COVID-19 Pandemic: Analysis of Health Effects on Emergency Service Nursing Workers via a Qualitative Approach.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, longstanding issues involving nursing work, which has always involved significant risks of illness and infection, were intensified. It is necessary to acknowledge the risks and nurses' perceptions about the risks qualitatively during the period of the health crisis. The aim of this study was to examine the health repercussions perceived by nursing workers in emergency services during the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. This was a qualitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study. The settings of the study were emergency services with a national scope; t

Medication Safety During Transitions of Care From Paramedicine to Emergency Nursing Care: A Scoping Review Protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Transitions of care in the emergency department are critical points for patient safety, particularly during handovers from emergency medical services (EMS) personnel to emergency department clinicians. This rapid and high-pressure environment often prioritizes urgent clinical care over structured communication, increasing the risk of information loss and medication errors, which can lead to serious patient harm, prolonged hospital stays, preventable complications, and death. OBJECTIVE: To systematically map academic and gray literature examining medication-related safety risks d

Characteristics and comorbidity of drug and alcohol-related emergency department presentations detected by nursing triage text.

INTRODUCTION: This study used nursing triage text to detect drug- and alcohol-related emergency department (ED) presentations and describe their patient and service delivery characteristics. METHODS: Data were reviewed for all ED presentations from 2004 to 2006 (n = 263 937) from two hospitals in Sydney, Australia. Each record included two nursing triage free-text fields, which were searched for more than 100 drug-related and more than 60 alcohol-related terms. Adjusted odds ratios were used to compare the characteristics of drug and alcohol-related ED presentations with all other ED presenta

Adolescents accessing emergency contraception in the A&E department - a feminist analysis of the nursing experience.

This paper outlines the findings and discussion of a qualitative research study that focused on the experiences of seven qualified nurses working in three Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments in the North West of England. It was exploratory in nature, aiming to describe and explain the nurses' encounters with adolescents accessing emergency contraception (EC) in A&E. The study was carried out using a feminist methodology and a grounded theory method. The findings indicated that accident and emergency is a contradictory location for access to EC for adolescents, where the 'promise' of easy,

Secondary traumatic stress in emergency room nurses: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency room nurses care for patients during the worst times in their lives: motor vehicle accidents, violence, rape, trauma, death, etc. Continuous exposure puts nurses at risk for secondary traumatic stress (STS): the negative emotional, psychological, and/or physical reaction experienced by someone who had an indirect exposure to trauma. This can impair a nurse's ability to cope, increase levels of anxiety/depression, and intention to leave the profession. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional design, 169 nurses completed a survey between February - June 2023. Data were collecte

Adherence to peripheral venous catheters' guidelines by emergency nurses: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral intravenous catheters are widely used in emergency departments for intravenous treatment. However, peripheral intravenous catheter practices supported by the latest evidence remain suboptimal, negatively affecting patient outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To identify the determinants influencing adherence to peripheral intravenous catheter guidelines in the emergency department (the insertion technique, maintenance protocols, and timely removal) and to analyse strategies for improving adherence. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted from August to September 2025, in the Cochra

The Impact of Emergency Department Geriatric Nurse Practitioners on Patient Length of Stay.

INTRODUCTION: Limited research exists that examines the impact of geriatric-focused nurse practitioners practicing within United States emergency departments on the reduction of inpatient admission length of stay for older patients. Our study aimed to assess the efficacy of geriatric-focused nurse practitioners' integration into an emergency department setting and the subsequent effect on the length of stay of inpatient hospital admissions. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of medical records for patients aged ≥65 years

Experiences of rural nurses with emergency patient transport in a resource limited setting.

BACKGROUND: Registered nurses are primary care providers during most patient transfers from rural areas. Various local conditions and circumstances impact the provision of nursing care prior to and during transportation. These include clinic staffing, uneven access to functioning equipment and other necessary infrastructure across settings, the wide-ranging clinical need for specialty care, and complex social and interpersonal circumstances that play a role in care-seeking and transport decision-making. This study explored the experiences of nurses with emergency patient transport in rural hea

From Nursery to Nursing Home: Emerging Concepts in Clostridioides difficile Pathogenesis.

Clostridioides difficile is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, anaerobic bacterium that infects the human gastrointestinal tract, causing a wide range of disorders that vary in severity from mild diarrhea to toxic megacolon and/or death. Over the past decade, incidence, severity, and costs associated with C. difficile infection (CDI) have increased dramatically in both the pediatric and adult populations. The factors driving this rapidly evolving epidemiology remain largely unknown but are likely due in part to previously unappreciated host, microbiota, and environmental factors. In this review,
