Supratentorial cortical ependymoma: report of three cases.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Extraventricular ependymomas account for 50% of supratentorial ependymomas. Some tumors may extend to the gray matter reaching the pial surface, but pure cortical ependymomas are uncommon. Here, we report three patients with supratentorial intracortical ependymoma. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We reviewed the clinicopathological findings of all patients operated on for ependymomas at the Bellaria Hospital during an 11-year period and found three lesions described as cortical ependymomas. The three lesions represented 2.5% of all ependymal tumors and 21.4% of supratentorial

Supratentorial desmoplastic ependymoma with giant ependymal rosettes.

We report a case of a 22-year-old female who presented with a solid tumor in the frontal lobe having no continuity with the wall of the lateral ventricle. The tumor was excised. The patient has been free from clinical symptoms and tumor recurrence for over nine years. Microscopically, the tumor was composed of extremely large ependymal true rosettes, resembling medulloepithelioma, and thick fibrous septa, which were surrounded by thick reactive gliosis. There were no histological signs of malignancy. In our case, the tumor is assumed to be a variant of gliofibroma for which we propose the term

Extraneural metastasizing ependymoma of the spinal cord.

This paper reports a case of the rare entity of an extraneural metastasizing ependymoma of the spinal cord. The tumor which arose in the conus medullaris and in the cauda equina was first diagnosed in 1956 when a thoracolumbar myeloresection was performed. At autopsy, 40 years after the primary diagnosis, a massive local tumor recurrence with extraneural metastases in the lungs, the pleura, the liver, and the thoracal and abdominal lymph nodes were found. Immunohistochemical stains of the extraneural metastases showed a strong cytoplasmatic expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP).

Supratentorial giant cell ependymoma: a case report.

Ependymomas are neoplasms of the central nervous system that are capable of demonstrating remarkably heterogeneous histologic features. These tumors originate from ependymal cells lining the ventricles, the choroid plexus, the central canal of the spinal cord, and the filum terminale, so they are therefore seen throughout the neuraxis. We describe the case of a 26-year-old man who experienced a 3-week history of right-sided numbness and a 1-week history of worsening bifrontal headache. Computed tomographic scanning and magnetic resonance imaging of his head demonstrated an irregularly enhancin

Treatment of intracranial ependymoma by surgery alone.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the safety of deferring radiotherapy in pediatric intracranial ependymoma following a radiographically confirmed gross total resection in patients with localized disease. METHODS: Children over age 3 were recruited prospectively from 1990 to 1997, following a surgical impression and radiologic confirmation of a gross total resection of an intracranial ependymoma. RESULTS: 10/32 cases of intracranial ependymomas were both eligible and gave consent. 7 remain free of disease without further intervention. 3 recurred, 2 were salvaged with surgery and radio

Magnetic resonance imaging of a mediastinal ependymoma.

Ependymomas typically occur in the brain and spinal cord, and represent 5% and 16% of primary intracranial and spinal cord tumors respectively. Ependymomas arising outside the central nervous systems are uncommon and when they do occur are usually seen in the sacrococcygeal region. Other reported sites include the pelvis, spinal nerve roots, and lung. An extraspinal mediastinal ependymoma is a rare occurrence, with only two previously reported cases to our knowledge. In both instances, the lesion arose in the posterior mediastinum, and were imaged with either chest radiographs alone or chest r

Production and characterization of two ependymoma xenografts.

Childhood ependymomas exhibit epidemiologic, anatomic, histologic, and biologic features and distinguish them from other gliomas. Because of their propensity to grow in functionally sensitive regions of the brain, adequate tumor sampling for basic and therapeutic research is limited. We have established xenografts in both subcutaneous and intracranial nude mouse systems (D528 EP-X, D612 EP-X) from the ependymomas of two nonrelated children. Median subcutaneous growth rates (reported in days to grow from 200 mm3 to 1000 mm3) are 82 days for D528 EP-X (n = 10) and 50 days for D612 EP-X (n = 10).

Significance of molecular classification of ependymomas: C11orf95-RELA fusion-negative supratentorial ependymomas are a heterogeneous group of tumors.

Extensive molecular analyses of ependymal tumors have revealed that supratentorial and posterior fossa ependymomas have distinct molecular profiles and are likely to be different diseases. The presence of C11orf95-RELA fusion genes in a subset of supratentorial ependymomas (ST-EPN) indicated the existence of molecular subgroups. However, the pathogenesis of RELA fusion-negative ependymomas remains elusive. To investigate the molecular pathogenesis of these tumors and validate the molecular classification of ependymal tumors, we conducted thorough molecular analyses of 113 locally diagnosed epe

Giant intradural intramedullary spinal ependymoma: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Spinal ependymomas are the most common intramedullary spinal cord tumors in adults but rarely span multiple vertebral segments. Giant intradural intramedullary spinal ependymomas are exceedingly rare and pose diagnostic and surgical challenges due to their size and location. OBSERVATIONS: The authors report the case of a 31-year-old female who presented with progressive neck pain, lower extremity weakness, and sensory deficits. MRI revealed a large intramedullary lesion extending 11 spinal levels from C1 to T4. Gross-total en bloc resection of a 16-cm intramedullary ependymoma was

Thoracolumbar Extramedullary Myxopapillary Ependymoma: A Rare Case.

An intradural extramedullary myxopapillary ependymoma is a rare spinal cord tumor found in the thoracolumbar region of the spine. In this case report, we describe this case and review the various aspects of ependymomas. There are different types of ependymomas based on their location and histopathological appearance. Myxopapillary ependymoma is a non-invasive, slow-growing benign tumor that can present as a simple complaint of lower back pain to a severe stage like paraplegia.

Anaplastic ependymoma metastases though a ventriculoperitoneal shunt.

Ependymomas are rare glial tumors that comprise 10% of intracranial pediatric malignancies. Primary central nervous system malignancies can rarely metastasize extracranially. When metastases occur, it usually does so in the setting of surgical manipulation of the central nervous system and can spread through the blood, lymph, or artificial means, for example, a ventriculoperitoneal shunt. We describe the presentation and progression of an 18-month-old boy diagnosed with an ependymoma. Initially managed with surgery, radiation, and ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement for symptomatic hydrocepha

A case of bi-focal mediastinal ependymoma.

Ependymomas are tumors located in the central nervous system, mostly in the brain and spinal cord. This tumor is rarely seen as a primary mediastinal location. The aim of this study is to discuss this rare pathology in the clinical course of an unusual case. A 47-year-old female patient was referred to our clinic with the complaint of back and shoulder pain, via VATS posterior mediastinum located paravertebral mass excision was performed. The pathology reported as ependymoma. Two years later, CT scans of the routine control showed the well-defined mass in anterior mediastinum. The SUVmax of th

Molecular predictive and prognostic factors in ependymoma.

An ependymoma is an uncommon glial tumor, which arises from different parts of the neuroaxis. Considerable variation in presentation and survival in tumors in different locations after an optimum treatment indicates inherent molecular and genetic differences in tumorigenesis between them. A number of genetic aberrations have been identified to distinctly characterize different subgroups of ependymomas that include a posterior fossa tumor, a supratentorial tumor, and a pediatric tumor. These different groups have substantial genetic alterations, and also distinct demography, clinical characteri
