Cases of neglect in dogs are among the forensic cases submitted most commonly for postmortem examination. Starvation is a form of primary protein-energy malnutrition in which the availability of food is severely restricted or absent; cachexia is a form of protein-energy malnutrition secondary to progressive metabolic derangement during chronic diseases. Despite both conditions leading to an emaciated appearance of the cadaver, discrimination between the two is crucial in forensic cases. We hypothesized that among emaciated dogs, the degree of liver atrophy in starved animals is higher than in

Osteoporosis is one of chief complications of anorexia nervosa. Their calcium intake decreases and 84%are lack of vitamin D. The abnormal bone metabolism in severely emaciated patients with anorexia nervosa involves both a reduction in bone formation and an increase in bone resorption. The annual change in lumbar bone mineral density(BMD)is significantly correlated with body mass index(BMI)at the entry. The critical BMI for a positive increase in BMD was 16.4±0.3 kg/m2. Since 30%of patients are lack of vitamin K, their bone quality deteriorates. The risk factors of a decrease in lumbar vertebr

We describe the pathologic changes of single or simultaneous dietary deprivations of biotin (B) and pantothenic acid (PA) in lake trout, Salvelinus namaycush. A deficiency of PA produced gross signs of anorexia, inanition, emaciation, gill abnormalities and high mortality. In B-deficient fish, growth retardation reached statistically significant levels (P less than 0.05) after week 10, but gill and liver lesions were observed earlier. Anorexia and reduced weight gain were observed earlier in fish deprived of both nutrients than in those deficient in B alone. All B-deficient trout fed PA surviv

A patient with mild learning disability and paranoid schizophrenia developed catatonia. The marked emaciation associated with catatonia resulted in intestinal obstruction secondary to sigmoid volvulus. The patient's mental and physical health continued to deteriorate despite maximal treatment with medication, and therefore, electroconvulsive therapy was initiated. Electroconvulsive therapy resulted in improvement in catatonia; this was also associated with concurrent relief of the intestinal obstruction. This report highlights volvulus of the sigmoid colon as an unusual complication of cataton

Chronic alimentary fluorine deficiency was provoked in goats by a semisynthetic diet with fruorine deficiency (less than 0.3 mg/kg dry feed). Teeth caries, emaciation in spite of higher consumption of food as compared to controls, focal inflammatory degenerative changes in the alimentary tract mucous membranes (catarrhal-purulent esophagitis, chronic duodenitis), chronic degenerative changes in the parenchymatous organs were observed. Endocrinopathies, accidental thymus involution, hypothyroid state, destructive changes in the pancreatic insullar cells were also common.

A 63 year-old woman with a malignant duodenocolic fistula of colonic origin was so diagnosed following radiological examination. She had symptoms of feculant vomitus, persistent diarrhea and emaciation. Following preoperative treatment of the nutritional and electrolyte disorders with intravenous hyperalimentation, a one-staged right hemicolectomy and pancreatoduodenectomy was performed successfully. We emphasized that an en-bloc removal of all the possibly involved structures is the most successful procedure for malignant duodenocolic fistula of colonic origin.

Six Indonesian buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) were inoculated intravenously with 10(5) Trypanosoma evansi, examined clinically, haematologically and serologically, and then killed 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 or 12 weeks after infection for detailed pathological study. Relapsing fever was related to the waves of parasitaemia and fluctuations of pulse and respiration rates. Anaemic mucous membranes, depression, weakness, refusal to walk, loss of appetite and emaciation were seen. Body weight, packed cell volume, total platelet and red cell counts, and haemoglobin values were below those of two uninfected control

BACKGROUND: Paratuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), is a chronic granulomatous enteritis that affects domestic and wild ruminants and camelids. The disease has rarely been reported in alpacas in Germany. This publication describes epidemiologically independent cases of paratuberculosis in two alpacas in Germany.
CASE PRESENTATION: Two alpacas, a 26-year-old female zoo animal (case 1) and a 2.5-year-old breeding stallion from a private owner (case 2), presented with progressive emaciation, leading to death (case 2) or euthanasia (case 1) because of de

The author has analyzed the data of 163 patients operated because of their duodenal ulcer disease. There were in existence 30% of the first degree, 53% of the second degree and 17% of third degree emaciated patients. The author developed a new scheme of the enteral feeding. This new scheme proved to be effective based on the analysis of biochemical indices in patients at the early postopeartive period.

