High scattering sensitivity entropy imaging for breast tumor characterization and classification.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing and characterizing breast lesions and tumors remains a common challenge in clinical practice. Ultrasound imaging stands out for its safety, real-time capability, and affordability. However, the image quality of conventional ultrasound examination is limited, and the diagnosis of ultrasonographic images depends heavily on the experience of the sonographer. Therefore, improving ultrasound images and extracting tissue information from ultrasound signals to provide auxiliary means is crucial for accurate breast tumor diagnosis. PURPOSE: Medical ultrasound imaging has been w

Precise synthesis of targeted noble metal-based high-entropy alloy nanomaterials.

Noble metal-based high-entropy alloys (NM-HEAs) are promising catalysts because of their diverse compositions and complex surface structures, although understanding their formation and achieving precise atomic control remain challenging. Our team introduces a cost-effective synthesis method combining spray drying and thermal decomposition-reduction to produce HEA three-dimensional nanoframeworks (HEA-3DNFs) from quinary to octonary compositions, including Pt-, Ir-, Ru-, and PtRu-based HEAs. Mild heating in H2 facilitates simultaneous reduction of multiple elements, forming single-phase solid s

Homogenization of Post-Transition Metal Alloys into High-Entropy-Like Nanoparticles.

Presently, the most common high-entropy systems are formed from the mixing of immiscible transition metals under extreme conditions. Here, a new class of high-entropy-like nanoparticles is reported, based entirely on post-transition metals, Ga, In, Sn, Zn, and Bi, which undergo core-level nanoscale homogenization via low-temperature sonication. Starting from a bulk high-entropy-like melt, with clear phase segregation, including Ga-rich, Zn-rich, and Bi-rich domains, ultrasonic agitation is applied to disrupt their immiscibility. The resulting cavitation and shear forces promote rapid mixing an

Stabilizing Single-Crystalline Ni-Rich Cathode via Epitaxial Entropy-Assisted Surface.

Single-crystalline Ni-rich LiNixMnyCo1-x-yO2 (SNCM, x ≥ 0.8) materials are regarded as next-generation cathodes for lithium-ion batteries. However, SNCM cathodes show readily low structural stability due to surface reconstruction and irreversible strain evolution during cycling at high voltages. Here, we demonstrate that Y2O3 material incorporated into SNCM cathodes forms an epitaxial entropy-assisted surface layer, which acts as a highly compatible region to facilitate Li-ion transmission, suppress interface reaction and transition metal dissolution. Meanwhile, soluble Al ions are uniformly d

Liquid metal-induced low-temperature synthesis of tunable high-entropy oxides.

High-entropy oxides (HEOs) have attracted attention due to their unique elemental synergistic effect and lattice distortion. However, mixing elements' vastly different radii and valences leads to substantial element segregation during the reaction. In addition, the requirement for a harsh temperature (1100°C) to achieve entropy stabilization results in the volatilization of low-melting point components. Here, we propose a strategy for synthesizing functionalized Ga-based HEOs (GHEOs) at a low temperature (400°C) by the Ga integration mechanism. The negative mixing enthalpy between Ga and other

Disrupted cognitive network revealed by task-induced brain entropy in schizophrenia.

Brain entropy (BEN), which measures the amount of information in brain activity, provides a novel perspective for evaluating brain function. Recent studies using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have shown that BEN during rest can help characterize brain function alterations in schizophrenia (SCZ). However, there is a lack of research on BEN using task-evoked fMRI to explore task-dependent cognitive deficits in SCZ. In this study, we evaluate whether the reduced working memory (WM) capacity in SCZ is possibly associated with dynamic changes in task BEN during tasks wi

Calculating sample entropy from isometric torque signals: methodological considerations and recommendations.

We investigated the effect of different sampling frequencies, input parameters and observation times for sample entropy (SaEn) calculated on torque data recorded from a submaximal isometric contraction. Forty-six participants performed sustained isometric knee flexion at 20% of their maximal contraction level and torque data was sampled at 1,000 Hz for 180 s. Power spectral analysis was used to determine the appropriate sampling frequency. The time series were downsampled to 750, 500, 250, 100, 50, and 25 Hz to investigate the effect of different sampling frequency. Relative parameter consiste

Stress Response Analysis via Dynamic Entropy in EEG: Caregivers in View.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), stress can be defined as any type of alteration that causes physical, emotional, or psychological tension. A very important concept that is sometimes confused with stress is anxiety. The difference between stress and anxiety is that stress usually has an existing cause. Once that activator has passed, stress typically eases. In this respect, according to the American Psychiatric Association, anxiety is a normal response to stress and can even be advantageous in some circumstances. By contrast, anxiety disorders differ from temporary feelings of

Solving the Azobenzene Entropy Puzzle: Direct Evidence for Multi-State Reactivity.

A solution to the azobenzene "entropy puzzle" [ J. Phys.: Condens. Matter, 2017, 29, 314002] is provided. Previous computational studies of the thermal Z → E (back-)isomerization of azobenzene could not describe the experimentally observed large negative activation entropies. Here it is shown that the experimental results are only compatible with a more complicated multistate rotation mechanism that involves a triplet excited state. Using nonadiabatic transition state theory, close to perfect agreement is achieved between all calculated and experimental Eyring parameters. We also provide new e

Brain Entropy Study on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Using Resting-State fMRI.

Object: Brain entropy is a potential index in the diagnosis of mental diseases, but there are some differences in different brain entropy calculation, which may bring confusion and difficulties to the application of brain entropy. Based on the resting-state function magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) we analyzed the differences of the three main brain entropy in the statistical significance, including approximate entropy (ApEn), sample entropy (SampEn) and fuzzy entropy (FuzzyEn), and studied the physiological reasons behind the difference through comparing their performance on obsessive-compul

A high-density crowd state judgment model based on entropy theory.

