The impact of recurrent seizures during childhood has a different influence upon the brain condition and mental activity of young epileptics at certain ages. Epilepsy has specific clinical features and characteristic EEG abnormalities, which occur at the developmental stage. Adolescence causes more extra burden to epileptic patients, particularly in the development of mental and/or emotional levels. In this paper, the authors report on two types of age-related phenomena--one benign in nature, and the other malignant. That is, RD (= rolandic discharge) is shown as a benign EEG feature with whic

AIM: To review the changes introduced by the new proposal of diagnostic scheme for people with epilepsy made by the International League Against Epilepsy in the categorization of the idiopathic occipital epilepsies of childhood and the diagnostic challenges of these disorders.
DEVELOPMENT: The term occipital paroxysms has disappeared and two major forms are distinguished: one with early onset or Panayiotopoulos type, officially recognized as a syndrome, and one with late onset or Gastaut type. To these entities we have to add the recently described idiopathic photosensitive occipital lobe epi

Among 1,000 outpatient epileptics who visited the Epilepsy Center of Bologna consecutively from 1974 to 1978, 596 cases of partial epilepsy (PE) were chosen, representing 62.9% of all cases classified according to the International Classification of epilepsies. Fifty-four of these cases (5.7%) of those classifiable) that were affected by benign infantile epilepsy with rolandic spikes were not analyzed further. The remaining cases were divided up into three groups based on the symptomatology of the seizures: (1) partial elementary epilepsy (PEE), 102 cases (10.8%); (2) partial complex epilepsy

Single gene disorders offer the best opportunity for identification of genetic linkage and of abnormal genes. Epilepsies with single gene inheritance include symptomatic epilepsies where there is associated diffuse brain dysfunction, and idiopathic epilepsies where seizures are the major neurological abnormality. There are over 200 single gene symptomatic epilepsies; most are rare. Gene identification has been achieved in a number of these conditions but these important advances have not yet led to a better understanding of epileptogenesis, because of the associated brain disease. Idiopathic s

Benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is a common pediatric epilepsy syndrome that has been widely reported to show abnormal brain structure and function. However, the genetic mechanisms underlying structural and functional changes remain largely unknown. Based on the structural and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data of 22 drug-naïve children with BECTS and 33 healthy controls, we conducted voxel-based morphology (VBM) and fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) analyses to compare cortical morphology and spontaneous brain activity between t

PURPOSE: Long-term seizure and developmental outcomes of benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) are thought to be good. Studies have shown that behavioral disorders may accompany BECTS. We aimed to investigate the frequency of behavioral disorders in patients with BECTS and evaluate their relationship to epilepsy features.
METHODS: Data for 41 patients with BECTS followed up at our clinic between December 2019 and June 2020 were analyzed. Behavioral disorders and intelligence were evaluated by the Turgay Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th Edition -

Benign partial epilepsy with centrotemporal sharp waves (benign rolandic epilepsy, BRE) is a common form of idiopathic, localisation-related epilepsy of childhood. The characteristic age-dependent focal sharp wave (fsw) found on the EEG in this disorder segregates as an autosomal dominant trait in families with probands with BRE and acts as a neurobiological marker for the increased risk of developing BRE, other benign partial epilepsies of childhood, and other developmental disorders in these families. One of the genes for idiopathic generalised epilepsy (IGE), designated EJM1, has been mappe

Hemispherectomy is the most successful operation for the control of seizures in a very select group of patients with infantile hemiplegia and intractable epilepsy. The efficacy of anatomical hemispherectomy has been offset to some degree by the fact that up to one third of those operated upon will subsequently develop obstructive hydrocephalus, and the so-called superficial subpial cerebral hemosiderosis, with potentially fatal complications. This review article details the operative technique of a modified `functional` hemispherectomy. In essence, the technique consists of removing the centra

INTRODUCTION: The 1989 International Classification of Epilepsies and Related Syndromes considers normal cognitive, neurologic and anatomic findings to be prerequisites for the diagnosis of idiopathic forms of epilepsy.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a woman with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) and a history of infantile hemiplegia. When she was a teenager, she had two generalized tonic-clonic seizures, later followed by a few seizures with loss of consciousness misinterpreted as complex partial seizures. Physical examination revealed right hemiparesis. A CT scan documented a left rolan

Formerly idiopathic, focal epilepsies (IFE) are self-limiting, "age-related" diseases that mainly occur during critical developmental periods. Childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes, or Rolandic epilepsy (RE), is the most frequent form of IFE. Together with the Landau-Kleffner syndrome and the epileptic Encephalopathy related to Status Epilepticus during slow Sleep syndrome (ESES), RE is part of a single and continuous spectrum of childhood epilepsies and epileptic encephalopathies with acquired cognitive, behavioral and speech and/or language impairment, known as the epilepsy-aphasia s

The purpose of this report is to describe the full clinical and electroencephalograpic spectrum of atypical benign partial epilepsy (ABPE) or pseudo-Lennox syndrome (PLS). We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and EEG data of 43 children with ABPE/PLS seen in our department during the last 25 years. Criteria for diagnosis of ABPE/PLS were the occurrence of generalized minor seizures as previously described for ABPE/PLS and the detection of focal sharp waves indistinguishable from those of rolandic epilepsy (RE) with generalization during slow sleep. Mental development prior to onset of epil

This report describes atypical absence seizures induced by phenobarbital (PB) in a patient with benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes. An 11-year-old girl had nocturnal motor seizures, beginning at the age of 7 years. Interictal EEG displayed centrotemporal sharp waves in the left and right sides alternatively, which increased significantly in frequency during sleep. She was given a diagnosis of benign childhood epilepsy with centrotemporal spike and was treated with valproic acid (VPA), which controlled her seizures for 3 years. She experienced nocturnal Rolandic seizures again

The clinical, pathophysiological and genetic features of some of the familial (idiopathic) paroxysmal movement disorders are reviewed. The paroxysmal dyskinesias share features and therefore may have the same pathophysiological mechanisms as other episodic neurological disorders which are known to be channelopathies. Paroxysmal kinesigenic choreoathetosis/dyskinesias (PKC/PKD) is a condition in which brief and frequent dyskinetic attacks are provoked by sudden movement. Antiepileptics particularly carbamazepine are very helpful for this condition. PKC has similarities to episodic ataxia type 1

OBJECTIVE: The Panayiotopoulos type of idiopathic occipital epilepsy has peculiar and easily recognizable ictal symptoms, which are associated with complex and variable spike activity over the posterior scalp areas. These characteristics of spikes have prevented localization of the particular brain regions originating clinical manifestations. We studied spike activity in this epilepsy to determine their brain generators.
METHODS: The EEG of 5 patients (ages 7-9) was recorded, spikes were submitted to blind decomposition in independent components (ICs) and those to source analysis (sLORETA), r
