Since the early 2000s, skeletal effects, specifically enterococcal spondylitis, related to pathogenic Enterococcus cecorum (EC), have been observed in older broiler chicken flocks. This skeletal involvement has typically been associated with persistent EC infections in the free thoracic vertebrae leading to paralysis. However, the emergence of virulent EC in young broiler chicken flocks causing clinical septicemia requires further investigation. The purpose of this review is to provide an update on EC-related research and pending industry needs.

Enterococcus faecalis is a bacterial species present at a subdominant level in the human gut microbiota. This commensal turns into an opportunistic pathogen under specific conditions involving dysbiosis and host immune deficiency. E. faecalis is one of the rare pathobionts identified to date as contributing to liver damage in alcoholic liver disease. We have previously observed that E. faecalis is internalized in hepatocytes. Here, the survival and fate of E. faecalis was examined in hepatocytes, the main epithelial cell type in the liver. Although referred to as an extracellular pathogen, we

Enterococci are important microorganisms of the gut microbiome in many mammals and cause millions of infections annually. An increasing resistance to antibiotics has led to their emergence as superinfecting nosocomial pathogens in humans. Enterococcus hirae is rarely identified in humans. In this study, we present a case of the polymicrobial osteomyelitis involving Enterococcus hirae in a 33-year-old male patient with traumatic tibia-fibula fracture after a motor vehicle accident. He underwent a right below-the-knee amputation and antibiotics with excellent improvement. Our case study helps to

Manganese (Mn) is an essential micronutrient that is not readily available to pathogens during infection due to an active host defense mechanism known as nutritional immunity. To overcome this nutrient restriction, bacteria utilize high-affinity transporters that allow them to compete with host metal-binding proteins. Despite the established role of Mn in bacterial pathogenesis, little is known about the relevance of Mn in the pathophysiology of E. faecalis. Here, we identified and characterized the major Mn acquisition systems of E. faecalis. We discovered that the ABC-type permease EfaCBA an

Enterococci, a complex group of facultative pathogens have become increasingly isolated in various hospital settings. They are considerable frequently cultured from traumatic and surgical wounds. We investigated 57 strains of the species E. faecalis, E. faecium and E. casseliflavus isolated from infected wounds. Their ability to produce virulence factors and their sensitivity to antibiotics were evaluated using phenotypic and genotyping methods. In the phenotype studies, significant portion of the isolates produced biofilm (66.7%) and gelatinase (36.8%). Nearly 30% of the strains expressed hem

Enterococci are major nosocomial pathogens due to their intrinsic resistance to many antimicrobials as well as to their ability to acquire new mechanisms of resistance. Acquired resistance to beta-lactams is due to PBP5 overproduction or alterations in this protein. Beta-lactamase production is anecdotal. High-level resistance (HLR) to aminoglycosides is due to the production of aminoglycoside-modifying enzymes that delete synergistic killing in association with cell wall-active agents. The most frequent enzyme is AAC(6')- APH(2"), which inactivates all the aminoglycosides most frequently used

We found ampicillin- and imipenem-resistant isolates of vanA-possessing Enterococcus faecalis with MICs of 8 to 16 microg/ml and 4 to 32 microg/ml, respectively. There have been few reports about penicillin- and imipenem-resistant E. faecalis. Two mechanisms of beta-lactam resistance in E. faecalis, the production of beta-lactamase and the overproduction of penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), have been reported. The resistant isolates in the current study did not produce any beta-lactamases and analysis of the PBPs showed no overproduction. However, the affinities of PBP4 for beta-lactams in t

The occurrence, distribution and characterization of enterococci in municipal sewages from two geographically different regional sewage treatment plants in East Slovakia was studied. The total counts of enterococci in samples varied from 10(4) to 10(6) CFU/ml. The vast majority of the strains identified were Enterococcus faecium (50%), with E. gallinarum (25.5%) and E. casseliflavus (10.1%). The species which accounted for 14.4% of the cultures were not specified. Lactic acid production from twenty isolates ranged from 0.085 mol l-1 to 0.914 mol l-1. Urease activity ranged from 1.21 nkat ml-1

Enterococcus faecium BM4165 and BM4178, isolated from immunocompromised patients, one treated with vancomycin, were inducibly resistant to high levels of the glycopeptide antibiotics vancomycin and teicoplanin but susceptible to the new lipopeptide daptomycin (LY146032). Strain BM4165 was also resistant to macrolidelincosamide-streptogramin B-type (MLS) antibiotics. The genes conferring resistance to glycopeptides and to MLS antibiotics in strain BM4165 were carried on plasmids pIP819 and pIP821, respectively; pIP819 also carried genes that encoded resistance to MLS antibiotics. The two plasmi

Enterococcus spp. are common but not predominant commensal bacteria that inhabit the gastrointestinal tracts of humans and animals and are widely distributed in various environmental matrices and diverse food sources. Multiple strains of beneficial enterococci are increasingly utilized as protective cultures, alternatives to antibiotics, and probiotics for controlling pathogens, mitigating disease, modulating the microbiome, and supporting overall host health. They also support food fermentation and safety, enhance sensory properties, and produce bioactive compounds such as bacteriocins with s

AIMS AND BACKGROUND: Due to its resilience and resistance to common intracanal disinfectants and medicines, Enterococcus faecalis, also known as E. faecalis, is a notorious pathogen in endodontics that is frequently isolated from persistent and secondary root canal infections. Its growing resistance to antibiotics that target the cell wall is concerning, and its clinical impact on endodontic failure is widely acknowledged. Yet, there remains a lack of comprehensive understanding of the global transcriptional responses that E. faecalis employs to survive exposure to widely used β-lactams and gl

The opportunistic pathogen Enterococcus faecium colonizes humans and a wide range of animals, endures numerous stresses, resists antibiotic treatment and stubbornly persists in clinical environments. The widespread application of antibiotics in hospitals and agriculture has contributed to the emergence of vancomycin-resistant E. faecium, which causes many hospital-acquired infections. In this Review, we explore recent discoveries about the evolutionary history, the environmental adaptation and the colonization and dissemination mechanisms of E. faecium and vancomycin-resistant E. faecium. Thes

We describe a 32-year-old lady who was admitted with a urinary tract infection following vacuum-assisted delivery. She was diagnosed with Enterococcus faecium related emphysematous cystitis, bladder gangrene and rupture necessitating emergency laparotomy and partial cystectomy. She had a repeat laparotomy nine days later due to continuing bladder necrosis on cystoscopy. The patient stayed in hospital for over two months due to complications including hospital acquired Klebsiella pneumonia, adult respiratory distress syndrome and malnutrition. Discharge occurred one week after an ileal conduit
