The sleep justice study - a prospective cohort study assessing sleep as a cardiometabolic risk factor after incarceration: a protocol paper.

BACKGROUND: An estimated 11 million individuals are released from U.S. jails and prisons each year. Individuals with a history of incarceration have higher rates of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and mortality compared to the general population, especially in the weeks following release from carceral facilities. Healthy sleep, associated with cardiovascular health, is an underexplored factor in the epidemiology of CVD in this population. Incarcerated people may have unique individual, environmental, and institutional policy-level reasons for being sleep deficient. The social and physical

A scalable climate health justice assessment model.

This paper introduces a scalable "climate health justice" model for assessing and projecting incidence, treatment costs, and sociospatial disparities for diseases with well-documented climate change linkages. The model is designed to employ low-cost secondary data, and it is rooted in a perspective that merges normative environmental justice concerns with theoretical grounding in health inequalities. Since the model employs International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) disease codes, it is transferable to other contexts, appropriate for use across sp

Local Economic Conditions Affect Aedes albopictus Management.

Invasive mosquitoes are an emerging public health issue, as many species are competent vectors for pathogens. We assessed how multiple environmental and socio-economic factors affected the engagement of municipalities in Italy (n = 7679) in actions against Aedes albopictus, an invasive mosquito affecting human health and well-being, between 2000 and 2020. We collected information about mosquito control from official documents and municipal websites and modeled the role played by multiple environmental and socioeconomic factors characterizing each municipality through the random forest algorith

Beyond the body: Social, structural, and environmental infertility.

Infertility is often thought of as a disease of the male or female reproductive system defined by the failure to achieve a pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse. However, as fertility rates rapidly decline worldwide, we observe that the inability to conceive and have children stems not only from anatomical, physiological, or genetic conditions within the body but also from social, structural, and environmental conditions in society. Drawing on a wide array of international and interdisciplinary scholarship, this article rethinks infertility by focusing on

Invited Commentary: There's No Place Like Home-Integrating a Place-Based Approach to Understanding Sleep.

Light exposure at night impedes sleep and shifts the circadian clock. An extensive body of literature has linked sleep deprivation and circadian misalignment with cardiac disease, cancer, mental health disorders, and other chronic illnesses, as well as more immediate risks, such as motor vehicle crashes and occupational injuries. In this issue of the Journal, Zhong et al. (Am J Epidemiol. 2022;191(9):1532-1539) build on this literature, finding that in a cohort of 50,000 California teachers, artificial light at night, noise, green space, and air pollution were all associated with sleep disturb

Waste-ing antibiotics: Antimicrobial resistance, environmental pollution and unsettled science in the governance of pharmaceutical manufacturing.

This paper analyses the role of scientific evidence in environmental health governance following recognition of the environment's role in the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). It recounts events surrounding the Government of India's attempt to regulate antibiotic waste in the environment from pharmaceutical manufacturing in relation to a production site in north India where occupation, living conditions, and waste disposal practices drive unequal distributions of exposure. Drawing on qualitative findings from a research study (2020-2024) together with legal records and other seconda

Climate change-related weather emergencies, aging and inequalities among racialized older adults: An intersectional climate justice framework informed scoping review.

As global aging accelerates alongside intensifying climate disruptions, older adults face growing exposure to extreme weather events that threaten their health and well-being. Yet, the experiences of racialized older adults, categorized as those who are non-White or non-Indigenous who often inhabit the intersection of social and ecological shaped by social marginalization, economic disadvantage, and other factors remain insufficiently understood. Guided by an Intersectional Climate Justice lens, this scoping review examined how racialized older adults across diverse contexts experience and res

Predictive value of individual social risk versus neighborhood-level social vulnerability for trauma outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood-level indices serve as proxies for social risk in clinical research, although self-reported social determinants of health may better identify vulnerable patients, especially in the context of traumatic injury. We hypothesized that self-reported social determinants of health have stronger predictive value for short-term trauma outcomes than neighborhood aggregates. METHODS: Adult inpatients with trauma tic injury (2020-2024) who completed hospital-administered social determinants of health screeners were assigned Social Vulnerability Index, Area Deprivation Index, and

Recommendations for Clinicians to Combat Environmental Disparities in Pediatric Asthma: A Review.

TOPIC IMPORTANCE: Asthma is a common and complex lung disease in children, with disproportionally higher prevalence and related adverse outcomes among children in racial and ethnic minority groups and of lower socioeconomic position. Environmental factors, including unhealthy housing and school-based exposures, can contribute to increased asthma morbidity and widening disparities. This underscores a significant environmental justice issue and suggests the need for clinical interventions to reduce sources of environmental exposures and ultimately diminish the observed disparities in childhood a

Identifying individual and environmental predictors of opioid and psychostimulant use among adolescents and young adults following outpatient treatment.

BACKGROUND: The United States (US) continues to grapple with a drug overdose crisis. While opioids remain the main driver of overdose deaths, deaths involving psychostimulants such as methamphetamine are increasing with and without opioid involvement. Recent treatment admission data reflect overdose fatality trends suggesting greater psychostimulant use, both alone and in combination with opioids. Adolescents and young adults are particularly vulnerable with generational trends showing that these populations have particularly high relapse rates following treatment. METHODS: We assessed demogr

Deconstructing Trauma: How Military Experiences Affect Veteran Prison Misconduct.

