[Heterotopic tissue in the gastrointestinal tract].

Heterotopia of the gastrointestinal tract is a common finding. This is due to the complex embryogenesis and the relative ease to detect heterotopic tissue during endoscopy. The reason for biopsy is mostly to rule out neoplasms or to define specific causes of inflammation. Heterotopic tissue can occur in any location of the gastrointestinal tract. The most frequent are gastric heterotopia, pancreatic heterotopia, and heterotopia of Brunner's gland. On rare occasions, heterotopic tissue of salivary gland type as well as heterotopias of apocrine glands, thyroid, and prostatic tissue have been des

[Coexistence of bilateral paraganglioma of the A. carotis, thymoma and thyroid adenoma: a chance finding?].

Bilateral carotid body tumors are quite rare neoplasms. The coexistence of bilateral carotid body tumor, thyroid gland adenoma and thymoma has not yet been reported in the literature. We report on a 59-year old male who presented with a bilateral cervical mass. After the standard diagnostic procedures and surgical removal the diagnosis of a carotid body tumor was confirmed. On physical examination, the carotid body tumor is usually palpable as a firm, painless cervical mass. Even though carotid body tumors are slow-growing, and from a histological point of view benign, they sometimes attain ma

Preconception urethane or chromium(III) treatment of male mice: multiple neoplastic and non-neoplastic changes in offspring.

Increase in neoplasia in offspring after preconception exposure of parents presents puzzling features such as high frequency of effects and lack of Mendelian inheritance. The present study examined the hypothesis that preconception carcinogenesis involves an increase in the rate of occurrence of neoplasms with a spontaneous incidence. Male NIH Swiss mice (12 per group) were exposed 2 weeks before mating (once, ip) to urethane (1.5 g/kg) or chromium(III) chloride (1 mmol/kg). Offspring (48-78/sex/group) were examined for all grossly apparent changes when moribund or at natural death, followed b

Reticulin Framework Assessment in Neoplastic Endocrine Pathology.

The reticulin framework, composed mainly of type III collagen, is an essential structural component of biological tissues. Reticulin stains, particularly silver-based methods, enable detailed visualization of reticulin framework alterations, which have been proven to be quick, low-cost, and reliable solutions for highlighting quantitative and qualitative changes of reticulin framework and have been variably associated with neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions. This review provides an updated overview of reticulin stain applications and reticulin framework assessment in endocrine and neuroe

Endocrine late effects of cancer treatment.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine disorders are one of the common late complications of cancer treatment in childhood and adulthood. The incidence is more common in individuals who underwent oncology treatment in childhood in whom the estimated prevalence of these disorders is 20-50%. With improving treatment, there is an increasing number of people with a history of cancer treatment and thus persons who are potentially at risk of developing endocrine disorders. In adults, the prevalence of disorders is lower compared to those who had treatment in their childhood; however, endocrinological complications a

Genotype-negative multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 with prolactinoma, hyperparathyroidism, and subclinical Cushing's syndrome accompanied by hyperglycemia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder, accompanied by multiple endocrine neoplasms of the parathyroid, pancreas, pituitary, and other neoplasms in the adrenal glands. However, in some cases, patients clinically diagnosed with MEN1 may be genotype-negative. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old female was diagnosed with MEN1 based on a macroprolactinoma (19 mm in diameter), primary hyperparathyroidism, and a cortisol-producing adrenal adenoma, without a family history. At first appearance, she had a hemoglobin A1c of 12.0% and a fasting plasma

[Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1: genetic study of a large family].

Multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 1 (MEN-1) is an inherited disorder characterised by the predisposition of the cells from parathyroid glands, endocrine pancreas and adenohypophysis to develop neoplasms. We report the genetic study of an extended family with at least 8 affected patients and 10 putative carriers of a mutation in MEN-1 gene. One intragenic (Asp418 GAC-->GAT), and five flanking markers were characterised in the family by PCR amplification and polyachrylamide gel electrophoresis. Association of the disease to MEN-1 gene was confirmed for this family: all the affected memb

Endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma occurring on extra-facial site: a case report.

Cutaneous endocrine mucin-producing sweat gland carcinoma (EMPSGC) is a very rare low-grade malignant neoplasm analogous to the mammary solid-papillary carcinoma. It frequently expresses neuroendocrine markers and may show mucinous differentiation. Although the nodules are circumscribed, myoepithelial cells cannot be showed in most cases and about half of the cases are associated with invasive mucinous carcinoma. Hence, it has been suggested to be invasive and the precursor lesion of some primary cutaneous mucinous carcinomas. After being recognized as a distinct entity, all cases reported to

Effects of xenoestrogen bisphenol A on uterine and pituitary weight, serum prolactin levels and immunoreactive prolactin cells in ovariectomized Wistar rats.

