PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to show that the differences among eating behaviours are related to the emotional dysregulation connected to the mental dimensions being part of the obese psychopathology. Eating behaviours can be considered a diagnostic feature at the initial screening for determining the obesity treatment: nutritional or bariatric surgery.
METHODS: 1828 Obese subjects underwent psychiatric assessment before entering obesity nutritional treatment or bariatric surgery following the multidisciplinary programme. 1121 subjects were selected and enrolled in this study: 850 were i

Spiritual interventions are rarely used in contemporary treatment programs and little empirical evidence is available concerning their effectiveness. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a spiritual group intervention for eating disorder inpatients. We compared the effectiveness of a Spirituality group with Cognitive and Emotional Support groups using a randomized, control group design. Participants were 122 women receiving inpatient eating disorder treatment. Patients in the Spirituality group tended to score significantly lower on psychological disturbance an

Emotional eating is critical in the development and maintenance of obesity among children and adolescents. While attachment's influence on emotional eating is increasingly recognised, little is known about how emotion regulation strategies mediate this, particularly in samples with obesity. This study examined how attachment dimensions affect emotional eating through different emotion regulation strategies in youths with obesity. 772 children and adolescents (ages 7-19) with obesity participated. Key variables were measured using validated questionnaires. Mediation effects were analysed throug

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including abuse and neglect, have been associated with difficulties in developing empathy. People with eating disorders (EDs) often report higher rates of ACE and display empathy-related impairments, which may contribute to maladaptive interpersonal functioning.
OBJECTIVE: This study explored the associations between childhood adversities and empathy-related outcomes in individuals with ED compared to a general population sample (GP).
PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants included 210 people with EDs (94 anorexia nervosa restrictive, 34 bing

Emotional overeating is a process that is particularly relevant to people within the binge spectrum of eating disorders. Approximately a third of people with overweight share this phenotype. In addition, this behaviour may occur in neurodevelopmental disorders (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)) and other psychiatric disorders. The biopsychosocial underpinnings of emotional eating include a genetic vulnerability to a higher weight and various cognitive and emotional traits. The environment also plays a key role. For example, the commodification of food and beauty and exposure to

OBJECTIVE: Conventional weight-loss programs that induce a calorie deficit mostly fail in long-term weight reduction and disadvantageous eating styles often remain unchanged. Mindfulness interventions therefore redirect the focus away from the weight-loss goal and toward the process of eating itself. By eating more mindfully, at a slower pace, and with an enhanced focus on bodily sensations, participants might not only indirectly reduce their daily calorie intake but also eat less craving and stress driven.
METHOD: This study randomized participants to either intervention (n = 23) or waitlist

Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is proposed to be a transdiagnostic vulnerability factor for various emotional disorders. There is robust evidence for the role of IU in anxiety and depressive disorders, but a paucity of evidence in eating disorders (ED). This study evaluated the factorial validity, internal consistency, and convergent validity of the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale-Short Form (IUS-12; Carleton, Norton, & Asmundson, 2007), and examined whether IU is associated with ED pathology and comorbid emotional symptoms, in a clinical sample with EDs (N=134). A unitary factor solution pr

OBJECTIVES: Females are more likely to develop an eating disorder (ED) than males. Studies of affected men may therefore inform models of risk and resilience to EDs. The aim of this study was to examine putative neurocognitive intermediate phenotypes of EDs in affected males.
METHODS: Cognitive flexibility, central coherence (global/detail processing), complex emotion recognition and social-threat sensitivity were investigated in men with EDs and healthy men. Measures of distress, perfectionism, and obsessive compulsivity were collected.
RESULTS: Men with EDs were more cognitively inflexible

PURPOSE: Understanding how early adaptive schemas, cognitive flexibility, and emotional regulation influence eating disorder (ED) symptoms, and whether this differs across diagnostic subtypes is critical to optimising treatment. The current study investigated the relationship between these variables and ED symptomology in individuals self-reporting an ED diagnosis and healthy controls.
METHODS: A dataset of 1576 online survey responses yielded subsamples for anorexia nervosa (n = 155), bulimia nervosa (n = 55), binge eating disorder (n = 33), other specified feeding or eating disorder (n = 93