Semax and mexidol significantly increase the survival of white mongrel male mice upon bilateral ligation of common carotid arteries. Semax virtually completely prevented retrograde amnesia development in ligated mice under conditions of a complex extremal action (emaciating swim in cold water with simultaneous wheel rotation) and increased the lifetime of these animals in altitude test chamber.

A buffalo disease, called "Degnala", causing lameness, edema, gangrenous ulceration of hooves or tail, emaciation, recumbency and eventual death, occurs in Eastern Nepal. Clinical examinations manifested lice eggs on hairs, bradycardia, hypothermia, dehydration, exanthema and icterus. Hematologically, increase of band neutrophil, giant platelet, hypoalbuminemia and hyperglobulinemia were characteristics. Microscopically, dark blue tiny particles were seen on red blood cell (RBC) after Giemsa staining. Administration of tetracycline at an early stage of the disease was effective.

We report the case of an adolescent female, previously nonobese, belonging to educated average socioeconomic Muslim family. She stopped taking food, developed a perception of distorted body image with occasional episodes of binge eating and forced vomiting. She became amenorrheic and emaciated with loss of secondary sexual characters. She satisfied the criteria for anorexia nervosa with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The author observed 477 patients with sub- and decompensated stenosis of the pylorus of ulcer etiology; 11 out of them developed a severe complication--chloroprivic tetany which resulted from repeated abundant vomiting in emaciated patients and was followed by an acute total dehydration of the body, decrease of chlorides, oliguria and azotemia. Some problems concerning the prevention and the treatment of this severe complication of peptic ulcer are described.

The common guillemots, Uria aalge, found stranded at the Belgian coast, display high levels of Cu in both liver and kidneys. The condition index of the animals, defined as the ratio of liver to kidneys mass (Wenzel & Adelung, 1996, The suitability of oiled Guillemots (Uria aalge) as monitoring organisms for geographical comparisons of trace element contaminants. Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 31, 368-377), influences both the metal concentration and its binding to metallothioneins (MT): the lower the condition index, the more emaciated the animals, and the higher the t

We report a rare case of pilocytic astrocytoma and diencephalic syndrome occurring together in a 30-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF-1). Diencephalic syndrome included emaciation and somnolence. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging revealed a brain tumor in the optic chiasmal-hypothalamic region, which invaded the thalamus, brain stem and cerebellum. A biopsy specimen from the chiasmal tumor was compatible with pilocytic astrocytoma. Although she received radiation therapy, she died 22 months after the onset of the disease.

We report a patient having a non-diagnosed small cell lung cancer, presenting with a clinical picture comprising emaciation, hepatomegaly, progressive jaundice, bilirubinuria and clay-colored stools. Computed tomography showed intrahepatic and extrahepatic biliary duct dilatation. The cause was compression of the common bile duct by metastatic enlarged lymph nodes in the porta hepatis. Clinical suspicion arose because of a mass found on the chest X-ray film and a positive cytologic sputum examination. The definitive diagnosis was obtained by bronchoscopy and biopsy.

A weak and emaciated California sea otter (Enhydra lutris) was found stranded on Atascadero Beach in Morro Bay, California. It died three weeks after capture. A diagnosis of coccidioidomycosis was confirmed by histology, serology and culture. This is believed to be the first reported case of this disease from the Morro Bay area of San Luis Obispo County, California as well as the first reported case in a free-ranging marine mammal.

BACKGROUND: Populations of unowned unsocialised cats are present worldwide. Generally, there is concern about their welfare. Low body condition score (BCS) is a potentially relevant indicator that is relatively easy to assess: emaciated cats are likely to have welfare problems while thin cats may be at risk of becoming emaciated. The objective of this study was to assess the association of low BSC with a selection of factors relating to the host, disease, and infection in unowned unsocialised domestic cats. We necropsied 598 euthanised unowned unsocialised cats from Denmark. We recorded each c
