Microsporidiosis and Cryptosporidiosis in HIV/AIDS Patients in St. Petersburg, Russia: Serological identification of microsporidia and Cryptosporidium parvum in sera samples from HIV/AIDS patients.

To determine seroprevalence of the opportunistic organisms Cryptosporidium parvum and microsporidia (Encephalitozoon cuniculi, E. intestinalis, E. hellem, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi) in Russian HIV/AIDS patients, we evaluated 46 sera from HIV/AIDS patients from the S.P. Botkin Clinical Infectious Diseases Hospital, St. Petersburg, Russia. Five (10.9%) sera were seropositive for E. cuniculi and 19 (41.3%) were positive for C. parvum by ELISA. By IFAT, 6 (13.0%) sera were seropositive for E. bieneusi, 4 (8.7%) for E. intestinalis, and 9 (19.6%) for E. hellem. This study is the first report to e

Nosema parkeri sp. n., a microsporidan from the argasid tick, Ornithodoros parkeri Cooley.

Nosema parkeri sp. n. is described from nymphs and adults of the argasid tick, Ornithodoros parkeri Cooley, from a laboratory colony. Schizogonic and sporogonic stages are described from various tick tissues. Spores are binucleate, measuring 3.2 (3-4) x 1.9 (1.8-2.5) micronm. Transmission is transovarial and transstadial. The parasite does not appear to affect adversely the development or reproduction of the tick. Dermacentor andersoni Stiles was experimentally infected. Attempts to infect Swiss mice by tick feeding or by injection of infected tick suspensions were unsuccessful. The microspori

Nosematosis of the cornea. Case report, including electron microscopic studies.

A 26-year-old woman underwent enucleation of a blind, painful eye because of a perforated corneal ulcer. Histopathologic examination of the eye disclosed an acute, necrotizing keratitis surrounding myriad small (2.5 to 3 x 4.5 to 5 micrometer), oval, faintly visible structures. Under polarized light, they were partially birefringent and stained intensely positive with the acid-fast technique. The organisms were located mainly within the cytoplasm of histiocytes in the deep corneal lamellae. They were interpreted as a protozoa of the genus Nosema. The diagnosis was confirmed by electron microsc

Encephalitozoonosis in 2 South American Fur Seal (Arctocephalus australis) Pups.

Cerebral and disseminated encephalitozoonosis was diagnosed by histopathology, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemistry in 2 free-ranging South American fur seal pups found dead at Guafo Island (43°33'S 74°49'W) in southern Chile. In the brain, lesions were characterized by random foci of necrosis with large numbers of macrophages containing numerous microsporidial organisms within parasitophorous vacuoles. In addition, occasional histiocytes loaded with numerous mature and immature microsporidia spores consistent with Encephalitozoon sp were observed in pulmonary alveolar septa, splenic

Triple infection with agamid adenovirus 1, Encephaliton cuniculi-like microsporidium and enteric coccidia in a bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps).

A 2-month-old juvenile central bearded dragon was presented for anorexia and cachexia. Another specimen from the same cage had died suddenly 2 weeks prior. Fecal analysis revealed a high quantity of Isospora amphiboluri and a few pinworm eggs. Other examinations were not performed and the animal died a few days later despite supportive care. A third individual from the same cage presented with anorexia and a distended cœlom and was euthanized. In this third dragon, histological examination revealed intestinal coccidiosis, basophilic intranuclear inclusions compatible with adenovirus infection,

The Warthin-Starry stain in the diagnosis of small intestinal microsporidiosis in HIV-infected patients.

A protocol for the handling of small intestinal biopsies from HIV-infected patients is presented. This protocol includes the Warthin-Starry stain for the detection of microsporidia. This stain has proved a reliable and sensitive diagnostic technique for microsporidial infections as it stains both Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Septata intestinalis in duodenal enterocytes. Because the stain demonstrates Septata intestinalis in lamina propria macrophages as well as enterocytes, it allows for the practical differentiation of these two microsporidial infections. The Warthin-Starry stain has also demo

Brain and spinal cord lesions in encephalitozoonosis in mink.

Central nervous system lesions were studied by light microscopy in 43 farmed mink, aged 5 months to 2 1/2 years, with spontaneous encephalitozoonosis and showing cataractous eye changes. Lesions were found in the brain and spinal cord of all animals examined but were generally mild and chronic. The lesions were consistent with those previously described in spontaneous encephalitozoonosis in other carnivores. Parasites in parasitophorous vacuoles and free or phagocytosed in necrotic and granulomatous lesions were demonstrated in animals aged 5 months to 1 year. The occurrence of arterial lesion

Brain and spinal cord lesions in encephalitozoonosis in the blue fox.

The central nervous system lesions in encephalitozoonosis were studied in 11 naturally infected blue foxes. Immunohistochemical staining was employed in the demonstration of the parasites and identification of host cells. Consistent findings in acute to subacute stages included granulomatous meningoencephalomyelitis and vasculitis, with arterial lesions similar to polyarteritis nodosa. Chronic stages were dominated by arteriosclerosis, perivascular mononuclear infiltrations and gliosis, with less prominent granulomatous reaction. Parasites were almost constantly observed in association with ac

Necrotizing encephalitis of unknown cause in Fennoscandian Arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus).

A neurologic disease affected a colony of endangered Fennoscandian arctic foxes (Alopex lagopus) kept in captivity for breeding purposes. Several outbreaks of disease occurred between 1994 and 2004. The clinical signs included ataxia, indications of anosmia, blindness, and abnormal behavior. The disease was characterized by severe necrotizing encephalitis affecting mostly the cranial cerebrum, basal ganglia, and olfactory bulbs. Investigations to identify the etiology of the disease included testing for several infectious agents known to cause encephalitis in carnivores. Tests for Toxoplasma g

[Microsporidia and cryptosporidia coinfection in an HIV-infected newborn].