It is widely acknowledged that obesity is a growing public clinical issue involving both physical and psychological well-being. Nevertheless, the relationship between psychological features and weight gain is still unclear. Although emotional eating (EE) and personality traits are considered significant predictors of eating disorders, their role in obesity without eating disorders (OB-wed) is far from proven. The present study aimed at investigating the cumulative effect of EE and personality traits on overeating behavior in a sample of 266 university students (169 female; mean age = 21.85, SD

Eating disorders and difficulties in regulating emotions are frequent among adolescents and serve as risk factors for several health issues. Nonetheless, the relationship remains ambiguous; investigating this connection will not only elucidate the associations between the two illnesses. Nevertheless, it will offer theoretical backing for interventions targeting the pertinent illnesses. This study seeks to examine the relationship between emotion management and disordered eating while assessing the moderating influences of Body Mass Index (BMI) and gender to enhance future interventions for eat

Introduction: The association of chronic diseases with eating disorders requires increased attention due to the potential for serious complications and increased risk of mortality. Eating disorders and sub-clinical eating disorders are associated with maladaptive emotion regulation, which may be both triggers and maintaining factors of the disease. To our knowledge, the role of cognitive emotion regulation in eating disorders in adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease and type 1 diabetes mellitus has not been investigated to date. Objective: We analysed the relationship between cognitive e

BACKGROUND: Emotional eating (EE) is not a separate eating disorder, but rather a type of behavior within a group of various eating behaviors that are influenced by habits, stress, emotions, and individual attitudes toward eating. The relationship between eating and emotions can be considered on two parallel levels: psychological and physiological. In the case of the psychological response, stress generates a variety of bodily responses relating to coping with stress.
OBJECTIVE: Therefore, the main objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the prevalence of emotional eating in group

Emotion regulation appears to play a key role in eating disorders. However, prior attempts to associate specific emotion regulation abilities with specific types of eating disorders resulted in inconsistent findings. Moreover, far less is known about emotion regulation in eating disorders during adolescence, a critical period of emotional development. The current study addresses this gap, comparing emotion regulation characteristics between adolescents with restrictive types of eating disorders and those with binge eating or purging types of eating disorders. Ninety-eight adolescents with eati

Emotional reactivity is theorized to contribute to both eating disorders (ED) and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). Although EDs and NSSI frequently co-occur, no study has examined emotional reactivity in individuals with both conditions. This study examined the following hypotheses in a large clinical sample (N = 648): (1) patients with co-occurring ED and NSSI would report higher emotional reactivity and more severe clinical characteristics; (2) among those with EDs, patients with bulimia nervosa (BN) would be more likely to report NSSI and evidence higher emotional reactivity compared to thos

Binge eating has a high prevalence among bariatric patients and is associated with post-surgical weight gain. This study examined the potential mediating role of emotion regulation difficulties in the relation between attachment insecurity and binge eating among this population. Participants were 1388 adult pre-bariatric surgery candidates from an accredited bariatric surgery assessment centre in Toronto, Ontario. Participants completed measures of psychological functioning, including attachment style and emotion regulation. Mediation analyses revealed that difficulties with emotion regulation

The aim of this study was to verify the level of expressed emotion (EE) as perceived from patients with an eating disorder (ED). The Italian translation of the Level of Expressed Emotion Scale was administered to 63 female patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder and 63 control subjects, according to a case-control procedure. Patients with ED showed higher level of perceived EE than controls, whereas no significant differences were observed when comparing the 3 patient subgroup

The aim of this study was to assess the usefulness of virtual environments representing situations that are emotionally significant to subjects with eating disorders (ED). These environments may be applied with both evaluative and therapeutic aims and in simulation procedures to carry out a range of experimental studies. This paper is part of a wider research project analyzing the influence of the situation to which subjects are exposed on their performance on body image estimation tasks. Thirty female patients with eating disorders were exposed to six virtual environments: a living-room (neut

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: The health behaviours of professional drivers, including eating habits, directly affect their health, cognitive function, and consequently, road safety. Emotional eating, i.e., the consumption of food in response to stress and emotions, poses a particular threat to this occupational group. However, despite the growing interest in drivers' health, comparative analyses between different groups of drivers in terms of eating behaviour remain scarce. Therefore, this study analyses differences in eating behaviour between urban and long-distance bus drivers and the impact
