Tsetse and trypanosomiasis survey of Southern Darfur province, Sudan. II. Entomological aspects.

Atsetse survey of Southern Darfur province, Sudan showed that the distribution of the only species present, Glossina morsitans submorsitans, had not appreciably altered over 10 years. Fly populations are most dense south of the Wadi Umbelasha but light infestations are found in the woodlands north of this riverine system to a latitude of about 10 degrees 15' N. Data are given on host availability which is thought to be the major factor determining tsetse distribution. The relative importance of tsetse and of tabanids as transmitters of bovine trypanosomiasis in the province is discussed. The e

An outbreak of Mayaro virus disease in Belterra, Brazil. III. Entomological and ecological studies.

Results in entomological and vertebrate host investigations made during dual outbreaks of Mayaro (MAY) and yellow fever (YF) viruses in Belterra, Pará, Brazil in 1978 are reported. Over 9,000 insects representing 26 species were assayed in 396 pools for the presence of arboviruses. Pools of Haemagogus janthinomys Dyar yielded the only isolates of either MAY or YF virus. The minimum field infection rate for nine isolates of MAY virus from Hg. janthinomys was 1:82, and for two isolates of YF virus was 1:368. Analysis of collection data showed Hg. janthinomys to be attracted to man as a blood sou

Endemicity of a Yellow Fever Virus Strain Revealed by Entomological Surveillance in Southeastern Senegal.

Yellow fever virus is an endemic mosquito-borne flavivirus that continues to cause outbreaks in human populations in Senegal despite the availability of a vaccine. Entomological surveillance was implemented in southeastern Senegal for the early detection of sylvatic amplifications, which usually trigger human cases. Mosquito vectors were collected monthly using Prokopack aspirators and double-net traps. Mosquitoes were pooled and tested by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction assay targeting antigens of common arboviruses circulating in the area, and then positive sampl

Surveillance of West Nile Virus in Tunisia: Evidence from Human and Entomological Investigation.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne pathogen of the Flaviviridae family that poses recurring public health threats in Tunisia, where Culex pipiens is recognized as the primary vector. Identification of circulating strains in different mosquito species is essential for targeted prevention and control. Between November 2021 and October 2022, mosquitoes were collected at four high-risk sites, and human samples were obtained through the national meningitis surveillance program. Human serum, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and urine samples were tested for WNV-specific IgM and IgG antibodies using

Molecular and Entomological Characterization of 2023 Dengue Outbreak in Dhading District, Central Nepal.

In 2023, Nepal faced its second largest dengue outbreak ever, following a record-breaking number of dengue cases in 2022, characterized by the expansion of infections into areas of higher altitudes. However, the characteristics of the 2023 circulating dengue virus (DENV) and the vector density remain poorly understood. Therefore, we performed DENV serotyping, clinical and laboratory assessment, and entomological analysis of the 2023 outbreak in central Nepal. A total of 396 fever cases in Dhading hospital suspected of being DENV positive were enrolled, and blood samples were collected and test

Influence of landscape heterogeneity on entomological and parasitological indices of malaria in Kisumu, Western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Identification and characterization of larval habitats, documentation of Anopheles spp. composition and abundance, and Plasmodium spp. infection burden are critical components of integrated vector management. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of landscape heterogeneity on entomological and parasitological indices of malaria in western Kenya. METHODS: A cross-sectional entomological and parasitological survey was conducted along an altitudinal transect in three eco-epidemiological zones: lakeshore along the lakeside, hillside, and highland plateau during the wet and

Seasonal trends in epidemiological and entomological profiles of malaria transmission in North Central Nigeria.

The influence of seasonal changes on epidemiological and entomological indices of malaria transmission in North Central Nigeria was elucidated in a series of studies carried out between January 2004 and December 2009. The climate in the study area was divided into three seasonal periods namely, rainy (May-October), dry (December-March) and transitional (April and November), during which larval and adult anopheline mosquito collections were carried out and assessed for densities, sporozoite infection and parity rates and potentials for malaria transmission. The results indicated that the climat

Rift Valley fever virus epidemic in Kenya, 2006/2007: the entomologic investigations.