Military veterans may exhibit a multitude of criminogenic risk factors that can result in contact with the criminal justice system. These include mental health disorders, substance abuse issues, antisocial cognitions, family or marital dysfunction, homelessness, and unemployment. Although prior research has examined these risks as they correspond to arrest, court processing, or incarceration, far fewer studies have investigated the context of veterans’ service histories inside prisons or how they relate to institutional infractions and misconduct. Further specificity into the continuity of mal

Invisible Hands Behind Clean Hands: Procurement Justice, Materiality, and Nursing Praxis.

Nursing ethics has long taken the bedside encounter as the moral center of practice. Yet this focus becomes incomplete when the material conditions of care are treated as ethically external to nursing itself. Ordinary clinical supplies such as gloves, masks, gowns, syringes, drapes, and linens are commonly understood as neutral instruments of safe and competent care. This paper argues that such neutrality is philosophically misleading. The materials through which nursing is enacted are embedded in global systems of labor, extraction, manufacture, circulation, use, and disposal that may involve

[Action-research in artisanal fishing communities affected by the oil spill crime disaster].

The aim of this article is to describe the experience of researchers in applying action research as a methodological tool in territories of artisanal fishing affected by the oil disaster that occurred in 2019 on the Northeast coast of Brazil. This is a critical-reflective hermeneutic study, based on the analysis of researchers' experiences reports, and field diaries developed during research activities conducted between 2021 and 2023. Immersing oneself in reality and territorializing knowledge beyond an epistemic matter contributes to the dialogical process in territories, strengthening aspect

Care, not incarceration: exploring the carcerality of fisheries enforcement and potential decolonial futures in Hawai'i.

Current U.S. environmental management paradigms default to enforcement mechanisms that feed into the prison industrial complex, such as fines and jailing. To avoid contributing to and reinforcing mass incarceration and militarism, environmental management systems need to be transformed towards non-carceral forms. Additionally, working towards Indigenous sovereignty and decolonization, requires the strengthening of Indigenous relations with and governance over the land under the respective paradigms of Indigenous communities. This paper uses Hawai'i state fisheries law and programmatic efforts

Mining and malaria in the Brazilian Amazon and in the Yanomami indigenous land.

Illegal mining expanded in the Brazilian Amazon since 2018, leading to increases in malaria among indigenous populations, particularly the Yanomami. We describe the temporal and spatial pattern of malaria and mining in indigenous lands and quantify the impact of mining on malaria among the Yanomami. We estimate that a 1% increase in the annual mining area was associated with a 24% (95% CrI: 17%, 32%) increase in monthly malaria cases in the Yanomami. Also, malaria cases in 2022 in the Yanomami were likely underreported by 83%, and an estimated excess of 102,870 malaria cases occurred from 2018

Air pollution and chronic respiratory diseases: a narrative review including a case study in Campania (Italy).

Air pollution is a major public health risk, contributing significantly to the global burden of chronic respiratory diseases. Chronic exposure to pollutants such as PM2.5, PM10, NO₂, and O₃ is associated with documented pathogenetic mechanisms, including oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, epithelial damage, and airway remodeling, which promote the development of respiratory diseases such as asthma, COPD, and cardiovascular disease. This review examines epidemiological data at the national and regional levels, focusing on Campania, one of the Italian regions most exposed to air pollution l

Remediation of Bacillus anthracis contamination in the U.S. Department of Justice mail facility.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) mail facility in Landover, Maryland, was contaminated with Bacillus anthracis spores as a result of the 2001 anthrax bioterrorism attacks through the U.S. postal system. Surface environmental sampling within the facility indicated that the contamination was due to receipt of mail that had come in contact with Bacillus anthracis spores from the source letters at the Brentwood postal facility in Washington, DC. The DOJ adopted a two-pronged approach for remediating the facility, using aqueous chlorine dioxide to decontaminate hard, nonporous surfaces and para

PM2.5 anomaly detection for exceptional event demonstrations: A Texas case study.

The shifting frontiers of air pollution emission sources contribute to stagnation or reversal of air quality gains across the United States (US). The frequency and possible duration of Exceptional Events - driven primarily by wildfires and dust storms - have significantly increased in the US over the past decade. Combined with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) final rule strengthening primary annual National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for PM2.5 by 25%, communities will need to reevaluate domestic and international sources of PM2.5.This study applies the Isolation Forest m

The tragedy of Tauccamarca: a human rights perspective on the pesticide poisoning deaths of 4 children in the Peruvian Andes.

The pesticide poisoning deaths of 24 children in an isolated Peruvian village make a compelling case that corporate accountability for pesticide poisonings in the developing south should be examined from a human rights perspective. Highly toxic pesticides cannot be used safely under prevailing socioeconomic conditions. The industry asserts that the deaths of these children were accidental, blaming misuse. Tragedies such as these poisonings are not accidents, but foreseeable, and therefore preventable. Sales of highly toxic pesticides that cause repeated and predictable poisonings violate the f

Advances and future needs for modelling sustainable and just food systems transformations.

Food systems underpin human health, livelihoods, and environmental sustainability; yet, they remain major contributors to climate change, biodiversity loss, and inequity. Building on the 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission on healthy, sustainable, and just food systems, a special collection of papers in The Lancet Planetary Health highlights emerging frontiers for research and modelling. Across models, dietary change remains the most effective lever for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and land-use pressure from food production, although affordability and nutritional adequacy challenges persist, parti
