Growing frequency of neurocysticercosis in Madrid (Spain).

The aim of this study is to report on the growing frequency of neurocysticercosis (NCC) in Madrid (Spain) related to changes in migratory flows. We investigated the origin of 20 patients with NCC seen over a period of 13-years (1990- 2002). Patients age and disease activity were compared with a second group of 13 patients observed in the same hospital in 1980-1989. Eighty per cent of the patients observed in the first group were foreign immigrants, all but one from South-American countries. They were young (mean age: 31.4 +- 7.7 years) and most had evidence of active disease. In contrast, only

Well-being and contexts of development of U.S. citizen children in Mexico following parental deportation or voluntary relocation.

When undocumented immigrant parents are deported from the United States, they must decide whether or not to take their U.S.-born and undocumented immigrant children with them, often to countries the children have never visited or know little about. Other parents do not wait to be deported by the government and decide to relocate to their home countries with or without their children. Both sets of families experience relocation but under different circumstances. These differences deserve exploration to understand the psychological and emotional effects on children's well-being. In this cross-se

The Migration of Lynch Victims' Families, 1880-1930.

We examine the relationship between the lynching of African Americans in the southern United States and subsequent county out-migration of the victims' surviving family members. Using U.S. census records and machine learning methods, we identify the place of residence for family members of Black individuals who were killed by lynch mobs between 1882 and 1929 in the U.S. South. Over the entire period, our analysis finds that lynch victims' family members experienced a 10-percentage-point increase in the probability of migrating to a different county by the next decennial census relative to thei

Demographic, epidemiological, and clinical variables were analyzed. RESULTS: the proportion of immigrants was higher in CHB than in CHC (38.8 % vs 5.6 %; p < 0.001), as well as among incident cases compared to prevalent ones

Migration and infectious diseases.

BACKGROUND: Infectious diseases still represent an important cause of morbidity and mortality among foreign-born individuals. The rising migration flows towards Europe throughout the last few years are raising renewed concerns about management issues and the potential associated risk for the native population. AIMS: To discuss the health implications and challenges related to the four phases of migration, from first arrival to stable resettlement. SOURCES: Scientific literature and relevant statistical reports. CONTENT: Although infectious diseases are not a health priority at first arrival

International Population Study in Spain, Cuba, and the United States of Attitudes Toward Organ Donation Among the Cuban Population.

Cuban immigrants constitute an important group in both the United States and Spain, with different behaviors toward organ donation having been described among the different Latin American nationalities. We analyzed the attitude toward organ donation among the Cuban populations in Cuba, Spain, and Florida. The study population was Cuban immigrants over 15 years of age residing in Cuba, Spain, and Florida, with samples randomly stratified by age and sex. A validated questionnaire on psychosocial aspects of organ donation (PCID-DTO Rios) was used. Census was used as the sampling base in all 3 cou

Concerns about the deportation of friends or family members shape U.S.-born Latines' feelings about U.S. immigration policy with implications for collective action for immigrants' rights.

OBJECTIVES: As citizens by birth, U.S.-born Latines are not subject to deportation. However, many have undocumented friends or family members who are. We examined whether concerns about the deportation of friends or family members shape U.S.-born Latines' feelings of anger and fear about U.S. immigration policy as well as identity conflict, variables associated with collective action for immigrants' rights. METHOD: After establishing the effectiveness of our experimental manipulation in a pilot study (N = 378), we randomly assigned a national sample of U.S.-born Mexican and Central Americans

Differences in Incidence of Acute Viral Hepatitis between Foreigners and Autochthonous Population in Italy.

BACKGROUND: In European countries, the prevalence of HBV and HCV in refugees and migrants tends to reflect the prevalence in their countries of origin. The aim of this study is to analyse acute viral hepatitis cases diagnosed in Italy among foreign citizens and to compare incidence rates in foreigners and Italians. METHODS: We analysed the cases of each viral hepatitis type among foreigners. Standardised incidence rates were compared between natives and foreigners. RESULTS: Between 2004 and 2019, 15,872 cases of acute viral hepatitis were notified by 10 Italian regions, 14.8% among foreign c

Prevalence rates of six selected infectious diseases among African migrants and refugees: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The objective of this paper was to systematically review the literature on the prevalence of selected infectious diseases among migrants/refugees of African origin and to provide policy makers and health care professionals with evidence-based information. We pursued a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of six selected infectious diseases (i.e., syphilis, helminthiasis, schistosomiasis, intestinal protozoa infections, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C) among migrants/refugees of African origin. Three electronic databases (i.e., PubMed, EMBASE, and ISI Web of Science) wer

Asymptomatic Giant Intraventricular Cysticercosis: A Case Report.

Neurocysticercosis is a growing health problem in the United States and worldwide. Diagnosis and treatment is challenging especially if the physician is not familiar with this condition. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that neurocysticercosis affects 50 million people worldwide, especially in developing countries and causes approximately 50,000 deaths annually.1 Neurocysticercosis is of emerging importance in the United States especially in Hawai'i because of immigration from disease-endemic regions.2 We present a case of a young Chinese immigrant male who presented with impressi

Migration-related detention centers: the challenges of an ecological perspective with a focus on justice.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, border control and migration-related detention have become increasingly widespread practices affecting the lives of undocumented migrants, their families, and communities at large. In spite of the concern within academia, few studies have directly witnessed the life and experiences of people confined to migration-related detention centers. In the medical and psychological fields, a considerable body of research has demonstrated the pathogenic nature of detention in terms of mental health, showing an association between length of detention and severity of distress.

[Rubella: a new scenario for an old disease].

World Health Organization has the target by the year 2010 of reducing congenital rubella syndrome to less than 1/100,000 live births, being necessary the control of the virus circulation. Rubella is currently a low-incidence disease, that affected to children in the pre-vaccine era. The excellent measles-mumps-rubella vaccine coverage in children, together with the vaccination campaigns in childbearing age women, leads to get very high protection. Until recently, susceptible individuals were grouped in a reduced fraction of young men, born after the decline of wild virus circulation and that d
