Between 1961 and 1971, military herbicides were used by the United States and allied forces for military purposes. Agent Orange, the most-used herbicide, was a mixture of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid, and contained an impurity of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Many Korean Vietnam veterans were exposed to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between Agent Orange exposure and the prevalence of diseases of the endocrine, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and digestive systems. The A

Hormones and Mobility Abstract. Endocrine disorders affect mobility in many and sometimes characteristic ways such as Cushing's syndrome or hyperparathyroidism, which have direct, hormone-mediated effects on skeletal and muscular tissues. On the other hand, the endocrine system plays an important role in the development of (osteo)sarcopenia, the meaning of which is increasingly recognized in the prognosis of various diseases. Conversely, lack of physical activity is crucial in the development of metabolic diseases, which are associated with serious individual and socio-economic consequences.

Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is a special type of fat tissue in mammals and is also a key endocrine organ in the human body. Batokine, the endocrine effector of BAT, plays a neuroprotective role and improves the prognosis by exerting anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as by improving vascular endothelial function and other mechanisms in nerve injury diseases. The present article briefly reviewed several types of batokines related to central nervous system (CNS) diseases. Following this, the potential therapeutic value and future research direction of batokines for CNS diseases

Endocrine and neurological diseases are rare causes of arterial hypertension in childhood. They represent less than 5% of all cases of secondary hypertension. Inflammatory, traumatic, and tumorous disorders of the central nervous system rarely result in chronic hypertension but may frequently be associated with acute hypertensive crisis. The most important hypertensinogenic endocrine diseases are the catecholamine producing tumors pheochromocytoma and neuroblastoma and disorders of the adrenal cortex such as Cushing's syndrome, hyperaldosteronism, 11-hydroxylase deficiency and other mineraloco

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are a relatively newer class of drugs approved for the treatment of malignancies such as melanoma, renal, bladder and lung cancer. Immune-related adverse events (IrAEs) involving the endocrine system are a common side effect of these drugs. The spectrum of endocrine adverse events varies by the drug class. Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated antigen-4 inhibitors commonly cause hypophysitis/hypopituitarism, whereas the incidence of thyroid disease is higher with programmed cell death (PD)-1/ ligand (PD-L) protein 1 inhibitors. The focus of this review is to des

There is an increasing scientific concern that organochlorine compounds, recognized as environmental pollutants, may cause estrogen-related disorders. One of the main hypotheses is that organochlorines can act through their estrogenic or anti-estrogenic properties. Many endocrine diseases can be concerned by the pathogenic role on environmental residues in their promotion. The carcinogenic potential of environmental xenoestrogens on breast cancer is a matter of controversy. In Europe, despite their prohibition since the 70's, residues persist in soil and rivers, resulting in a widespread conta

Organ specific autoimmune diseases are predominantly diseases of the endocrine glands and involve amongst others the thyroid (Hashimoto's disease, primary myxoedema, Graves' disease), the islets of Langerhans (type I diabetes mellitus) and the adrenals (Addison's disease). Over the past fifty years the knowledge on the pathogenesis of these diseases has considerably increased, leading to a large number of newly developed diagnostic tools, particularly determination of autoantibodies. Most of these autoimmune diseases have a (long) subclinical latency period. During this latency period a reliab

BACKGROUND: Urine albumin creatinine ratio, UACR, is positively associated with all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease and diabetes in observational studies. Whether a high UACR is also associated with other causes of death is unclear. We investigated the association between UACR and cause-specific mortality.
METHODS: We included a total of 9,125 individuals from two population-based studies, Monica10 and Inter99, conducted in 1993-94 and 1999-2001, respectively. Urine albumin creatinine ratio was measured from spot urine samples by standard methods. Information on causes of death was ob

This review demonstrates that hormonal and neuronal factors, which are released during stressful situations, can unfavorably influence the two chronic diseases of rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. Noradrenaline and cortisol are in the focus of this review. In the said two chronic inflammatory diseases, it is obvious that apart from the immune system also the endocrine and nervous system play an essential role in the stress-induced initiation and aggravation of these diseases.

Hepatocrinology explores the intricate relationship between liver function and the endocrine system. Chronic liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis can cause endocrine disorders due to toxin accumulation and protein synthesis disruption. Despite its importance, assessing endocrine issues in cirrhotic patients is frequently neglected. This article provides a comprehensive review of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of endocrine disturbances in liver cirrhosis. The review was conducted using the PubMed/Medline, EMBASE, and Scielo databases, encompassing 172 articles. Li

Primary mitochondrial disorders (PMD) are genetic disorders affecting the structure or function of the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial functions are diverse, including energy production, ion homeostasis, reactive oxygen species regulation, antioxidant defense, and biosynthetic responsibilities, notably including steroidogenesis. Mitochondria provide the energy to drive intracellular production and extracellular secretion of all hormones. The understanding of the endocrine consequences of PMD is key to timely identification of both endocrine complications in PMD patients, and PMD presenting primar

The increase in the incidence of dementia over the last century correlates strongly with the increases in post-reproductive lifespan during this time. As post-reproductive lifespan continues to increase it is likely that the incidence of dementia will also increase unless therapies are developed to prevent, slow or cure dementia. A growing body of evidence implicates age-related endocrine dyscrasia and the length of time that the brain is subjected to this endocrine dyscrasia, as a key causal event leading to the cognitive decline associated with aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD), the major f

Macroglossia is an uncommon condition characterized by chronic, painless and abnormal enlargement of the tongue. A multitude of medical conditions can cause macroglossia. Major endocrine and metabolic disorders associated with macroglossia include genetic, congenital and acquired conditions, such as mucopolysaccharidoses; acquired and congenital hypothyroidism and myxedema; transient neonatal diabetes mellitus; acromegaly and amyloidosis. Macroglossia is often associated (~57-60%) with all types of mucopolysaccharidoses, particularly type I (Hurler syndrome) and type II (Hunter syndrome), bein

Endocrinopathies are prevalent diseases that typically affect multiple organs, and the eye and orbital tissues are often involved in endocrine disorders. Some conditions, such as diabetes and thyroid gland dysfunction, may cause serious eye pathology and even blindness. A clear insight into the pathogenesis of endocrinopathies and their ocular manifestations would enhance preventive and therapeutic measures and reduce the incidence of sight-threatening complications. This review discusses the ocular manifestations of several endocrine disorders that eye care providers are likely to encounter i

Obesity is a disease in which the excess of accumulated body fat has an adverse effect on health and consequently leads to a reduced life expectancy. It is a typical 'disease of civilisation', and is a serious public health problem because of a significant increase in its prevalance. It is also a common symptom in a variety of endocrine disorders, but the factors responsible for the development of obesity in endocrinopathies have not been clearly identified. It is not known whether a common factor responsible for the development of obesity occurs in a number of endocrine diseases. On the other