In December 2006, Rift Valley fever (RVF) was diagnosed in humans in Garissa Hospital, Kenya and an outbreak reported affecting 11 districts. Entomologic surveillance was performed in four districts to determine the epidemic/epizootic vectors of RVF virus (RVFV). Approximately 297,000 mosquitoes were collected, 164,626 identified to species, 72,058 sorted into 3,003 pools and tested for RVFV by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Seventy-seven pools representing 10 species tested positive for RVFV, including Aedes mcintoshi/circumluteolus (26 pools), Aedes ochraceus (23 pools), Ma

Entomological investigation of a sylvatic yellow fever area in São Paulo State, Brazil.

Following reports of two autochthonous cases of sylvatic yellow fever in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, in 2000, entomological surveys were conducted with the objective of verifying the occurrence of vector species in forest environments close to or associated with riparian areas located in the western and northwestern regions of the State. Culicidae were captured in 39 sites distributed in four regions. Haemagogus leucocelaenus and Aedes albopictus were the most abundant species and were captured in all the regions studied. H. leucocelaenus was the most abundant species in the municipalities

[Evaluation of the immunological and entomological indices of yellow fever in the subprefecture of Taï, Ivory Coast].

The authors report the results of a serological sample survey managed to evaluate the prevalence of yellow fever antibodies, connected with an entomological survey, in the area of Taï in Côte d'Ivoire. The refugee population has a high rate of non protected people, contrary to the Ivory population especially under 15 years old, because Côte d'Ivoire has included YF vaccine in his Expanded Programme on Immunization. A campaign of vaccination has been carried out.

Entomologic investigations of an epidemic of St. Louis encephalitis in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, 1991.

An epidemic of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) occurred in Jefferson County, Arkansas during July-August 1991. At least 26 human cases were involved, with 25 cases in the town of Pine Bluff. Twelve isolates of SLE virus were obtained from mosquitoes collected in Pine Bluff between August 13 and 24: 11 from pools of Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus, resulting in a minimum infection rate of 1.6 per 1,000 (n = 6,768) for this subspecies, and one isolate from a pool of 22 mosquitoes identified as Cx. (Culex) spp. Three of the SLE-positive pools, two from Cx. p. quinquefasciatus and one from Cx. (Cux.)

The onchocerciasis focus at Kinsuka/Kinshasa (Republic of Zaire) in 1985. I. Entomological aspect.

The entomological aspect of the onchocerciasis focus at Kinsuka/Kinshasa has not been studied since vector control was carried out in 1948. As in 1940, larvae of Simulium damnosum s.l. are located in the arm of the Zaire River flowing between Mimosa Island and the Zairian bank. They are, however, scarce. Cytotaxonomic studies showed that the S. squamosum group was the only member of the S. damnosum complex present in the region of Kinshasa. Physico-chemical analysis of the water at breeding sites determined that S. squamosum larvae develop in neutral or acid water with a conductivity of less t

Entomologic studies after a St. Louis encephalitis epidemic in Grand Junction, Colorado.

In 1986, after a St. Louis encephalitis epidemic in Grand Junction, Colorado, in 1985, vector mosquitoes in the city were surveyed to correlate their bionomics and infection rates with the occurrence of human disease. No human cases were reported, but mosquito surveillance disclosed St. Louis encephalitis virus in Culex tarsalis and Culex pipiens pipiens. Mosquitoes were collected with gravid traps designed to attract Cx. p. pipiens and with Centers for Disease Control light traps. Culex p. pipiens was the predominant vector mosquito collected and was captured chiefly in gravid traps. The Cule

[Socio-entomologic survey in human trypanosomiasis focus of Yamba (Peoples Republic of Congo)].

A study carried out at villagers level in a focus infected by human trypanosomiasis (Yamba, Bouenza region, Congo, Mikengue ethnic group) revealed that modern medicin is recognized by them as the sole possibility to treat the sleeping sickness. The witch doctor, if he cannot transmit the sickness, is perfectly able to aggravate it. He is considered as the responsible for any fatal issue. Tsetse flies are charged of transmitting the sickness as well as other biting insects (black flies, ceratopogonidae). The elders give an historical role to pigs in spreading the sickness.
