The effects of second-generation antipsychotics on food intake, resting energy expenditure and physical activity.

Second-generation antipsychotics (SGA) are associated with weight gain and metabolic alterations including hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, hypertension and metabolic syndrome. These metabolic side effects increase cardiovascular risk and are related to medication non-compliance. Patients without previous exposure to these or other antipsychotic drugs (naive patients) seem to be more prone to develop these metabolic abnormalities. The mechanisms behind weight gain can be an increase in food intake and/or a decrease in energy expenditure. This review comprehensively examines the current knowledge o

Higher protein and energy intake is associated with increased weight gain in pre-term infants.

AIM: To characterise and compare the nutritional management and growth in infants <33 weeks' gestation in two tertiary centres. METHODS: An audit of daily intake and growth from birth to discharge home was undertaken in two neonatal units: The KK Women's and Children's Hospital Singapore and the Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital, South Australia. Mixed models were used to model intake and daily weight (g/day) accounting for repeated day per subject. RESULTS: The clinical characteristics of the two cohorts were similar. The Adelaide cohort had a higher initial energy intake in the firs

High intake of energy, sucrose, and polyunsaturated fatty acids is associated with increased risk of preeclampsia.

OBJECTIVE: Preeclampsia is associated with high body mass index, insulin resistance, and hypertriglyceridemia. Our objective was to investigate prospectively whether diet in the first half of pregnancy is associated with the risk for preeclampsia. STUDY DESIGN: This prospective, population-based, cohort study of pregnant women investigated dietary intake early in the second trimester with a quantitative food frequency questionnaire. RESULTS: The questionnaire was completed by 3133 women (83%). Preeclampsia developed in 85 women. Adjusted odds ratio (95% CI) for preeclampsia was 3.7 (1.5-8.9)

Excess energy intake promotes the development of hypoalbuminaemia in rats fed on low-protein diets.

1. A group of rats were given ad lib, a diet with a protein-energy: total energy (P:E) value of 0 . 03. Other animals received the same protein intake (g/kg body-weight per d) as this group, but had their energy consumption reduced to either 90, 80, 70, 60 or 50% of the ad lib. value. 2. The restricted growth rate of rats fed on the P:E--0 . 03 diet ad lib. has been shown to be due entirely to their insufficient protein consumption. In contrast, energy intake was far in excess of that required for maintenance and the limited amount of growth. 3. Carcass analysis demonstrated that some of the e

Metabolic and development changes in growing rats born to dams restricted in protein and/or energy intake.

During gestation and lactation, the food intake of female rats was restricted to 50% of the ad libitum stock diet intake of controls (C). One restricted group (M1) was fed stock diet while another restricted group (M2) was fed casein-supplemented stock diet containing 66% protein. Observations were directed to their progeny. After weaning at 21 days, all progeny were fed the stock diet ad libitum for 2 weeks. Mean birth weight of M2 was lower than M1 which was lower than C. Weight gain of progeny was faster in M2 than M1 but both were less than C. At 5 weeks, M2 had normal brain weight but low

Effects of Liraglutide on Energy Intake in Adolescents With Persistent Obesity After Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy.

BACKGROUND: In adolescents with obesity ≥ 1-year post-vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), a pilot trial of liraglutide demonstrated a 4.3% BMI reduction. This secondary analysis evaluated energy intake changes (∆EI) and associations of ∆EI with oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) outcomes and end-of-trial liraglutide plasma concentrations. METHODS: At baseline and after 4 months of liraglutide, participants completed a standardised buffet meal following a 2-h OGTT. Liraglutide plasma area under the curves (AUCs) were quantified using LC-MS/MS. RESULTS: Twenty-seven participants (18.1 ± 2.0 yea

Sex-specific changes in appetite and energy intake in response to chronic resistance training in rats.

Resistance training (RT) is widely prescribed for health, yet its effects on energy compensation and appetite regulation remain poorly defined, particularly across sexes. This study examined the effects of chronic RT on energy intake and appetite-regulating hormones in rats. Animals (n = 40) were assigned to female control, female RT, male control, or male RT and completed a 12-week ladder-based RT protocol. Energy intake was assessed longitudinally, and hormonal responses were measured during a resistance training exercise test (RTET). RT reduced total energy intake (p = 0.022) without alteri

The interplay between early energy intake and nosocomial infection risk in the critically ill neonate.

