Valvular Heart Disease Epidemiology.

Valvular heart disease is a rapidly growing cause of global cardiovascular morbidity and mortality with diverse and evolving geographic distribution. The prevalence of rheumatic heart disease, the most common valvular heart disease (affecting approximately 41 million people), has been rising in developing nations, likely due to the expansion of the young adult population and the decrease in premature mortality that has resulted from improved access to antibiotics, microbiological testing, and echocardiography. Rheumatic heart disease has also been rising among the impoverished and, often, indi

Epidemiology of Lyme Disease.

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne illness in North America and Europe. The etiologic agent, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, is transmitted to humans by certain species of Ixodes ticks, which are found widely in temperate regions of the Northern hemisphere. Clinical features are diverse but death is rare. The risk of human infection is determined by the distribution and abundance of vector ticks, ecologic factors influencing tick infection rates, and human behaviors that promote tick bite. Rates of infection are highest among children aged 5 to 15 years and adults aged more than 50

Epidemiology of lung cancer.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of global cancer incidence and mortality, accounting for an estimated 2 million diagnoses and 1.8 million deaths. Neoplasms of the lungs are the second most common cancer diagnosis in men and women (after prostate and breast cancer, respectively). With increasing access to tobacco and industrialization in developing nations, lung cancer incidence is rising globally. The average age of diagnosis is 70 years old. Men are twice as likely to be diagnosed with lung cancer, which largely reflects differences in tobacco consumption, although women may be more suscepti

Epidemiology of Follicular Lymphoma.

Follicular lymphoma (FL) is a common indolent lymphoma subtype in Western countries. FL incidence increases with age, and shows considerable variation by race/ethnicity and geography. In the United States and France, FL incidence has been stable since 2000, whereas in other Western and Asian countries it has been increasing. Five-year relative survival rates have been increasing in Western and Asian countries. Progress on identifying FL-specific risk factors has accelerated with the implementation of the InterLymph nested classification and the availability of larger epidemiologic studies and

Epidemiology of Bladder Cancer.

Based on the latest GLOBOCAN data, bladder cancer accounts for 3% of global cancer diagnoses and is especially prevalent in the developed world. In the United States, bladder cancer is the sixth most incident neoplasm. A total of 90% of bladder cancer diagnoses are made in those 55 years of age and older, and the disease is four times more common in men than women. While the average 5-year survival in the US is 77%, the 5-year survival for those with metastatic disease is a measly 5%. The strongest risk factor for bladder cancer is tobacco smoking, which accounts for 50-65% of all cases. Occup

Sarcoidosis Epidemiology: Race Matters.

Rather than a single disease entity, sarcoidosis may be a constellation of "sarcoidoses" with a characteristic pattern of organ involvement and clinic course, depending upon the triggering exposure and underlying epidemiologic factors such as race. This review examines the racial disparities inherent to sarcoidosis disease course and mortality and discusses factors that may be responsible for these findings. In the United States, black patients with sarcoidosis experience more severe pulmonary disease, more multiorgan involvement, and an overall worse prognosis with higher rates of hospitaliza

Epidemiology of liver metastases.

AIMS: The objectives of this study were to (1) characterize the epidemiology of liver metastases at the time of primary cancer diagnosis (synchronous liver metastases), (2) characterize the incidence trends of synchronous liver metastases from 2010-2015 and (3) assess survival of patients with synchronous liver metastases. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 2010 to 2015 was queried to obtain cases of patients with liver metastases at the time of primary cancer diagnosis. The primary cancers with an incidence rate of liver metastasis >0.1 are presente

[Epidemiology of essential tremor].

INTRODUCTION: Essential tremor is one of the pathologies with more proportional weight in neurology consultations. However, compared to other neurodegenerative diseases, little is known about its prevalence and, in particular, its incidence and mortality, as well as which are the genetic, environmental, and biological factors of etiological importance. AIMS: To present the most relevant data on the descriptive epidemiology (prevalence, incidence, and mortality) of essential tremor. Likewise, some of the main risk or protective factors of this disease (analytical epidemiology) that have been s

Epidemiology of dancers fracture.

BACKGROUND: Dancer's fracture is a spiral, oblique fracture of the diaphysis of the fifth metatarsal. Although it is a well-known fracture in high performance athletes, it is less studied in a general population. The article investigates the epidemiology within an adult population consulting a regional trauma and orthopedic center in the United Kingdom. METHODS: Study population included all patients older than 16 years presenting with a dancer's fracture. Recorded data were age, sex, side and energy of trauma mechanism, applied treatment and time of healing. RESULTS: Of all fifth metatarsal

Gout epidemiology and comorbidities.

