A Three-Dimensional Interlocked Heterojunction Photoanode for Sustainable Metal Corrosion Control in Marine Environments.

The development of highly efficient and stable photoanodes is essential for advancing photoelectrochemical cathodic protection towards practical applications. Herein, a novel ternary sulfide heterojunction was engineered through the construction of a three-dimensional interlocked architecture of ZnIn2S4 on SnIn4S8 nanosheets via a sequential hydrothermal synthesis. This unique three-dimensional interlocked configuration creates an intimate interface and continuous charge transfer highways, effectively addressing the slow electron movement and poor interfacial contact that plague conventional p

Control within a virtual environment is correlated to functional outcomes when using a physical prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: Advances such as targeted muscle reinnervation and pattern recognition control may provide improved control of upper limb myoelectric prostheses, but evaluating user function remains challenging. Virtual environments are cost-effective and immersive tools that are increasingly used to provide practice and evaluate prosthesis control, but the relationship between virtual and physical outcomes-i.e., whether practice in a virtual environment translates to improved physical performance-is not understood. METHODS: Nine people with transhumeral amputations who previously had targeted mu

Pathogen-induced inflammatory environment controls effector and memory CD8+ T cell differentiation.

In response to infection, CD8(+) T cells integrate multiple signals and undergo an exponential increase in cell numbers. Simultaneously, a dynamic differentiation process occurs, resulting in the formation of short-lived effector cells (SLECs; CD127(low)KLRG1(high)) and memory precursor effector cells (CD127(high)KLRG1(low)) from an early effector cell that is CD127(low)KLRG1(low) in phenotype. CD8(+) T cell differentiation during vesicular stomatitis virus infection differed significantly than during Listeria monocytogenes infection with a substantial reduction in early effector cell differen

Multilingual home environment and specific language impairment: a case-control study in Chinese children.

Specific language impairment (SLI) is a common developmental disorder in young children. To investigate the association between multilingual home environment and SLI, we conducted a case-control study in Hong Kong Chinese children over a 4-year period in the Duchess of Kent Children's Hospital. Consecutive medical records of all new referrals below 5 years of age were reviewed and children diagnosed with SLI (case) were compared with those referred with other developmental and behavioural problems who had been assessed as having normal language and overall development (control) using the Griff

Control of flea populations in a simulated home environment model using lufenuron, imidacloprid or fipronil.

Control strategies were evaluated over a 6-month period in a home simulation model comprising a series of similar carpeted pens, housing matched groups of six cats, in which the life-cycle of the flea Ctenocephalides felis felis Bouche (Siphonaptera: Pulicidae) had been established. Additional adult fleas were placed on the cats at intervals to mimic acquisition of extraneous fleas from outside the home. Treatment strategies included a single subcutaneous deposition of injectable lufenuron supported by initial treatments with a short-acting insecticidal spray, or monthly topical applications o

Determinants of oesophageal 'alkaline' pH environment in controls and patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.

The determinants of the oesophageal alkaline pH environment are poorly understood. Saliva (pH 6.4-7.8) may be a major contributor, although some argue the importance of refluxed alkaline duodenal contents. Acid and alkaline reflux parameters were studied over 2 days in 30 subjects (control, oesophagitis and Barrett's patients; 10 each) using glass pH electrodes. In phase 1, one pH electrode was placed 1 cm below the upper oesophageal sphincter to assess the influence of saliva and the other 5 cm above the lower oesophageal sphincter. Phase 2 was identical except that one pH probe was 5 cm belo

LED Light-Quality Optimization to Enhance Shoot and Essential Oil Yield of Tagetes erecta L. in Controlled Environment.

This study evaluated the effects of light spectral quality on shoot yield and essential oil of Tagetes erecta L. cultivated in controlled growth chambers under three LED lighting treatments with different red, blue, and white wavelength ratios and a constant 16 h photoperiod for up to 101 days. The F2 treatment (5 red:1 blue) produced yields of fresh shoots, early blooming flowers, and oils of 1586 ± 164 g/m2, 569.77 ± 76.81 g/m2, and 307 ± 31.7 mg/m2, respectively. These values were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those of the F1 treatment (white:red-phosphor), and represented increases

Fatal Hemorrhagic Septicemia in Common Guitarfish (Rhinobatos rhinobatos) Caused by Photobacterium damselae Subsp. damselae in a Controlled Environment.

