Symptomatic ependymal cysts of the perimesencephalic and cerebello-pontine angle cisterns.

Primary intracranial ependymal cysts are extremely rare. These are congenital, benign ependyma lined, commonly intraparenchymal and uncommonly extraparenchymal cysts in leptomeningeal location of variable size seen in the adult life. The authors report two cases of symptomatic ependymal cysts: one in the perimesencephalic cistern in a 10-month-old infant presenting with delayed mile stones and another in the cerebello-pontine cistern in a morbidly obese 35-year-old woman with known benign intracranial hypertension now presenting with hemifacial spasm. Neurosurgical intervention was curative in

Naegleria australiensis ssp. italica: experimental study in mice.

A subspecies of Naegleria australiensis, N. australiensis italica, pathogenic for mice, was recently isolated and identified from an Italian thermal spa. We describe the histopathological changes of the central nervous system with experimental infection of albino mice. The histopathological patterns are intermediate to those seen with infection caused by N. fowleri and N. australiensis or Acanthamoeba spp. An acute inflammatory reaction was present within the choroid plexus, ependyma, midbrain, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. Occasional single amebic trophozoites were found within some microabs

Degeneration of serotonin-specific neurons in the brain in experimental Trypanosoma brucei infection.

ORMEROD and HUSSEIN (1986) have shown that an intracellular stage of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense causes the destruction of ependymal cells lining the ventricles of the brain. The ventricular ependymal cells are intimately associated with a plexus of nerves that react specifically with monoclonal antibody raised against serotonin. We have shown that in areas where the ependyma is damaged, the supraependymal plexus also undergoes destruction and that retrograde degeneration of the neuron as far as the dorsal raphe nucleus also occurs. Although the work is as yet unfinished, we suggest that so

[Brain edema after surgery of lateral ventricle tumors].

We reported five cases of lateral ventricle tumors all of which developed severe brain edema between 9 days and 8 years after surgery. Follow-up study with serial computed tomography before and after surgery were presented. Based on a review of the literature, a possible causal mechanism is suggested: 1) The cerebrospinal fluid diffuses into the white matter through the surgically damaged ependyma and caused severe postoperative edema; and 2) surgical blockade of the flow of cerebral interstitial fluid to drain into the fenestrated vessels of the choroid plexus and other periventricular areas

Acute injections of opiate peptides into the rat cerebral ventricle: a macrophage-like cellular response.

Opiate peptides (beta-endorphin, alpha-endorphin or met-enkephalin) were administered to the lateral cerebral ventricle of adult male rats via single injection into implanted cannulas. Scanning EM of the third ventricle above the median eminence of animals sacrificed approximately one hour after peptide injection revealed numerous free cells above the ependyma. Beta-endorphin induced a significantly greater cellular response than other peptides or control injections. Transmission EM demonstrated that the cells had morphologic characteristics of macrophages. Opiate peptides in cerebrospinal flu

Streptococcus pneumoniae-induced inhibition of rat ependymal cilia is attenuated by antipneumolysin antibody.

Ciliated ependymal cells line the ventricular surfaces and aqueducts of the brain. In ex vivo experiments, pneumolysin caused rapid inhibition of the ependymal ciliary beat frequency and caused ependymal cell disruption. Wild-type pneumococci and pneumococci deficient in pneumolysin caused ciliary slowing, but penicillin lysis of wild-type, not pneumolysin-deficient, pneumococci increased the extent of ciliary inhibition. This effect was abolished by antipneumolysin antibody. Ependymal ciliary stasis by purified pneumolysin was also blocked by the addition of antipneumolysin monoclonal antibod

[Ultrastructure of the vascular plexus villi in the lateral cerebral ventricle of the cat].

