Combined endurance and resistance training in participants with muscle dystrophies: a randomized controlled trial.

PURPOSE: Muscular Dystrophies (MD) are genetic neuromuscular disorders characterized by a progressive loss of muscle mass and impaired muscle function. This study aimed to determine whether a group-based supervised exercise training program could improve functional capacity and other secondary physical variables in participants with MDs. METHODS: patients were randomly allocated to one of the study groups: intervention (IG) or control (CG). Intervention consisted of endurance and resistance training at low-to-moderate intensity twice weekly during 12 weeks as well as a home-based respiratory

Normoxic brain endurance training is associated with cognitive and oculomotor performance during acute hypoxia.

PURPOSE: Acute hypoxia can impair processing speed and visual search. In this exploratory non-randomised controlled study, we examined whether normoxic brain endurance training (BET) is associated with cognitive and oculomotor performance during acute hypoxic exposure. METHODS: Thirteen adults (7 females) completed a 6-week BET programme, while 23 separately recruited control participants (10 females) did not. Both groups were tested under normobaric hypoxia (fraction of inspired oxygen, FiO2 = 0.14, simulated 3,200 m). Participants performed a psychomotor vigilance task (PVT), visual search

Aerobic, hematological, and lipid changes after five months of endurance training in distance runners.

Comparative longitudinal data across competitive levels in distance running remain limited, particularly in North African cohorts. Interpreting changes in aerobic and hematological markers is especially important when maximal aerobic capacity is estimated rather than directly measured and when plasma volume is not assessed. To compare baseline anthropometric, aerobic, hematological, and lipid variables among elite runners, competitive runners, and sedentary men, and to describe changes observed across a five-month supervised endurance-training period in the athlete groups. Does overreaching from endurance-based training impair sleep: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Overreaching is often linked to a deterioration in sleep quality, yet a comprehensive review is lacking. The aim of this systemic review and meta-analysis was to synthesise the literature and quantify the effect of overreaching from endurance-based training on sleep quality. METHOD: The review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. The final search was conducted in May 2023 using four electronic databases (Web of Science Core Collection, MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Database, SPORTDiscus). Studies were included for a qualitative review, while random-effects meta-analyses were

Perspectives on Concurrent Strength and Endurance Training in Healthy Adult Females: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Both strength and endurance training are included in global exercise recommendations and are the main components of training programs for competitive sports. While an abundance of research has been published regarding concurrent strength and endurance training, only a small portion of this research has been conducted in females or has addressed their unique physiological circumstances (e.g., hormonal profiles related to menstrual cycle phase, menstrual dysfunction, and hormonal contraceptive use), which may influence training responses and adaptations. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to co

Putative Role of Respiratory Muscle Training to Improve Endurance Performance in Hypoxia: A Review.

Respiratory/inspiratory muscle training (RMT/IMT) has been proposed to improve the endurance performance of athletes in normoxia. In recent years, due to the increased use of hypoxic training method among athletes, the RMT applicability has also been tested as a method to minimize adverse effects since hyperventilation may cause respiratory muscle fatigue during prolonged exercise in hypoxia. We performed a review in order to determine factors potentially affecting the change in endurance performance in hypoxia after RMT in healthy subjects. A comprehensive search was done in the electronic da

Endurance training restores spatially distinct cardiac mitochondrial function and myocardial contractility in ovariectomized rats.

We previously demonstrated that the loss of female hormones induces cardiac and mitochondrial dysfunction in the female heart. Here, we show the impact of endurance training for twelve weeks, a nonpharmacological therapy against cardiovascular disease caused by ovariectomy and its contribution to cardiac contractility, mitochondrial quality control, bioenergetics and oxidative damage. We found that ovariectomy induced cardiac hypertrophy and dysfunction by decreasing SERCA2 and increasing phospholamban protein expression. Endurance training restored myocardial contractility, SERCA2 levels, inc

Efficacy of a multimodal cognitive rehabilitation including psychomotor and endurance training in Parkinson's disease.

Mild cognitive impairment, especially executive dysfunction might occur early in the course of Parkinson's disease. Cognitive training is thought to improve cognitive performance. However, transfer of improvements achieved in paper and pencil tests into daily life has been difficult. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether a multimodal cognitive rehabilitation programme including physical exercises might be more successful than cognitive training programmes without motor training. 240 PD-patients were included in the study and randomly allocated to three treatment arms, group A

Endurance training in the spontaneously hypertensive rat: conversion of pathological into physiological cardiac hypertrophy.

