A Comparative Study of Cell Specific Effects of Systemic and Volatile Anesthetics on Identified Motor Neurons and Interneurons of Lymnaea stagnalis (L.), Both in the Isolated Brain and in Single Cell Culture.

1. A comparative descriptive analysis of systemic (sodium pentobarbital, sodium thiopentone, ketamine) and volatile (halothane, isoflurane, enflurane) general anesthetics revealed important differences in the neuronal responses of identified motor neurons and interneurons in the isolated central nervous system (CNS) and cultured identified neurons in single cell culture of Lymnaea stagnalis (L.). 2. At high enough concentrations all anesthetics eventually caused cessation of spontaneous or evoked action potentials, but volatile anesthetics were much faster acting. Halothane at low concentratio

[Intraoperative hyperpyrexia in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta].

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different types of anesthesia upon the intra- and postoperative body temperature in osteogenesis imperfecta patients. The development of an intraoperative hyperpyrexia of unknown origin is a typical phenomenon in patients with osteogenesis imperfecta. Body temperatures of up to 40 degrees C are known to complicate the operation. Therefore, in a retrospective study, the pre-, intra- and postoperative body temperature curves of 45 operations under different anaesthesias were measured. Group A underwent a common balanced anaesthesia with the

Solubility of volatile anesthetics in plasma substitutes, albumin, intravenous fat emulsions, perfluorochemical emulsion, and aqueous solutions.

Using the gas chromatographic headspace sampling technique, we determined the solubility of volatile anesthetics (halothane, enflurane, isoflurane, and sevoflurane) in plasma substitutes, albumin solution, intravenous fat emulsions, perfluorochemical FC-43 emulsion, and aqueous solutions at 37°C. The order of magnitude of λ value (liquid/gas partition coefficients) was halothane >enflurane>isoflurane> sevoflurane in all the parenteral infusion fluids except the perfluorochemical emulsion (FC-43). The FC-43/gas partition coefficients of the volatile anesthetics were almost the same at 5.5. The

Effects of volatile anesthetics or fentanyl on hepatic function in cirrhotic rats.

Halothane, enflurane, isoflurane, and fentanyl were examined for their potential to exacerbate liver dysfunction in rats with preexisting cirrhosis. Male Wistar rats given sodium phenobarbital for 2 weeks are assigned randomly to two groups. One group (cirrhotic) was exposed by inhalation to carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in air at weekly intervals for 12 weeks to induce cirrhosis. The other group (noncirrhotic) was handled similarly but received air only. Five weeks after the last exposure to CCl4, cirrhotic and noncirrhotic rats were given three hours of 1 MAC halothane, enflurane, or isofluran

Anesthetic-induced changes in cardiovascular and small intestinal responses to endotoxin in the rat.

The influence of anesthesia on endotoxin shock patterns in the rat was examined. Blood pressure, heart rate, arterial blood gases, glucose, lactate, and pathology of the small intestine were measured before and after endotoxin (40 mg/kg) challenge in male Sprague-Dawley rats. The three groups studied were: (1) enflurane anesthetized (N = 10), (2) ketamine anesthetized (N = 10), and (3) awake and unrestrained (N = 13). Measurements were made during 30 min prior to endotoxin injection (IV) and for 240 min afterward. Reflex tachycardia, which occurred in the awake group simultaneously with the in

Postanesthetic hepatic injury in rats: influence of alterations in hepatic blood flow, surgery, and anesthesia time.

Hepatic injury was measured in enzyme-induced rats following ligation of the hepatic artery performed under anesthesia with thiamylal, halothane, enflurane, or isoflurane. The influence of surgical site was determined by performing upper abdominal (sham ligation), lower abdominal, and peripheral surgery on rats anesthetized with halothane. The effect of anesthesia time was evaluated by continuing halothane anesthesia for 1, 2, or 4 hours after upper abdominal (sham ligation) surgery. Centrilobular necrosis did not occur in enzyme-induced rats anesthetized with thiamylal, isoflurane, or enflura

Effects of fentanyl on the response of plasma beta-endorphin immunoreactivity to surgery.

Beta-endorphin appears to play a definite role in the biologic response to stress and in the endogenous mechanism of pain perception. Opiates exogenously administered during surgery decrease or even suppress the activation of "stress hormones" such as ACTH and cortisol. In the present study, the authors tried to assess the effects of fentanyl administration on plasma beta-endorphin immunoreactivity PBE(ir) during surgical stress. In one group of nine patients, a standard enflurane-based general anesthetic technique without opiates was used for a staging laparotomy. A second group of ten patien

The effects of bronchodilator-inhaler aerosol propellants on respiratory gas monitors.

Spurious readings from a mass spectrometer have been reported following the administration of aerosol bronchodilators. We quantified the response of various respiratory gas analyzers to the aerosol propellant of albuterol inhalant (Proventil). The mass spectrometer systems tested, two Advantage systems, a SARA system, and a Model 6000 Ohmeda system, all displayed artifactual readings in response to the albuterol propellant. Each metered dose of the Proventil brand of albuterol contains 4 ml of Freon 11 (trichloromonofluoromethane) and 11 ml of Freon 12 (dichlorodifluoromethane). The concentrat

Tramadol or morphine administered during operation: a study of immediate postoperative effects after abdominal hysterectomy.

