Safety and protective efficacy of PfSPZ Vaccine administered to HIV-negative and -positive Tanzanian adults.

BACKGROUNDSanaria PfSPZ Vaccine, composed of attenuated Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) sporozoites (SPZ), protects against malaria. We conducted this clinical trial to assess the safety and efficacy of PfSPZ Vaccine in HIV-positive (HIV+) individuals, since the HIV-infection status of participants in mass vaccination programs may be unknown.METHODSThis randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial enrolled 18- to 45-year-old HIV-negative (HIV-) and well-controlled HIV+ Tanzanians (HIV viral load <40 copies/mL, CD4 counts >500 cells/μL). Participants received 5 doses of PfSPZ Vaccine or normal

Development of an Immunochromatography Assay to Detect Marburg Virus and Ravn Virus.

The recent outbreaks of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in Guinea, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, and Tanzania, none of which had reported previous outbreaks, imply increasing risks of spillover of the causative viruses, Marburg virus (MARV) and Ravn virus (RAVV), from their natural host animals. These outbreaks have emphasized the need for the development of rapid diagnostic tests for this disease. Using monoclonal antibodies specific to the viral nucleoprotein, we developed an immunochromatography (IC) assay for the rapid diagnosis of MVD. The IC assay was found to be capable of detecting approximate

[Asthenia or anaemia. What is the diagnosis?].

Giardiasis is one of the most frequent parasitic infections in the world that must be considered in every patient with persistent diarrhoea or digestive tract and/or malabsorption symptoms after a foreign trip or in the immigrant population, although its presentation is not always the typical. A 25 year old woman from Equatorial Guinea was seen at the clinic due to several months of asthenia. The Laboratory analyses showed normocytic and normochromic anaemia and high erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR). Throughout the presentation of the case report the differential diagnoses of asthenia, nor

Rise of Marburg virus in Africa: a call for global preparedness.

The Marburg virus disease (MVD) is caused by a rare RNA virus that can result in severe hemorrhagic fever in humans and other primates. The disease was first discovered in 1967 in Marburg Frankfurt in Germany and since then, sporadic cases have been reported in southeastern Africa. The Egyptian fruit bat is considered a reservoir for the virus, which can be transmitted through direct contact with infected bat or monkey tissue, bodily fluids, or contaminated objects. The Marburg virus disease shares clinical features with the Ebola virus disease, and there are no widely accepted vaccines or ant

Update on the Phylodynamic and Genetic Variability of Marburg Virus.

The COVID-19 pandemic has not only strained healthcare systems in Africa but has also intensified the impact of emerging and re-emerging diseases. Specifically in Equatorial Guinea, mirroring the situation in other African countries, unique zoonotic outbreaks have occurred during this challenging period. One notable resurgence is Marburg virus disease (MVD), which has further burdened the already fragile healthcare system. The re-emergence of the Marburg virus amid the COVID-19 pandemic is believed to stem from a probable zoonotic spill-over, although the precise transmission routes remain unc

[Paragonimiasis and pulmonary tuberculosis].

Paragonimiasis (infestation by the Paragonimus species) in Spain is a very infrequent entity within the group of imported infectious diseases. A native, resident of Equatorial Guinea who was affected by pulmonary and probably extrapulmonary paragonimiasis together with active pulmonary tuberculosis is described. This association is relatively common and may complicate the diagnostic process. The identification of the parasite was established from samples of pulmonary secretion obtained by natural expulsion and by fiber bronchoscopy in which Kinyoun carbonfucsine dye, Giemsa dye and argentic im

Cytotaxonomy, morphology and molecular systematics of the Bioko form of Simulium yahense (Diptera: Simuliidae).

Cytotaxonomic analysis of the polytene chromosomes from larvae of the Simulium damnosum Theobald complex from the island of Bioko in Equatorial Guinea is reported, and a new endemic cytoform is described. Chromosomally this cytoform is close to both S. squamosum (Enderlein) and S. yahense Vajime & Dunbar, but is not identical to either. However, it is morphologically and enzymatically identical to S. yahense. The Bioko form was also found to differ from other cytoforms of the S. damnosum complex in West Africa in the copy number or RFLP pattern of several different repetitive DNA sequences. It

Antibody prevalence against haemorrhagic fever viruses in randomized representative Central African populations.

Between 1985 and 1987, 5,070 randomly selected persons living in 6 central African countries (Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Equatorial Guinea and Gabon) were checked for serological evidence of haemorrhagic fever. Rural and urban areas were studied, including ecoclimatic zones ranging from dry savana to tropical rain forest. Virus-reactive antibodies were found with all antigens tested, and the global prevalence of positive sera was distributed as follows: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus, 0.22%; Rift Valley fever virus, 0.18%; Ebola virus, 12.40%; Marburg virus, 0.39%

The Cuban Response to the Ebola Epidemic in West Africa: Lessons in Solidarity.

In December 2013 the first case of Ebola appeared in Guinea. In September 2014 the United Nations (UN) and its specialized agency the World Health Organization (WHO) issued a call for medical collaboration in response to the medical crisis and social disaster caused by the Ebola virus epidemic in West Africa. Cuban authorities responded immediately to the call by offering specialized help for the epidemic, in collaboration with WHO. A group of 256 Cuban doctors, nurses and other health professionals provided direct care during the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Equatorial Guinea f

Upper extremity swelling and hyperpigmentation due to onchocerciasis in an American.