As demonstrates a light and electron microscopic investigation of the villi in the vascular plexuses of the cat cerebral lateral ventricles, the cells of the unilayer epithelium covering their surface differ from the cells covering the cerebral meningitis and from the ependymocytes. The electron microscopic investigation has demonstrated that epithelium covering the villi of the vascular plexuses is not homogenous: 3 main types of the cells are revealed in it. Ultrastructure of the connective tissue stroma of the vascular plexuses, their microcirculatory bed are also not identical to the corre

[Giant petrosal meningioma invading the fourth ventricle: total removal of a recurrent tumor after eighteen years. Neurosurgical nuances. Case report and literature review].

The authors present a patient and neurosurgical nuances of total resection of recurrent meningioma of posterior surface of petrous bone 65´35´30 mm. The tumor captured two critical zones of posterior cranial fossa with unusual frontal growth and spread from the surface of petrous bone to the fourth ventricle. The neoplasm filled the ventricle without lesion of ependyma. Extensive fibrous meningioma of posterior surface of petrous bone was totally excised 18 years ago. MRI was annually carried out for 5 years. Surgical nuances that ensured total extraction of tumor without cytoreduction were as

Ependymal brain cyst with posterior cerebral artery infarct.

Primary intracranial ependymal cysts are congenital, benign, ependyma-lined cysts rarely seen in the pediatric age group. The authors report such a case of intracranial fronto-parietal ependymal cyst in a 3 y-old girl. Computed tomography showed a large cystic lesion which was not in communication with the ventricular system and was associated with ipsilateral posterior cerebral artery infarct and raised intracranial pressure causing midline shift. A differential diagnosis of the commoner arachnoid, hydatid or porencephalic cyst was considered. Surgical removal to decompress the brain was done

Brain heterotopia and anencephaly.

This report describes the finding of nodular collections of heterotopic brain tissue in the lungs of a stillborn anencephalic infant. Immunoperoxidase staining was performed on the nodules and on the neural tissue found at the infant's cranial defect, for neuron-specific enolase, glial-fibrillary acidic protein, carcinoembryonic antigen, and epithelial membrane antigen. The nodules were shown to consist of neurons and neuroglia. Epithelium-lined channels within the nodules were shown to have the same staining characteristics as bronchi and bronchioles in the lung, and to be different from epen

Experimental pneumovirus infections. 2. Hydrocephalus of hamsters and mice due to infection with human respiratory syncytial virus (RS).

Respiratory syncytial virus (RS) injected into suckling hamsters and mice via the cerebral route induced hydrocephalus in 35% of the animals. The pathogenesis of the condition has been examined by light microscopy, immunofluorescence, and virus isolation. Infection of leptomeninges and ependyma was revealed by immunofluorescence of virus-specific antigens between Days 3 and 7 after inoculation. Histologically, eosinophilic inclusion bodies were visible within the cytoplasma of ependymal and meningeal cells. A patent aqueduct was observed in all hydrocephalic animals but one. These observations

Scanning and transmission electron microscopy of intraventricular dendrite terminals of hypothalamic cerebrospinal fluid contacting neurons in Triturus vulgaris.

A scanning (SEM) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) study of the ventricular wall of the hypothalamus of Triturus vulgaris was performed with special regard to the intraventricular dendrite terminals of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) contacting neurons of the preoptic area (magnocellular and parvocellular preoptic nuclei), the infundibular lobe (anterior periventricular nucleus, infundibular nucleus), and the paraventricular organ. In the preoptic area and infundibular lobe, the terminals were knob-like or club-shaped, of various sizes (diameter about 0,5 to 3,0 micrometer) and located

An eye on the future for defeating hydrocephalus, ciliary dyskinesia-related hydrocephalus: review article.

Congenital hydrocephalus affects approximately one in 1000 newborn children and is fatal in approximately 50% of untreated cases. The currently known management protocols usually necessitate multiple interventions and long-term use of healthcare resources due to a relatively high incidence of complications, and many of them mostly provide a treatment of the effect rather than the cause of cerebrospinal fluid flow reduction or outflow obstruction. Future studies discussing etiology specific hydrocephalus alternative treatments are needed. We systematically reviewed the available literature on t

Global DNA Methylation and Histone Posttranslational Modifications in Human and Nonhuman Primate Brain in Association with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure.