This study aimed to assess the association between early nutritional support - specifically the attainment of predefined energy targets - and the risk of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) in critically ill neonates. We conducted a retrospective cohort study involving 200 critically ill neonates admitted to a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit between January 2022 and December 2023. Participants were stratified into 2 exposure groups according to the timing of nutritional initiation and adequacy of energy/protein intake during the first postnatal week: an early-adequate nutrition group (n

Impact of dinner timing and energy intake on metabolic and mental health: a systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this review is to appraise and synthesize randomized controlled trials (RCTs) examining the effects of dinner timing (late vs early) and energy intake (high vs low) on both mental and metabolic health. INTRODUCTION: Beyond what and how much we eat, growing evidence suggests that when we eat significantly impacts our health, yet the true magnitude of this effect remains unclear. Late-night eating is linked to circadian rhythm disruption, metabolic conditions (eg, metabolic syndrome, obesity, type 2 diabetes), sleep disturbances, and mood disorders (eg, depression, anxiety

The effects of an acute resistance exercise bout on appetite and energy intake in healthy older adults.

Ageing is associated with reductions in appetite and food intake leading to unintentional weight loss. Such weight loss, particularly through muscle mass reduction, is associated with muscle weakness and functional decline, which represent predictors of poor health outcomes and contribute to frailty in older adults. Exercise-induced anorexia is an established phenomenon in young adults; however appetite and energy intake (EI) responses to resistance exercise are unknown in older adults. Twenty healthy older adults (68 ± 5 years, BMI 26.2 ± 4.5 kg m-2) undertook two 5-h experimental trials. Par

The timing of intermittent hypoxia differentially affects macronutrient intake and energy substrate utilization in mice.

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder characterized by periodic breathing cessation and intermittent hypoxia (IH). Although previous studies have demonstrated that IH alone can influence metabolic outcomes such as body weight, it remains unclear how the timing of IH can specifically affect these outcomes. Here, we examine how pairing 10-h periods of IH to either the animals' resting phase (e.g., IH during the day) or active phase (e.g., IH during the night) differentially affects body weight, macronutrient selection, energy expenditure, respiratory exchange rate, and glucose tolerance. We fin

Effects of early energy intake on neonatal cerebral growth of preterm newborn: an observational study.

Current guidelines for preterm newborns recommend high energy nutrition soon after birth in order to limit growth retardation. However, long-term effects of this nutritional approach are still debated, and it has been demonstrated that cerebral growth depends on protein intake in early life. A negative impact of early high energy intake by parenteral nutrition (PN) has been reported for patients in critically ill conditions, observed in intensive care unit. We aimed at evaluating the impact of energy intake on cerebral growth in preterm neonates early in life. We included preterm newborns with

Evaluating the Dietary Intakes of Energy, Macronutrients, Sugar, Fiber, and Micronutrients in Children With Celiac Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Children with celiac disease (CD) follow a lifelong gluten-free diet. This restrictive diet may be associated with nutritional compromise. Our objectives were, therefore, to evaluate the dietary composition (energy, macronutrients and micronutrients, and fiber) in children with CD compared with healthy controls (HC) and relationship between dietary composition and socioeconomic status. METHODS: This cross-sectional, case-control study recruited children with CD ages 2 to 18 years and HC matched for age, sex, and socioeconomic status. Clinical, sociodemographic, and dietary informa

Energy intake and expenditure in patients with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment: the NUDAD project.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is common in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and is associated with institutionalization and increased mortality. Malnutrition is the result of a negative energy balance, which could be due to reduced dietary intake and/or higher energy expenditure. To study underlying mechanisms for malnutrition, we investigated dietary intake and resting energy expenditure (REE) of patients with AD dementia, MCI, and controls. In addition, we studied associations of global cognition (Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE)) and AD biom

Perceived Family Functioning in Relation to Energy Intake in Adolescent Girls with Loss of Control Eating.

Family functioning is hypothesized to influence the development, maintenance, and treatment of obesity and eating disorders. However, there are limited data examining family functioning in relation to energy intake in the laboratory among youth at high-risk for eating disorders and excess weight gain. Therefore, we examined the relationship between perceived family functioning and energy intake during a laboratory test meal designed to model a binge episode. We performed hierarchical multiple regression analyses among 108 adolescent girls in an excess weight gain prevention trial. Participants

Impact of excess gestational and post-weaning energy intake on vascular function of swine offspring.

BACKGROUND: The development of long-term vascular disease can be linked to the intrauterine environment, and maternal nutrition during gestation plays a critical role in the future vascular health of offspring. The purpose of this investigation was to test the hypothesis that a high-energy (HE) gestational diet, HE post-weaning diet, or their combination will lead to endothelial dysfunction in offspring. METHODS: Duroc × Landrace gilts (n = 16) were assigned to either a HE (10,144 Kcal/day, n = 8) or normal energy (NE: 6721 Kcal/day, n = 8) diet throughout pregnancy. Piglets were placed on ei