An American woman who had lived in Equatorial Guinea was seen in the United States with intermittent swelling, pruritus, hyperpigmentation, and mild cutaneous atrophy of the right arm. Filarial diseases were considered in the differential diagnosis; skin snips subsequently revealed Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae. There was no evidence of ocular involvement. The case illustrates the importance of obtaining a history of international travel, the need to consider "exotic" parasitic diseases in travelers returning from the tropics, and several of the presenting features of onchocerciasis. The neglected continuously emerging Marburg virus disease in Africa: A global public health threat.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Severe viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) is caused by Marburg virus which is a member of the Filoviridae (filovirus) family. Many Marburg virus disease (MVD) outbreaks are reported in five decades. A major notable outbreak with substantial reported cases of infections and deaths was in 2022 in Uganda. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported MVD outbreak in Ghana in July 2022 following the detection of two probable VHF patients there. Further, the virus was reported from two other African countries, the Equatorial Guinea (February 2023) and Tanzania (March 2023). There have

Hosting of mass gathering sporting events during the 2013-2016 Ebola virus outbreak in West Africa: experience from three African countries.

• Mass gatherings at sporting events attract millions of international and national host-country travellers, who may put themselves at risk of acquiring local endemic infectious diseases. • The 2013–2016 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak in West Africa that resulted in over 28 637 cases and 11 315 deaths required that countries holding these events put in place public health programmes for enhanced surveillance and specific response plans for any suspected cases of EVD. • Three major sports events were held in Africa during the EVD outbreak, attended by athletes from numerous African countrie

[The focus of human trypanosomiasis in Campo (Cameroon). History and endemic situation in 1998].

For the first time in the last thirteen years, the human sleeping sickness focus at Campo, spanning the Cameroon-Equatorial Guinea border areas, has been prospected. The screening was carried out simultaneously on both sides of the border. This focus has been known since the beginning of the century but, contrary to what took place in other well-known foci in bordering countries south of Cameroon, either in the 1920s or the 1980s--there has never been an epidemic outbreak in that area. Such an epidemiological situation makes this focus particularly interesting. Though still active, trypanosomi

Ocular loiasis affecting a child and its assessment by Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography.

A 9-year-old girl from Equatorial Guinea presented to the emergency department complaining of foreign body sensation in her right eye. A thin and large, translucent, slowly moving, coiled worm was observed underneath the conjunctiva. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography revealed hyperreflective small areas surrounded by larger hyporeflective areas into the subconjunctival space. Loa loa microfilaria was evidenced on blood test. Surgical extraction of the subconjunctival worm was intended on slit lamp and under sedation in the operating room, but it was unsuccessful due to poor coopera

A Case of Cutaneous Myiasis Caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga Larvae in a Korean Traveler Returning from Central Africa.

The cutaneous myiasis has been rarely reported in the Republic of Korea. We intended to describe here a case of furuncular cutaneous myiasis caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga larvae in a Korean traveler returned from Central Africa. A patient, 55-year-old man, had traveled to Equatorial Guinea, in Central Africa for a month and just returned to Korea. Physical examinations showed 2 tender erythematous nodules with small central ulceration on the left buttock and thigh. During skin biopsy, 2 larvae came out from the lesion. C. anthropophaga was identified by paired mouth hooks (toothed, spade-

Divergent antibody recognition profiles are generated by protective mRNA vaccines against Marburg and Ravn viruses.

The first-ever recent Marburg virus (MARV) outbreak in Tanzania and recent emergences in Rwanda, Ghana and Equatorial Guinea underscore the importance of therapeutic or vaccine development against the virus, for which none are approved. mRNA vaccines were proven successful in a pandemic-response to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2, making it an appealing platform to target pathogenic emerging viruses. Here, we develop 1-methyl-pseudouridine-modified mRNA vaccines formulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNP) targeting the glycoproteins (GP) of MARV and the closely-related Ravn virus (

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus screening among African individuals in Spain: Lessons to learn.

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne viral disease. CCHF is an emerging infectious disease given the expanding distribution of its main vector. This study aimed to evaluate the importance of CCHFV infection in migrants from Africa who attended a tertiary health care centre in Spain. METHODOLOGY: A seroepidemiological study was conducted among African patients referred to the University Hospital of Salamanca, Spain. Patients were retrospectively recruited from 2005 to 2023. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We screened 485 serum samples, with a mean (±SD) age of 17 years (±9.

Serologic evidence of orthomarburgviruses and an orthoebolavirus in frugivorous Malagasy bats.

Recent outbreaks of Marburg virus disease in regions of sub-Saharan Africa without prior record such as Ghana, Tanzania, Equatorial Guinea, and Rwanda challenge the current understanding of areas at-risk for filovirus spillover. The orthomarburgvirus host Rousettus aegyptiacus exists in these regions, and has a sister species, Rousettus madagascariensis, native only to the island of Madagascar. We expand on previous surveillance of frugivorous bats in Madagascar, and detect seroreactivity against an orthoebolavirus antigenically-related to Bundibugyo virus at 1.50-5.06% seroprevalence in Rouse