A high-density crowd state is prone to cause large-scale crowd stampede accidents that seriously threaten the people's security and property. The key to preventing crowd congestion is to accurately predict the location and time of crowd events, particularly when there is a high density of people. In this paper, the entropy theory is used to characterize the state of a crowded system. The theoretical entropy Sr and the actual entropy S of the crowd system are obtained according to the area occupied by the different crowd state The maximum entropy value and the actual entropy value under differe

Area Entropy and Quantized Mass of Black Holes from Information Theory.

In this paper, we present a derivation of the black hole area entropy with the relationship between entropy and information. The curved space of a black hole allows objects to be imaged in the same way as camera lenses. The maximal information that a black hole can gain is limited by both the Compton wavelength of the object and the diameter of the black hole. When an object falls into a black hole, its information disappears due to the no-hair theorem, and the entropy of the black hole increases correspondingly. The area entropy of a black hole can thus be obtained, which indicates that the B

A Multiple Rényi Entropy Based Intrusion Detection System for Connected Vehicles.

In this paper, we propose an intrusion detection system based on the estimation of the Rényi entropy with multiple orders. The Rényi entropy is a generalized notion of entropy that includes the Shannon entropy and the min-entropy as special cases. In 2018, Kim proposed an efficient estimation method for the Rényi entropy with an arbitrary real order α . In this work, we utilize this method to construct a multiple order, Rényi entropy based intrusion detection system (IDS) for vehicular systems with various network connections. The proposed method estimates the Rényi entropies simultaneously wi

Phase lag entropy as a hypnotic depth indicator during propofol sedation.

Phase lag entropy, an electro-encephalography-based hypnotic depth indicator, calculates diversity in temporal patterns of phase relationship. We compared the performance of phase lag entropy with the bispectral index™ in 30 patients scheduled for elective surgery. We initiated a target-controlled infusion of propofol using the Schnider model, and assessed sedation levels using the Modified Observer's Assessment of Alertness/Sedation scale every 30 s with each stepwise increase in the effect-site propofol concentration. Phase lag entropy and bispectral index values were recorded. The correlati

Resolution of Murine Toxic Hepatic Injury Quantified With Ultrasound Entropy Metrics.

Image-based classification of liver disease generally lacks specificity for distinguishing between acute, resolvable injury and chronic irreversible injury. We propose that ultrasound radiofrequency data acquired in vivo from livers subjected to toxic drug injury can be analyzed with information theoretic detectors to derive entropy metrics, which classify a statistical distribution of pathologic scatterers that dissipate over time as livers heal. Here we exposed 38 C57BL/6 mice to carbon tetrachloride to cause liver damage, and imaged livers in vivo 1, 4, 8, 12 and 18 d after exposure with a

Fragmentation and high entropy of neonatal experience predict adolescent emotional outcome.

Vulnerability to emotional disorders including depression derives from interactions between genes and environment, especially during sensitive developmental periods. Across evolution, maternal care is a key source of environmental sensory signals to the developing brain, and a vast body of work has linked quantitative and qualitative aspects of maternal care to emotional outcome in children and animals. However, the fundamental properties of maternal signals, that promote advantageous vs pathological outcomes in the offspring, are unknown and have been a topic of intense study. We studied emot

Sparse kernel entropy component analysis for dimensionality reduction of neuroimaging data.

The neuroimaging data typically has extremely high dimensions. Therefore, dimensionality reduction is commonly used to extract discriminative features. Kernel entropy component analysis (KECA) is a newly developed data transformation method, where the key idea is to preserve the most estimated Renyi entropy of the input space data set via a kernel-based estimator. Despite its good performance, KECA still suffers from the problem of low computational efficiency for large-scale data. In this paper, we proposed a sparse KECA (SKECA) algorithm with the recursive divide-and-conquer based solution,

Detecting complexity abnormalities in dyslexia measuring Approximate Entropy of electroencephalographic signals.

Dyslexia constitutes a specific reading disability, a condition characterized by severe difficulty in the mastery of reading despite normal intelligence or adequate education. Electroencephalogram (EEG) signal may be able to play an important role in the diagnosis of dyslexia. The Approximate Entropy (ApEn) is a recently formulated statistical parameter used to quantify the regularity of a time series data of physiological signals. In this paper, we initially estimated the ApEn values in signals recorded from controls subjects and dyslectic children. These values were firstly used for the stat

Impact of General Anesthesia Guided by State Entropy (SE) and Response Entropy (RE) on Perioperative Stability in Elective Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Patients-A Prospective Observational Randomized Monocentric Study.

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is one of the most frequently performed interventions in general surgery departments. Some of the most important aims in achieving perioperative stability in these patients is diminishing the impact of general anesthesia on the hemodynamic stability and the optimization of anesthetic drug doses based on the individual clinical profile of each patient. The objective of this study is the evaluation of the impact, as monitored through entropy (both state entropy (SE) and response entropy (RE)), that the depth of anesthesia has on the hemodynamic stability, as well as

Metal Active-Site Engineering in High-Entropy Catalysts for Catalytic Applications.

High-entropy catalysts (HECs), including high-entropy alloys and high-entropy oxides, have emerged as a transformative class of catalytic materials owing to their exceptional compositional flexibility and entropy-stabilized structures. Unlike conventional catalysts, HECs possess a broad distribution of atomic configurations of surface-active sites that enable simultaneous modulation of reactants'/intermediates' adsorption and stabilization energetics, charge transfer, and reaction pathways. Such characteristics provide unique opportunities to overcome long-standing activity-selectivity-stabili
