indicate slow elimination of a multitude of drugs. Autoimmune disorders (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, Graves' disease and psoriasis) are rare, possibly explained by the associations of these disorders with HLA-alleles rare in the Inuit (e.g

Nonesophageal Eosinophilic Gastrointestinal Disorders: Clinical Care and Future Directions.

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders are a set of conditions with a wide range of clinical manifestations and treatment modalities. The disorders are suspected to result from an abnormal inflammatory response to allergen (s), and individuals may develop a relapsing or chronic disease, if the allergen is not eliminated. Mechanisms of disease pathogenesis, including the humoral immune response, need to be fully elucidated. A variety of therapies are used, although there is a lack of well-defined randomized, prospective studies. Other therapeutic options are needed as the current treatments ha

Effect of Supplementation With Omega-3 Fatty Acids, Magnesium, and Zinc on Canine Behavioral Disorders: Results of a Pilot Study.

Recent discoveries have shown that the chances of a dog developing a behavioral disorder may depend upon a number of factors including nutrition. The current pilot study was designed to provide an assessment of the efficacy of a dietary supplement containing omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, and zinc on some common behavioral disorders in a population of Iranian domestic dogs. In total, 48 dogs including 6 dogs without any behavior disorder (control group) and 42 dogs with at least 1 common behavioral disorder, namely excessive activity, inappropriate elimination, fearfulness, destructiveness, a

Idiopathic physical symptoms: a common manifestation of psychiatric disorders in primary care.

Worldwide, patients with common mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety, have a tendency to present first to primary care exhibiting idiopathic physical symptoms. Typically, these symptoms consist of pain and other physical complaints that remain medically unexplained. While in the past, traditional psychopathology emphasized the relevance of somatic presentations for disorders, such as depression, in the last few decades, the "somatic component" has been neglected in the assessment and treatment of psychiatric patients. Medical specialties have come up with a variety of "fashionable"

[Recent development of the ICD-11 focusing on the draft of its linear structure].

I overviewed the draft of the linear structure (22nd May, 2013) of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, Eleventh Revision. In this draft, sleep and sexual disorders were not included in mental and behavioural disorders. The World Health Organization decided not to regard them as mental disorders. The primary classification of neurocognitive disorders was also not included in mental and behavioural disorders. In the draft of the linear structure, 25 major categories were classified: neurodevelopmental disorders, disorders of speech and language,

Kyrle's disease.

Kyrle's disease (KD) is a dermatosis which was first described by Kyrle as "hyperkeratosis follicularis et parafollicularis in cutem penetrans" in 1916. Perforating dermatoses are a heterogeneous disorder group characterised by transepithelial elimination. KD has been seen in association with multiple disorders, including diabetes mellitus, renal and liver diseases, congestive heart failure, hyperlipidaemia, infective diseases and abnormal metabolism of vitamin A. This case report presents two patients with KD with associated systemic disease.

Nutritional and Psychological Considerations for Dietary Therapy in Eosinophilic Esophagitis.

The step-up empiric elimination diet, starting from one/two food groups of most local allergens remains the current gold standard for a dietary approach in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) patients. Milk, followed by wheat and egg, is the most frequent food that triggers EoE in pediatric and adult patients. Elimination diets, with restrictions over four food groups, may be limited to highly motivated patients, in which nutritional counseling is recommended. Malnourishment is uncommon in EoE patients and likely multifactorial (concomitant gastrointestinal eosinophilic disorders or IgE-mediated fo

The elimination of disease: a mixed blessing.

The increase in life expectancy that would result from the elimination of certain diseases and the resulting change in hospital utilization vary, depending on the disease. In some cases, life expectancy would rise and total days spent in hospital would decline, while in others, the gain in life expectancy would be accompanied by an increase in hospital days. For instance, if mental health disorders were eliminated, the increase in life expectancy at age 45 would be minimal: from 34.9 to 35.3 years, but time spent in hospital would decline from 168 to 151 days. By contrast, if diseases of the c

[Hyperventilation syndrome].

Hyperventilation syndrome is a disorder affecting children and adults, mostly women. It is frequently associated with anxiety disorders, and greatly affects quality of life. Diagnosis, which unfortunately is most often established late, is a diagnosis of elimination. It rests on a wide range of non-specific signs, on Nijmegën's clinical scale as well as on a hyperventilation provocative test. In most cases, specialized therapeutic interventions allow for an adequate control of ventilation and symptom relief.