Elasmobranchs, including sharks and rays, are commonly housed in public aquariums due to their ecological significance and educational value. The common guitarfish (Rhinobatos rhinobatos), currently listed as 'Critically Endangered' by the IUCN, is particularly susceptible to population declines due to overfishing and bycatch. While generally considered robust, individuals in captivity may experience stress-related health issues, increasing their susceptibility to infectious diseases. This study investigates a mortality event affecting three 20-year-old guitarfish kept in a public aquarium. Th

Alcohol subjective responses in heavy drinkers: Measuring acute effects in the natural environment versus the controlled laboratory setting.

BACKGROUND: For decades, laboratory alcohol challenges have been the "gold standard" for measuring individual differences in alcohol's subjective effects. However, these approaches are expensive and labor-intensive, making them impractical for large-scale use. This study examined the reliability and validity of a new high-resolution EMA (HR-EMA) ambulatory approach to assessing alcohol use and subjective responses in drinkers' natural environments. METHODS: Participants were 83 young adult heavy social drinkers (58% male; mean ± SD age = 25.4 ± 2.6 years) who completed up to two smartphone-ba

Does enriched acoustic environment in humans abolish chronic tinnitus clinically and electrophysiologically? A double blind placebo controlled study.

Animal research has shown that loss of normal acoustic stimulation can increase spontaneous firing in the central auditory system and induce cortical map plasticity. Enriched acoustic environment after noise trauma prevents map plasticity and abolishes neural signs of tinnitus. In humans, the tinnitus spectrum overlaps with the area of hearing loss. Based on these findings it can be hypothesized that stimulating the auditory system by presenting music compensating specifically for the hearing loss might also suppress chronic tinnitus. To verify this hypothesis, a study was conducted in three g

Controlled Seeding of β-Amyloid Fibrillation Reveals Propagation of Structural Polymorphisms in Cellular Environments.

Molecular-level structural polymorphisms of β-amyloid (Aβ) aggregates in Alzheimer's disease patients are pathologically important. However, tracking the propagation and modulation of Aβ structural polymorphisms via ex vivo approaches remains challenging. The successful application of cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) in this area relies on the availability of morphologically distinct micrographs, which then enable unambiguous three-dimensional structural reconstruction of individual fibrillar polymorphs to achieve optimal resolution. As a complementary approach, solid-stat

Integrated PM-MOX-Thermal Sensing for Monitoring Bioaerosol Dynamics in Controlled Indoor Environments.

Indoor monitoring of biological contamination is essential for protecting cultural heritage and public health. However, conventional culture-based methods limit timely intervention. This study presents an affordable modular multisensor system for indirectly detecting airborne fungal contamination using Penicillium chrysogenum as a representative model organism and its environmental signatures. The proposed prototype integrates PMSA003I, BME688 and AMG8833 sensors and was evaluated under controlled environmental conditions. Biological ground truth was established using a volumetric inertial-imp

Crystal-environment control of excited-state reaction branching in 5-chloro-N-salicylideneaniline.

We investigated how crystal packing controls the photochromic reactivity of 5-chloro-N-salicylideneaniline (5CSA) by combining excited-state reaction-path analysis with ab initio molecular dynamics simulations for the isolated molecule and cluster models of its α- and β-phases. For the isolated molecule, the static pathway analysis revealed two competing relaxation channels near the S1 Franck-Condon region: an ESIPT pathway leading toward trans-keto formation through subsequent C-C twisting, and a competing C-N twist pathway leading toward twist-enol relaxation. The nonplanar α-phase showed br

AquaMaze: A Computer Vision-Based Framework for Automated Behavioral Analysis of Zebrafish in Controlled Environments.

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) have become a prominent model organism in behavioral neuroscience and pharmacological studies due to their genetic homology with humans and transparent physiology. Despite their increasing use, many laboratories still rely on manual or semi-automated tracking systems to assess behavior. There are programs commercially available, which are expensive and may not be possible to purchase for those researchers with a limited budget. Here, we introduce AquaMaze, a standalone, open-source desktop application built with PyQt5 and OpenCV, designed for real-time and post-hoc vide

Integrated monitoring of enveloped viruses in hospital environments: Detection, persistence, and implications for infection control.

Enveloped viruses, including coronaviruses, influenza viruses, and others, pose significant public health risks due to their ability to persist in various environments. This study investigates the persistence of enveloped viruses, particularly SARS-CoV-2, in three key environments: air, surfaces, and wastewater, with a focus on hospital settings. We present a systematic review of the literature on the environmental persistence of these viruses, complemented by a case study conducted in two reference hospitals in northern Iran. A total of 72 wastewater samples, 46 air samples, and 92 surface sa