OBJECTIVE: To review the epidemiology of gout and associated comorbidities. METHODS: We review the key published studies of the epidemiology of gout and associated comorbidities. RESULTS: The prevalence of gout ranged 1-4% worldwide and incidence ranged 0.1-0.3%. Gout is more common in men vs. women by 3:1 to 10:1. Gout incidence and prevalence increased by each decade of life, with prevalence increasing to 11-13% and incidence increasing to 0.4% in people older than 80 years. Racial minorities in the U.S., New Zealand Māori, Han Chinese and some ethnic groups in Asia have a higher prevalenc

Epidemiology of Celiac Disease.

Celiac disease is a common, chronic inflammatory disorder of the small intestine triggered by exposure to gluten in individuals with certain genetic types. This disorder affects people of any age or gender. Although often thought to be European in origin, it is now global in extent. Presentations are variable, from asymptomatic patients to severe malnutrition. Initial detection usually relies on celiac-specific serology, and confirmation often requires intestinal biopsy. There have been substantial increases in prevalence and incidence over the last 2 decades for reasons that are almost certai

Epidemiology of urothelial carcinoma.

The epithelium lining is defined as the mucosal surfaces of the renal collecting tubules, calyces and pelvis, as well as the ureter, bladder and urethra. The term "urothelium" is used to refer to these surfaces. Upper tract urothelial carcinoma is a rare subset of urothelial cancers with a poor prognosis. Urinary bladder cancer is the most common malignancy involving the urinary system. Upper tract urothelial carcinoma is more common in men than in women, with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1. The incidence of urinary bladder cancer is also higher in men. Cigarette smoking and occupational exposu

Epidemiology of Huntington disease.

Huntington disease (HD) is an autosomal-dominant neurologic disorder caused by an expanded CAG trinucleotide repeat mutation in patients with characteristic motor signs and specific brain pathology. A repeat of 36 CAG or more can lead to the disease, with increased penetrance and decreased age of onset at longer CAG repeats. The epidemiology of HD thus depends on ascertainment of individuals with the expanded CAG mutation, and on examination of clinical signs to accurately assess disease onset. A larger number of individuals have an expanded CAG repeat than actively manifest the disease due to

Epidemiology of Intracranial Gliomas.

Gliomas are the most common primary intracranial neoplasms, which cause significant mortality and morbidity that is disproportionate to their relatively rare incidence. Many potential risk factors for glioma have been studied to date, but only few provide explanation for the number of brain tumor cases identified. The most significant findings include increased risk due to exposure to ionizing radiation and decreased risk with the history of allergy or atopic diseases. The potential effect of the cellular phone usage has been evaluated extensively, but the results remain inconclusive. A very s

[Epidemiology of Dupuytren's disease].

Dupuytren's disease is a chronic disease of the elderly. Assuming that life expectancy will increase considerably in the coming decades, Dupuytren's disease will gain more medical and socioeconomic relevance. In addition to well-known familial and genetic causes, other environmental factors (nicotine, diabetes, alcohol, trauma, work) are discussed. Knowledge of all factors and their influence on the onset and severity of the disease is important for diagnosis, therapy, and prevention of the disease.

Epidemiology of Viral Pneumonia.

The burden of pneumonia, including that due to respiratory viruses, is markedly higher in the very young (<5 years) and older adults (≥50 years). Respiratory viruses substantially contribute to pneumonia in both adults and children, and when systematically tested for, are more commonly detected than bacteria in both adults and children. It is difficult to distinguish between viruses by clinical presentation, and the exact clinical implication of viral detections among patients with pneumonia depends on the pathogen detected; however, there is increasing evidence of their importance in pneumoni

Melanoma Epidemiology and Prevention.

The epidemiology of melanoma is complex, and individual risk depends on sun exposure, host factors, and genetic factors, and in their interactions as well. Sun exposure can be classified as intermittent, chronic, or cumulative (overall) exposure, and each appears to have a different effect on type of melanoma. Other environmental factors, such as chemical exposures-either through occupation, atmosphere, or food-may increase risk for melanoma, and this area warrants further study. Host factors that are well known to be important are the numbers and types of nevi and the skin phenotype. Genetic

Genetic epidemiology of melanoma.

The field of melanoma genetics is moving at great pace with new platforms to investigate single nucleotide polymorphism, genome sequencing, gene expression, and methylation. Melanoma incidence is still rising mainly because of screening campaigns, which has increased the number of reported melanomas. However, mortality due to melanoma is not decreasing. Many cutaneous phenotypic risk factors have been linked to melanoma, but the association with UV radiation is very complex. The level of vitamin D affects both the risk of melanoma and prognosis, but more studies are needed. The genetics of mel

Epidemiology of Zika Virus.

Zika virus is an arbovirus belonging to the Flaviviridae family known to cause mild clinical symptoms similar to those of dengue and chikungunya. Zika is transmitted by different species of Aedes mosquitoes. Nonhuman primates and possibly rodents play a role as reservoirs. Direct interhuman transmission has also been reported. Human cases have been reported in Africa and Asia, Easter Island, the insular Pacific region, and Brazil. Its clinical profile is that of a dengue-like febrile illness, but recently associated Guillain-Barre syndrome and microcephaly have appeared. There is neither a vac