BACKGROUND: Based upon experimental animal studies, the neurodevelopmental abnormalities associated with prenatal alcohol exposure (PNAE)/fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) have been attributed, at least in part, to epigenetic modifications. However, there are no direct analyses of human brain tissue. METHODS: Immunohistochemical detection of global epigenetic markers was performed on temporal lobe samples of autopsied fetuses and infants with documented PNAE. They were compared to age-, sex-, and postmortem delay-matched control cases (18 pairs; 20 to 70.5 weeks postconception). Temporal

[The ependymal lining of the median eminence in goats].

Ependymal epithelium of eminentia mediana in goats, examined under a light microscope, was found to be formed by beta 2 tanycytes, basal processes reaching the surface of zona externa and bifurcating in zona interna. The thickest is zona interna, consisting of dense fibres of different arrangement. A scanning electrone microscope revealed that the structure of the ependymal surface of eminentia mediana in goats depends on the phase of sexual activity of a given individual. In female and male animals the findings are almost identical (ependymoresorption is prevailing) in the period of quiescenc

Megalencephaly with formation of Rosenthal fibers in symmetric subependymal gliomatous proliferations: clinicopathologic report.

Clinical and neuropathologic observations are reported concerning a girl with retarded psychomotor development accompanied with a steady increase in the volume of the cranium and brain, tetraparesis, and a serious epileptic syndrome resulting in death at the age of 13 years. The neuropathologic study revealed a marked megalencephaly and the presence of two bilateral and symmetric areas of atypical glial proliferation, corresponding with the optostriatal groove, with endoventricular protrusion: in this region the histologic findings gave evidence of a tapetum of Rosenthal fibers. Discussion is

The pathology of experimental obstructive hydrocephalus. A scanning electron microscopic study.

Obstructive hydrocephalus was produced in 14-day old rabbits by injection of kaolin into the cisterna magna. The ependymal lining was studied by scanning electron microscopy. Marked hydrocephalus was present 1 or 2 weeks after the kaolin injection. The ependymal lining adapted remarkably well to the rapid expansion by increasing the surface area of the ependymal cells. No breaks or denudement of the ependymal lining was observed except at the sites of ruptured ventricular synechiae. Generally, these findings confirm previous light and electron microscopic observations on the same model (Torvik

Complex imaging features of accidental cerebral intraventricular gadolinium administration.

Gadolinium diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (Gd-DTPA) is a contrast agent commonly used for enhancing MRI. In this paper, the authors report on 2 cases of postoperative inadvertent administration of Gd-DTPA directly into a ventriculostomy tubing side port that was mistaken for intravenous tubing. Both cases demonstrated a low signal on MRI throughout the ventricular system and dependent portions of the subarachnoid spaces, which was originally believed to be CSF with areas of T1 shortening in the nondependent portions of the subarachnoid spaces, and misinterpreted as basal leptomeningeal en

The expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I antigens in the brain differs markedly in acute and persistent infections with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV).

Intracranial inoculation of immunocompetent mice with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) induces a fatal neurologic illness. In this disease a marked increase in MHC class I expression was found, closely associated with viral antigens and inflammatory infiltrates, in meninges, choroid plexus and ventricular ependyma but not within the brain parenchyma. Immunosuppression prevented MHC induction. Mice inoculated at birth had persistent infections, with LCMV antigens found primarily in neurons, but no inflammatory cells or focal increase in MHC class I. Failure of infected neurons to expre

Intracranial Dural Parafalcine Chondroma: Case Report and Systematic Review of the Literature.

Intracranial chondromas are rare, benign neoplasms representing only 0.2%-0.3% of neoplastic intracranial lesions. They commonly originate from the skull base but can infrequently arise from the falx, convexity dura, or ventricular ependyma. Diagnosis requires histopathologic confirmation, as patients present with nonspecific symptoms related to mass effect, and imaging characteristics often resemble meningiomas, oligodendrogliomas, and vascular malformations. We describe the case of a patient harboring a parafalcine dural chondroma that was discovered incidentally and was managed surgically a