The New Status of Parasitic Diseases in the COVID-19 Pandemic-Risk Factors or Protective Agents?

It is possible that parasites may influence the course of COVID-19 infection, as either risk factors or protective agents; as such, the current coronavirus pandemic may affect the diagnosis and prevention of parasitic disease, and its elimination programs. The present review highlights the similarity between the symptoms of human parasitoses and those of COVID-19 and discuss their mutual influence. The study evaluated selected human parasitoses with similar symptoms to COVID-19 and examined their potential influence on SARS-CoV-2 virus invasion. The available data suggest that at least several

Comparative toxicity and toxicokinetic studies of oxiracetam and (S)-oxiracetam in dogs.

Oxiracetam (ORT) is known as a derivative of piracetam in the family of nootropics for treating memory impairment and cognition disorders. Given the chiral toxicological concerns surrounding ORT and the absence studies of (S)-ORT, the toxicity and toxicokinetics of (S)-ORT, and comparative toxicology of oxiracetam were systematically investigated in dogs following acute and 13-week repeated oral dosing. The animal toxicity mainly manifested as loose stools in both the acute and the 13-week studies. The no-observed-adverse-effect level is proposed to be 100 mg/kg. The 13-week toxicokinetics stu

Congenital syphilis--United States, 2000.

In 1998, CDC initiated intensive efforts to eliminate syphilis from the United States. The following year, the National Syphilis Elimination Plan was launched with the goal of reducing primary and secondary (P&S) syphilis in adults to <0.4 cases per 100,000 population. A decrease in syphilis among women of reproductive age usually is followed by reductions in congenital syphilis (CS) rates. CS occurs when the spirochete Treponema pallidum is transmitted from a pregnant woman with syphilis to her fetus. Untreated syphilis during pregnancy may lead to stillbirth, neonatal death, and infant disor

[Correction of kyphosis in tuberculous spondylitis in children].

Various modifications of radical reparative surgery were made in 145 children with tuberculous spondylitis were comparatively analyzed. Greatest correction of kyphosis was achieved by combining anterior spinal repair with posterior plunged contractors, in additional resection of the apical vertebral arch in particular. There is a direct correlation between the degree of compression of the dural sac and the severity of neurological disorders. Anterior decompression of the spinal cord is an obligatory surgical component in tuberculous spondylitis, eliminates central stenosis of the spinal canal;

Integrated Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Comorbid Cannabis Use and Anxiety Disorders.

Cannabis use disorders (CUDs) co-occur with anxiety disorders at high rates, presumably because some individuals with anxiety disorders may rely on cannabis to manage anxiety. Motivation enhancement therapy (MET) combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an efficacious intervention for CUD, yet outcomes are worse for patients with elevated anxiety. The integration of MET-CBT with False Safety Behavior Elimination Treatment (FSET) may be useful with anxious CUD patients, as the use of cannabis to manage anxiety can be targeted as a false safety behavior. Here, we describe the integrat

Therapeutic plasma exchange in the neurologic intensive care setting recommendation for clinical practice.

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is a well-established therapeutic procedure commonly used in many neurologic immune-mediated disorders. It is thought that the beneficial effects of TPE occur through elimination of pathognomonic autoantibodies, immune complexes, inflammatory mediators, complement components and cytokines, which play a crucial role in many kinds of neurologic autoimmune disease. In various neurologic disorders, randomized controlled studies have demonstrated the efficacy of TPE (e.g., in acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (Guillain-Barré syndrome), chronic inflamm

Eosinophilic esophagitis, gastroenteritis, and colitis in a patient with prior parasite exposure.

Eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGID) comprise a spectrum of inflammatory diseases that can affect any segment of the gastrointestinal tract. The pathogenesis of these conditions is complex; differentiating between primary and secondary forms of these disorders can be clinically challenging. We report a case of primary EGID in a patient with remote parasite exposure, whose symptoms were initially attributed to irritable bowel syndrome. Endoscopy revealed the rare finding of EGID involving the entire gastrointestinal tract; symptoms improved with an elimination diet. This case raises t
