The Association between Changes in Built Environment and Changes in Walking among Older Women in Portland, Oregon.

Some cross-sectional evidence suggests that the objectively measured built environment can encourage walking among older adults. We examined the associations between objectively measured built environment with change in self-reported walking among older women by using data from the Study of Osteoporotic Fractures (SOF). We evaluated the longitudinal associations between built environment characteristics and walking among 1253 older women (median age = 71 years) in Portland, Oregon using generalized estimating equation models. Built environment characteristics included baseline values and longi

Means restriction for the prevention of suicide by jumping.

BACKGROUND: Jumping from a height is an uncommon but lethal means of suicide. Restricting access to means is an important universal or population-based approach to suicide prevention with clear evidence of its effectiveness. However, the evidence with respect to means restriction for the prevention of suicide by jumping is not well established. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to restrict the availability of, or access to, means of suicide by jumping. These include the use of physical barriers, fencing or safety nets at frequently-used jumping sites, or restriction o

Associations between perceived natural environmental features and physical activity intention: the mediating roles of perceived safety and perceived environmental restorativeness.

BACKGROUND: Natural environments may support physical activity not only by providing opportunities for movement but also by shaping psychological appraisals of safety and restoration. Guided by prospect-refuge theory, this study distinguished prospect, threat-related refuge, and protective refuge. OBJECTIVE: We examined whether perceived safety and perceived environmental restorativeness statistically mediated the associations between these perceived features and physical activity intention. METHODS: A image-based randomized online survey experiment was conducted among 1,439 young adults. Pa

Construction and improvement strategies of an age-friendly evaluation system for public spaces in affordable housing communities: a case study of Shenzhen.

Characterized by early construction periods, as the concentration of low-income populations and a high level of aging, affordable housing communities face prominent challenges such as incongruence between age-friendly construction and the needs of the older adult population. It is urgent to provide pathways and tools for identifying age-friendly issues and optimizing the built environment. The systematic evaluation of age-friendly communities serves as the foundation for implementing intervention measures by developers. Therefore, the construction of a scientifically systematic evaluation syst

Building running-friendly cities: effects of streetscapes on running using 9.73 million fitness tracker data in Shanghai, China.

The association between built environment and physical activity has been recognized. However, how and to what extent microscale streetscapes are related to running activity remains underexplored, partly due to the lack of running data in large urban areas. Moreover, few studies have examined the interactive effects of macroscale built environment and microscale streetscapes. This study examines the main and interactive effects of the two-level environments on running intensity, using 9.73 million fitness tracker data from Keep in Shanghai, China. Results of spatial error model showed that: 1)

Assessing physical-exercise suitability in an urban canal corridor: evidence from the Cangzhou reach of China's Grand Canal.

INTRODUCTION: River corridors along the Grand Canal provide potential settings for outdoor physical exercise; however, existing assessment tools do not sufficiently address the combined requirements of longitudinal continuity, waterside accessibility, safety, comfort, and heritage-sensitive spatial conditions in linear canal corridors. METHODS: This study assessed 13 sample sites within a 24-km urban reach of the Grand Canal in Cangzhou, China. Based on field surveys, questionnaires, expert consultation, and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), an evaluation system was developed from four cr

Night running and night cycling: a review of sociological drivers, health benefits, and their interaction with urban green spaces.

This study investigates the rising trends, sociological drivers, health benefits, and the interaction of night running and night cycling with urban green spaces. Findings indicate that night running and night cycling are mainly driven by increased health awareness, changes in work patterns, social media promotion, and urban economic development. Physiologically, night running and cycling enhance cardiovascular function, alleviate stress, and improve sleep. However, air pollution, inadequate infrastructure, and safety concerns limit the sustainability of these activities. Urban green spaces pla

Vehicle trajectory fractal theory for macro-level highway crash rate analysis.

Vehicle trajectory data can reveal actual driving behavior patterns reflected by different road geometric designs, providing important insights for road safety analysis and improvements. This study aims to is to explore the correlation between vehicle trajectory fractal dimension (FD) and highway crash rate (CR) using large-scale telematics trajectory data. Specifically, we propose three methods to measure the FD of vehicle trajectories, and developed fractal parameter estimation technology. The results show that FD differences between road segments have a statistically significant effect on C

Automatic fall monitoring: a review.

Falls and fall-related injuries are major incidents, especially for elderly people, which often mark the onset of major deterioration of health. More than one-third of home-dwelling people aged 65 or above and two-thirds of those in residential care fall once or more each year. Reliable fall detection, as well as prevention, is an important research topic for monitoring elderly living alone in residential or hospital units. The aim of this study is to review the existing fall detection systems and some of the key research challenges faced by the research community in this field. We categorize

Gambling machine annexes as enabling spaces for addictive engagement.

The widespread proliferation of electronic gambling machines and improvements to their design have contributed to rising levels of gambling-related harm including harms associated with addictive behaviour and other impacts on health and wellbeing. Research into their addictive potential has focused mainly on the interface between gamblers and the machines themselves. We shift the focus onto the spatial contexts, the rooms and the venues, in which gambling machines are positioned. By examining a series of common layouts we identify the division of venues into two main areas: one for the main so

The effectiveness of structural interventions at suicide hotspots: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Certain sites have gained notoriety as 'hotspots' for suicide by jumping. Structural interventions (e.g. barriers and safety nets) have been installed at some of these sites. Individual studies examining the effectiveness of these interventions have been underpowered. METHOD: We conducted a meta-analysis, pooling data from nine studies. RESULTS: Following the interventions, there was an 86% reduction in jumping suicides per year at the sites in question (95% CI 79% to 91%). There was a 44% increase in jumping suicides per year at nearby sites (95% CI 15% to 81%), but the net gain
