Stereotactic surgeries for abuse syndromes: Patient selection and results.

It is known that in present time heroin addiction is the most widespread and difficult to treat. It includes two factors: physical and psychological addiction. The vast majority of patients remained mentally addicted to drugs after physical drug addiction has been eliminated and the organism has been completely detoxed. It is an indomitable desire to take drugs. Neurophysiological mechanisms are in base of psychological dependence. It is similar to those that implement obsessive states (obsessive-compulsive disorders). The central role in these neurophysiological mechanisms is played by limbic

Pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic assessment of the ivermectin and abamectin nematodicidal interaction in cattle.

In a context of nematodicidal resistance, anthelmintic combinations have emerged as a reliable pharmacological strategy to control gastrointestinal nematodes in grazing systems of livestock production. The current work evaluated the potential drug-drug interactions following the coadministration of two macrocyclic lactones (ML) ivermectin (IVM) and abamectin (ABM) to parasitized cattle using a pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) approach. The kinetic behavior of both compounds administered either separately or coadministered was assessed and the therapeutic response of the combination was

One Health approach for elimination of human anthrax in a tribal district of Odisha: Study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Anthrax is a major but neglected zoonotic disease of public health concern in India with Odisha contributing a major share to the disease burden. Bacillus anthracis spores can be found naturally in soil and commonly affect both animals and humans around the world. Domestic and wild animals such as cattle, sheep, goats, and deer can become infected when they inhale or ingest spores from contaminated soil, plants, or water. Anthrax can be fatal if patients are not treated promptly with antibiotics. This protocol aims to describe the implementation and evaluation of the 'One Health' i

Peripheral and central compensatory mechanisms for impaired vagus nerve function during peripheral immune activation.

BACKGROUND: Determining the etiology and possible treatment strategies for numerous diseases requires a comprehensive understanding of compensatory mechanisms in physiological systems. The vagus nerve acts as a key interface between the brain and the peripheral internal organs. We set out to identify mechanisms compensating for a lack of neuronal communication between the immune and the central nervous system (CNS) during infection. METHODS: We assessed biochemical and central neurotransmitter changes resulting from subdiaphragmatic vagotomy and whether they are modulated by intraperitoneal i

Pro-dopamine regulator, KB220Z, attenuates hoarding and shopping behavior in a female, diagnosed with SUD and ADHD.

Background Addictive-like behaviors (e.g., hoarding and shopping) may be the result of the cumulative effects of dopaminergic and other neurotransmitter genetic variants as well as elevated stress levels. We, therefore, propose that dopamine homeostasis may be the preferred goal in combating such challenging and unwanted behaviors, when simple dopaminergic activation through potent agonists may not provide any resolution. Case presentation C.J. is a 38-year-old, single, female, living with her mother. She has a history of substance use disorder as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disord

Sickness behaviors in response to unusual external events in healthy cats and cats with feline interstitial cystitis.

OBJECTIVE: To compare sickness behaviors (SB) in response to unusual external events (UEE) in healthy cats with those of cats with feline interstitial cystitis (FIC). DESIGN: Prospective observational study. ANIMALS: 12 healthy cats and 20 donated cats with FIC. PROCEDURES: Cats were housed in a vivarium. Sickness behaviors referable to the gastrointestinal and urinary tracts, the skin, and behavior problems were recorded by a single observer for 77 weeks. Instances of UEE (eg, changes in caretakers, vivarium routine, and lack of interaction with the investigator) were identified during 11

Protective effects of quercetin, polydatin, and folic acid and their mixtures in a zebrafish (Danio rerio) fetal alcohol spectrum disorder model.

Protective effects of quercetin (QUE), polydatin (POL), and folic acid (FA) and their mixtures were tested using zebrafish to model fetal alcohol spectrum disorder in this study. Zebrafish embryos were exposed to 150 mM ethanol for 6 or 22 h and co-treated with QUE, POL, FA, and their mixtures (37.5-100.0 μM). Epiboly progression, teratogenic effects, and behavior were evaluated. Ethanol exposure reduced epiboly, and FA and QUE protected against these ethanol-induced defects. POL did not reduce epiboly defects. The mixture QUE + FA showed a possible antagonistic effect. The observed teratogeni

Recovery from behavior and developmental effects of chronic oral methylphenidate following an abstinence period.

Chronic oral methylphenidate (MP) exposure in rats is associated with numerous developmental and behavioral consequences. The present study investigated the persistence of the effects of chronic oral MP exposure after abstinence from MP use. Male and female rats were exposed to daily orally self-administered water, low dose MP (LD), or high dose (HD) MP for 13 weeks, followed by a 4-week abstinence period. Fluid, food consumption and bodyweights were monitored and animals were tested for locomotor activity, anxiety- and depressive-like symptoms, learning and memory, and social behavior during

The influence of temperature on courtship and mate choice in a wolf spider: implications for mating success in variable environments.

The selection of animal signal form often changes significantly with the environment, yet signal form may be environment-dependent. Little is known about how variation in individual responses to changing environments affects the relationship between selection and the subsequent evolution of signal traits. To address this question, we assess the effects of variation in temperature on individual signaling and mating behavior responses across temperatures in the wolf spider Schizocosa floridana. By running repeated-measures trials, we find that temperature has predictable effects on signal form,

Gene Therapy in Combination with Nitrogen Scavenger Pretreatment Corrects Biochemical and Behavioral Abnormalities of Infant Citrullinemia Type 1 Mice.