Microsporidiosis and cryptosporidiosis are emerging opportunistic infections responsible for intestinal manifestations that are often severe in immunocompromised patients. A case of microsporidiosis-cryptosporidiosis coinfection is reported in an HIV-infected newborn. The patient was a 17-day-old female, exclusively breastfed and with no contact with animals. Microsporidiosis and cryptosporidiosis were diagnosed after systematic screening in stool samples using both specific staining and PCR. Two species of microsporidia, Encephalitozoon intestinalis and Enterocytozoon bieneusi, and Cryptospor

Microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

We describe three patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome who presented with a bilateral coarse superficial epithelial keratitis due to infection with the protozoal parasite Microspora, Encephalitozoon cuniculi. Despite the extent of the corneal surface disease, conjunctival inflammation was minimal. Visual acuity ranged from 20/20 to 20/200. In one patient, the keratitis was complicated by the development of a surface defect with secondary Pseudomonas species infection. All patients had a history of exposure to household pets. Standard cultures were negative. Diagnosis was establishe

Intraocular Chondrosarcoma in a Rabbit.

Post-traumatic intraocular sarcomas are rarely reported in domestic animals and are most common in cats. An 8-year-old rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was referred to a veterinary clinic due to ocular discharge, uveitis and protein precipitate in the anterior chamber of the right eye. The eye was enucleated and histopathological examination revealed a poorly demarcated tumour within the ciliary body with invasion to adjacent eye structures. Neoplastic cells formed chaotic cartilage lacunae and were immunopositive for vimentin but immunonegative for pancytokeratin. On this basis, the neoplasm wa

Protozoa in respiratory pathology: a review.

Among the micro-organisms that may affect the respiratory apparatus are the protozoa. The diseases they may give rise to constitute a relatively uncommon group of respiratory ailments with, in the majority of cases, an underlying clinical situation corresponding to states of suppressed immunity (AIDS, transplants, malign haemopathies, corticotherapy, etc.). Other factors, such as visits to endemic areas and immigration, also have to be taken into account. In view of the probable increase in the number of cases and the appearance of new emerging diseases, it is the intention of the present work

Head tilt in rabbits caused by pasteurellosis and encephalitozoonosis.

Rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) of non-dwarf (Group A) and dwarf (Group B) strains showing a common clinical sign of head tilt (torticollis) were examined. With 1 exception, all rabbits of group A had otitis and empyema of either one or both middle ears. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from pus and from the nose of all but 1 of these rabbits, and on occasion was also isolated from the brain. By contrast in all dwarf rabbits the presence of the protozoan Encephalitozoon cuniculi was confirmed both histologically and serologically. This parasite did not affect the ears of the animals but rath

Bilateral microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis in an orthokeratology lens wearer: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis is a rare but serious ocular infection that can occur in contact lens wearers, particularly in individuals exposed to certain environmental or behavioral risk factors. Early and accurate diagnosis is crucial to ensure effective treatment and prevent long-term complications. This report presents a case of bilateral microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis in a pediatric patient who wore orthokeratology lenses, accompanied by a review of relevant literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 9-year-old female presented with bilateral eye redness and a persistent fo

[Microsporidioses].

Microsporidia are worldwide ubiquitous intracellular protozoan parasites infecting most major groups of the animal kingdom. In humans, microsporidiosis has recently emerged as a significant cause of morbidity in immunocompromised patients, and particularly in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Parasites of the genus Encephalitozoon cause keratoconjunctivitis and disseminated infections. In 15 to 30% of patients with advanced stage AIDS, Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the causative agent of major chronic diarrhoea. Clinical manifestations include numerous (2 to 8) and abundant

[Pathogenesis of an infection induced in Syrian hamsters by attenuated strains of viruses of the tick-borne encephalitis complex].

The results of virological and morphological study of the pathogenesis of the infection induced by viruses of the tick-borne encephalitis complex (attenuated TP-21 and E-30 strains) in Syrian hamsters with normal and suppressed immune response are presented. The data obtained indicate long-term persistence of the virus-specific antigen: sufficiently high titres of specific antibodies in the blood serum of the animals at late periods after virus inoculation, positive immunoenzyme tests for virus antigen in the meninges of the hamsters inoculated with the TP-21 strain. Features of the pathogenes

A case of diffuse bilateral scrotal neurofibroma in a rabbit.

This report details a rare case of diffuse bilateral scrotal neurofibroma complicated by hindlimb paralysis in a rabbit. The animal was evaluated for unusual bilateral scrotal enlargement. After physical examination, ultrasound scan, radiography, computed tomography and laparoscopy, surgical exploration of the scrotum was undertaken. A homogeneous rubbery firm mass was revealed in contact with the subcutaneous tissue expanding to the entire scrotum without involving the testicles. The mass was excised and diagnosed as diffuse scrotal neurofibroma based on histological and immunohistochemical f

Encephalitozoonosis in rabbits.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi is an obligatory intracellular microsporidian parasite that can infect a wide range of mammals, including rodents, rabbits, horses, carnivores and humans, in which the organism is known as an opportunistic pathogen of immunocompromised individuals. Nevertheless, the main host for E. cuniculi is the rabbit and infections usually have a sub-clinical course. However, severe disease is recognised in pet rabbits more frequently within the last years. As the central nervous system, the kidney and the eye are predilection organs for the organism, predominant histopathological