The effect of endurance training (swimming 90 min/d for 5 days a week for 60 days) on cardiac hypertrophy was investigated in the spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). Sedentary SHRs (SHR-Cs) and normotensive Wistar rats were used as controls. Exercise training enhanced myocardial hypertrophy assessed by left ventricular weight/tibial length (228+/-7 versus 251+/-5 mg/cm in SHR-Cs and exercised SHRs [SHR-Es], respectively). Myocyte cross-sectional area increased approximately 40%, collagen volume fraction decreased approximately 50%, and capillary density increased approximately 45% in SHR-Es

Moderate endurance training has no effect on the parathyroid function of heart transplant patients.

The benefit of retraining for heart transplant recipients (HTR) is now well established. The rehabilitation of these patients can be compromised by osteopenia and bone fractures. The resting levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and exercise-induced increases are higher in HTR than in healthy controls. To evaluate the effect of a moderate endurance training programme on parathyroid activity, six HTR, an average of 18 months after transplant, and seven healthy sedentary controls have been studied. None of the subjects had a history of bone disease. Two exercise tests (square wave endurance exerci

Long-term endurance training alters the hypothalamic-pituitary axes for gonadotropins and growth hormone.

In a prospective fashion we have studied the impact of chronic exercise of two intensities on the hypothalamic-pituitary-end organ axes for gonadotropins and GH in gynecologically mature, previously sedentary women. Physiologic alterations are evident in both axes with a doubling of 24-hour mean serum GH concentrations at 1 year and smaller, transient changes in pulsatile LH release during the first four menstrual cycles. The latter period of physiologic adaptation should be studied more intensively with more frequent exercise evaluation. Perhaps more significant "adaptation to stress" would b

Effects of chronic beta-adrenergic blockade on hemodynamic and metabolic responses to endurance training.

To study the influence of chronic propranolol therapy on hemodynamic and metabolic adaptations associated with endurance training, five dogs given 250 mg X d-1 propranolol therapy (P) and five control dogs (NP) were endurance trained for 7 wk using a continuously increasing treadmill workload. The P group was also evaluated pre- and post-training off the drug (P-OD) to separate drug and training effects. Training lowered mean heart rate score (HR) to a standardized multistage dog treadmill test in the NP and P-OD (P less than 0.05) and had no effect on the HR of the P group while on propranolo

Frequency and perceived influence of menopausal symptoms on training and performance in female endurance athletes.

Menopause is associated with several negative health concerns and common menopausal symptoms. Physical activity is essential to mitigate these negative effects, but menopausal symptoms may interfere with participation in physical activity. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and the perceived negative effect of menopausal symptoms among female endurance athletes. Female runners, cyclists, swimmers, and triathletes 40-60 years of age were recruited (N = 187). Participants completed an online, anonymous survey that included self-reported menopausal status; the Menopausal Rat

Influence of oral contraceptive phase on cardiorespiratory response to exercise in endurance-trained athletes.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to analyse the cardiorespiratory response to exercise during an oral contraceptive (OC) cycle in endurance-trained women. METHODS: Sixteen low-dose monophasic OC pill (OCP) users performed an interval-running protocol. The protocol consisted of eight 3 min bouts at 85% of participants' maximal aerobic speed (vV̇o2peak) with a 90s recovery at 30% vV̇o2peak in two OC phases: a withdrawal phase (WP) and an active pill phase (APP). The non-parametric Wilcoxon test was applied to analyse differences (p < 0.05) in performance variables between OC cycle phases. R

The TRPM4 channel is functionally important for the beneficial cardiac remodeling induced by endurance training.

Cardiac hypertrophy (CH) is an adaptive process that exists in two distinct forms and allows the heart to adequately respond to an organism's needs. The first form of CH is physiological, adaptive and reversible. The second is pathological, irreversible and associated with fibrosis and cardiomyocyte death. CH involves multiple molecular mechanisms that are still not completely defined but it is now accepted that physiological CH is associated more with the PI3-K/Akt pathway while the main signaling cascade activated in pathological CH involves the Calcineurin-NFAT pathway. It was recently demo

Adaptation of the respiratory controller contributes to the attenuation of exercise hyperpnea in endurance-trained athletes.

We have reported that minute ventilation [[Formula: see text]] and end-tidal CO(2) tension [[Formula: see text]] are determined by the interaction between central controller and peripheral plant properties. During exercise, the controller curve shifts upward with unchanged central chemoreflex threshold to compensate for the plant curve shift accompanying increased metabolism. This effectively stabilizes [Formula: see text] within the normal range at the expense of exercise hyperpnea. In the present study, we investigated how endurance-trained athletes reduce this exercise hyperpnea. Nine exerc