Considerable attention has currently been focused on bisphenol A (BPA), an environmental endocrine disrupting chemical that has oestrogenic activity. In vitro and in vivo short-term assays have shown that BPA is weakly estrogenic. In addition, the issue of species- and strain-differences in susceptibility to BPA was raised. The treatment of ovariectomized (OVX) Wistar rats with BPA at doses of 11-250 mg/kg per day, s.c., for 7 days, resulted in significant dose-dependent regrowth of uterus in uterotrophic assay. Additionally, the stimulation of anterior pituitary gland growth and induction of

An ultrastructural cytochemical stain specific for neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Previous work from our laboratory has indicated that the uranaffin reaction, when run under specific conditions, will stain neurosecretory granules. In this ultrastructural cytochemical study, we analyzed the granule-staining properties of 13 normal, 10 abnormal (non-neoplastic), and 138 neoplastic tissues in an attempt to evaluate the specificity of the uranaffin reaction for diagnostic purposes when compared with routinely processed specimens. For the uranaffin reaction, previously fixed tissue stored in buffer was rinsed with 0.9% NaCl and reacted with a 4% aqueous solution of uranyl acetat

Factors infuencing the sensitivity of ultrasound and gamma location of the parathyroid adenoma.

INTRODUCTION: The treatment of choice for primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) when there is proper preoperative localization of the adenoma is minimally invasive parathyroidectomy. However, imaging techniques are not always able to provide the exact location. The objective is to identify potential factors that might influence the sensitivity and concordance of ultrasound (US) and 99mTc-methoxy-isonitrile parathyroid scintigraphy (MIBI-PS) and the actual location of the adenoma. METHODS: We reviewed the data of patients who underwent parathyroidectomies for PHPT. All patients had undergone ultr

Paediatric thyroid surgery is safe--experiences at a tertiary surgical centre.

PRINCIPLES: Thyroidectomy in children is rare and mostly performed because of thyroid neoplasms. The aim of this study based on prospective data acquisition was to evaluate whether thyroid surgery in children can be performed as safely as in adults when undertaken by a team of adult endocrine surgeons and paediatric surgeons. METHODS: Between 2002 and 2012, 36 patients younger than 18 years underwent surgery for thyroid gland pathologies. All surgical procedures were performed by an experienced endocrine surgeon and a paediatric surgeon. Baseline demographic data, surgical procedure, duration

Parathyroid carcinoma and atypical parathyroid neoplasms in MEN1 patients; A clinico-pathologic challenge. The MD Anderson case series and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN1) is a genetic disorder characterized by usually benign tumors of the parathyroid glands, pancreatic islet cells, and anterior pituitary. Hyperparathyroidism (HPT) occurs in 90% of MEN1 patients. In rare cases, it is associated with parathyroid carcinoma (PC) or atypical parathyroid neoplasm (APN). We present a cohort of 3 such patients. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of our institution's MEN1 database to identify patients who underwent operations for HPT and had a histopathologic diagnosis of PC or APN. Clinical features, gen

[Environment and genetics of endocrine polyoncoses. An aging bull model].

An old bull, it is said by those who know, can have his troubles. Included among these are vertebral osteosclerosis and ankylosing spondylosis--this stiffening up limite, rather than accentuates, the value and reproduction potential of a stud bull past prime. But associated with these abnormalities--and not seen in age-matched cows of comparable breeds--are fascinating endocrine neoplasms that might suggest a pattern that could be productive as a model of human hereditary endocrine abnormalities. Adjacent to the thyroid gland in other vertebrates are ultimobranchial bodies, that are incorporat

Abdominal visceral lesions in von Hippel-Lindau disease: incidence and clinical behavior of pancreatic and adrenal lesions at a single center.

INTRODUCTION: Von Hippel-Lindau disease (VHL) is a dominantly inherited multi-system syndrome. Although pheochromocytoma is the hallmark endocrine neoplasm, pancreatic lesions occur frequently, and their management can be complex. This report describes 26 patients from a single institution with pancreatic or adrenal lesions (or both) in the background of VHL. METHODS: We reviewed records for all patients treated for adrenal (type 2 VHL) or pancreatic manifestations of VHL at our institution from 1990 to 2004. RESULTS: Forty patients with VHL were identified from 24 pedigrees; 26 (65%) had ad

Unusual Dual Brain Tumor Morphologies in an MEN1 Patient: A Case Report of Diagnostic Challenges and Methylation Insights.

Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 1 (MEN1) is an autosomal dominant disorder commonly associated with tumor development in the parathyroid glands, pancreas, and pituitary gland. While pituitary adenomas are frequently observed in MEN1 patients, the presence of additional tumors within the pituitary gland is unusual. Moreover, the co-occurrence of a pituitary adenoma with an atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumor (ATRT) has not been previously documented. ATRT is a rare, aggressive neoplasm predominantly affecting young children and is typically associated with inactivating mutations in the SMARCB1 o

Adrenocortical Adenocarcinoma in a Syrian Golden Hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) With Suspected Hyperadrenocorticism.

Although adrenal gland tumours are among the most common neoplasms in hamsters, few cases have been reported. A 2-year-old intact female pet golden hamster (Mesocricetus auratus) was initially presented with marked non-pruritic alopecia of the hindquarters. Physical examination and ultrasonography revealed a large, unilateral, right-sided abdominal mass measuring 2 cm in diameter. A complete blood count, serum biochemistry, urinary cortisol-to-creatinine ratio (UCCR) and fine-needle aspiration of the mass were subsequently performed. Cytological examination revealed an epithelial tumour with e