Citrullinemia type I (CTLN1) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the gene encoding argininosuccinate synthetase 1 (ASS1) that catalyzes the third step of the urea cycle. CTLN1 patients suffer from impaired elimination of nitrogen, which leads to neurotoxic levels of circulating ammonia and urea cycle byproducts that may cause severe metabolic encephalopathy, death or irreversible brain damage. Standard of care (SOC) of CTLN1 consists of daily nitrogen-scavenger administration, but patients remain at risk of life-threatening decompensations. We evaluated the therapeuti

Effects of forebrain circumventricular organ ablation on drinking or salt appetite after sodium depletion or hypernatremia.

In many previous studies, one or the other forebrain circumventricular organ, the subfornical organ (SFO) or organum vasculosum laminae terminalis (OVLT), was lesioned to test whether it was critical for the behavioral or physiological responses to sodium depletion and hypernatremia. These studies conflict in their conclusions. The present study was designed to create discrete lesions of both the SFO and OVLT in the same animals and to compare these with rats having a lesion of only the SFO or OVLT. Both the OVLT-lesioned group and the combined SFO + OVLT-lesioned group drank significantly mor

Chronic administration of alcohol in the developing rat: expression of functional tolerance and alcohol olfactory aversions.

Three experiments were designed to evaluate the acquisition and expression of tolerance to ethanol in preweanling rats. Administrations were begun on Postnatal Day 13 (PD13) and continued, on alternating days, through PD23. Following either three or five administrations of a 2.5 g/kg dose of ethanol, animals expressed tolerance to the motor-impairing consequences of acute ethanol, as measured through attenuated latencies to perform a righting reflex. However, no tolerance was evident when it was assessed through the hypothermic response to ethanol delivery (Experiment 1). The results of subseq

An automated method by which effects of compounds on locomotor activity and spontaneous neuropathic pain-specific movements can be simultaneously evaluated in rats with chronic-constriction nerve injury.

Neuropathic pain patients are characterized by evoked pain (hyperalgesia and allodynia) and spontaneous pain, the latter of which is the predominant symptom. In animal models of neuropathic pain, effects of test compounds on spontaneous pain-related behaviors have been evaluated by direct visual observation. In addition, by performing another locomotor activity experiment in normal animals, it is also indispensable to examine whether test compounds cause motor impairment to avoid overestimation of their analgesic activities. In the present study, we developed spontaneous pain-specific and auto

EMG Testing throughout behavioral recovery after rat sciatic nerve crush injury results in exuberant motoneuron dendritic hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral nerve injury (PNI) is the most common type of nerve trauma yet, while injured motoneurons exhibit a robust capacity for regeneration, behavioral recovery is protracted and typically poor. Neurotherapeutic approaches to PNI and repair have primarily focused on the enhancement of axonal regeneration, in terms of rate, axonal sprouting, and reconnection connectivity. Both electrical stimulation (ES) and treatment with androgens [e.g., testosterone propionate (TP)] have been demonstrated to enhance axonal sprouting, regeneration rate and functional recovery following PNI. The Rabbit Model of Cryptococcal Meningitis.

Cryptococcal meningitis (CM) is a fungal disease caused by the invasion of Cryptococcus yeast cells into the central nervous system. The organism is thought to enter the body through the lungs and then escape due to dysregulation of the immune response. Multiple animal species have been used to model the infection and characterize CM including mice, rats, dogs, guinea pigs, and rabbits. The rabbit model has over 40 years of data and has been used to study host-pathogen interactions and the efficacy of antifungal therapeutics. The model begins with immune suppression to eliminate the lymphocyti

Chemoptogenetic ablation of neuronal mitochondria in vivo with spatiotemporal precision and controllable severity.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is implicated in the pathogenesis of multiple neurological diseases, but elucidation of underlying mechanisms is limited experimentally by the inability to damage specific mitochondria in defined neuronal groups. We developed a precision chemoptogenetic approach to target neuronal mitochondria in the intact nervous system in vivo. MG2I, a chemical fluorogen, produces singlet oxygen when bound to the fluorogen-activating protein dL5** and exposed to far-red light. Transgenic zebrafish expressing dL5** within neuronal mitochondria showed dramatic MG2I- and light-depende

[ANTISEIZURE ACTIVITY OF C EPHALARIA GIGANTEA ROOT EXTRACT].

Antiseizure activity of Cephalaria gigantea root extract was studied using PTZ- and/or audiogenic seizure models in outbred Wistar and inbred Krouchinsky- Molodkina rats respectively. In PTZ - model onset of tonic- clonic seizures, latencies to the beginning of the seizure activity, and mortality, and similarly in audiogenic seizures behavioral convulsive reactions , facial automatisms and latency to wild running were evaluated. The extract is used traditionally in Georgian folk medicine as anticonvulsant drug. In this study it was evidenced experimentally that extract demonstrates anticonvuls

Superior Damage Tolerance of Fish Skins.

Skin is the largest organ of many animals. Its protective function against hostile environments and predatorial attack makes high mechanical strength a vital characteristic. Here, we measured the mechanical properties of bass fish skins and found that fish skins are highly ductile with a rupture strain of up to 30-40% and a rupture strength of 10-15 MPa. The fish skins exhibit a strain-stiffening behavior. Stretching can effectively eliminate the stress concentrations near the pre-existing holes and edge notches, suggesting that the skins are highly damage tolerant. Our measurement determined

Direct and Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation for Treatment of Tinnitus: A Scoping Review.

Recent animal research has shown that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) paired with sound stimuli can induce neural plasticity in the auditory cortex in a controlled manner. VNS paired with tones excluding the tinnitus frequency eliminated physiological and behavioral characteristics of tinnitus in noise-exposed rats. Several clinical trials followed and explored the effectiveness of VNS paired with sound stimuli for alleviating tinnitus in human subjects. Transcutaneous VNS (tVNS) has received increasing attention as a non-invasive alternative approach to tinnitus treatment. Several studies have