Tramadol may cause awareness and EEG activation during anaesthesia. We compared tramadol with morphine, administered during wound-closure, surmising that tramadol may cause earlier awakening, more rapid recovery, less respiratory depression and equivalent pain relief. Forty patients received nitrous oxide-enflurane for abdominal surgery. At wound closure, patients received tramadol 3 mg kg-1 or morphine 0.2 mg kg-1 and end-tidal enflurane concentrations were maintained at 0.5 kPa until skin closure, whereupon anaesthesia was discontinued. Times to spontaneous respiration, awakening and orienta

Effect of age on MAC in humans: a meta-analysis.

It is well known that MAC, the minimum alveolar concentration required to prevent movement in response to surgical incision in 50% of patients, decreases with age. Regression analysis showed that data for humans derived from a comprehensive literature survey were consistent, for age > 1 yr, with log10 MAC decreasing with increasing age at the same rate for all inhaled anaesthetics; approximately equivalent to 6% change per decade of age. With some slight reservation on differences between data from different institutions, the present data for humans are consistent (for age > 1 yr), with the eq

[Anesthetic management of a patient with a giant ovarian tumor complicated with cerebral palsy].

The anesthetic management of a patient with a giant ovarian tumor (16.5kg) was reported. The patient was a 32 year old female with cerebral palsy and severe mental retardation. The management of anesthesia in this case including induction of anesthesia, intra-operative hypotension due to removal of tumor and post operative pulmonary complication, should be considered carefully. Especially, the monitoring of central venous pressure was essential, because the venous return fluctuates markedly depending on the surgical procedure. Patient had no premedication. Anesthesia was induced with halothane

Modulation of the benzodiazepine/gamma-aminobutyric acid receptor chloride channel complex by inhalation anesthetics.

Inhalation anesthetics, such as diethyl ether, halothane, and enflurane, increase 36Cl- uptake into rat cerebral cortical synaptoneurosomes in a concentration-dependent, picrotoxin-sensitive fashion. At concentrations consistent with those that stimulate 36Cl- uptake, inhalation anesthetics also inhibit the binding of t-[35S]butylbicyclophosphorothionate ([35S]TBPS) to well-washed cortical membranes. Scatchard analysis of [35S]TBPS binding indicates that these agents reduce the apparent affinity of this radioligand and have little effect on the Bmax. The ability of inhalation anesthetics to di

Clinical comparison of inhalation anaesthetic agents.

Despite the continued revival in the use of local anaesthetic techniques, and the fact that some of the versatility of inhalation agents is being approached by newer short acting i.v. anaesthetic and analgesic agents, volatile anaesthetics will continue to play an important role in the management of patients undergoing surgery. The individual agents have distinct properties and varying benefit-to-risk ratios depending upon the medical status of the patients and the type of surgery to be undertaken. In certain circumstances, such as their role in the anaesthetic management of patients with coro

Central depletion of catecholamines--importance of hypertension and anesthesia.

The importance of the brain noradrenergic sympathetic nervous system in blood pressure control during anesthesia with halothane and enflurane was investigated in normotensive and hypertensive rats. Central noradrenergic neurons were destroyed by instillation of 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) into the cerebral ventricle of both normotensive Wistar rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). One week later, arterial and venous lines were placed in the rats under anesthesia; the rats were allowed to recover; and blood pressure and plasma renin activity were measured while the rats were awake. Rat intubation and ventilation for surgical research.

Effective outcomes in cardiothoracic surgical research using rodents are dependent upon adequate techniques for intubation and mechanical ventilation. Multiple methods are available for intubation of the rat; however, not all techniques are appropriate for survival studies. This article presents a refinement of intubation techniques and a simplified mechanical ventilation setup necessary for intrathoracic surgical procedures using volatile anesthetics. The procedure is defined and complications of the procedure are elucidated that provide a justification for animal numbers needed for initiatin

[Experimental studies on the recovery of anesthetic gases].

The volatile anesthetic agents halothane, enflurane, and isoflurane are chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) and contribute to ozone depletion. Although the contribution is small, its importance is rising, as technical CFCs will be phased out according to the Montreal protocol (1987) and the London conference (1990) by the year 2000. Alternative procedures and CFC-free volatile agents such as des- and sevoflurane do not contribute to depletion of the ozone layer, but will not replace standard methods using volatile anesthetic agents in the near future. METHODS. In an experimental setup, we filtered anest

Anaesthesia for an unusual carcinoid metastasis.

The intra-operative course of a patient found to have a metastatic serotonin-secreting carcinoid tumour in the orbit is reported. No prophylactic or intra-operative therapy was necessary during the administration of enflurane anesthesia. This case demonstrates again the wide spectrum of clinical responses observed among patients with this disease.

Volatile anesthetic effects on glutamate versus GABA release from isolated rat cortical nerve terminals: basal release.

The effects of three volatile anesthetics (isoflurane, enflurane, and halothane) on basal release of glutamate and GABA from isolated rat cerebrocortical nerve terminals (synaptosomes) were compared using a dual isotope superfusion method. Concentration-dependent effects on basal release differed between anesthetics and transmitters. Over a range of clinical concentrations (0.5-2x minimum alveolar concentration), basal glutamate release was inhibited by all three anesthetics, whereas basal GABA release was enhanced (isoflurane) or unaffected (enflurane and halothane). These effects may represe
