[A stand equipped with a tonometer for measuring arterial pressure during veloergometry].

A special stand with a fixed mercury tonometer has been designed providing an easy and convenient position of the patient's relaxed hand with the outstretched elbow joint on it for repeated measurements of blood pressure during bicycle ergometry. Taking the hand away neither deranges the position of the rider nor limits the intensive pedaling. The stand design is very simple, reliable and convenient to use. The optimal conditions for accurate measurements of the blood pressure during bicycle exercise are warranted.

Ventilatory efficiency in cardiac amyloidosis-A systematic review and meta-analysis.

In cardiac amyloidosis (CA) cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is underexplored. This study evaluated exercise limitations in CA using CPET, focusing on the ventilation-to-carbon dioxide production (VE/VCO2) slope and peak oxygen uptake (VO2). Seventeen studies involving 1505 patients were analyzed and systematically reviewed according to PRISMA reporting guidelines. Subgroup analyses assessed differences by diagnosis (ATTR vs. AL), CPET modality, and age. The cohort included 12% with AL, 80% with ATTR (23% hereditary [ATTRv], 70% wild-type [ATTRwt], 7% unspecified), and 8% unidentified s

[Hemodynamic mechanisms of the decrease in physical work capacity in hypothyroidism and thyrotoxicosis].

A study of 21 patients with hypothyroidism, 22 patients with thyrotoxicosis and 18 normal subjects, using echocardiography and bicycle ergometry, demonstrated different mechanisms of reduced working capacity, associated with those conditions. The decrease in chronotropic and inotropic heart reserve, associated with hypothyroidism, is shown to be rooted in slowed-down relaxation of left ventricular posterior wall in the presence of diastolic arterial hypertension, while limited working capacity, associated with thyrotoxicosis, is rooted in resting myocardial hyperfunction due to hyperkinetic ci

[Ventricular pre-excitation syndrome in adolescents].

A total of 26 adolescents (aged 14-18) with the premature ventricular exitement (PVE) syndrome were under observation, 17 of them being followed up in the time course of 2 to 10 years. The LGL syndrome and Maheim type were rather often noted among such adolescents. Paroxysmal tachycardia attacks and in some cases extrasystole were recorded in 34% of the patients with the PVE syndrome. Bicycle ergometry evidenced a decrease in the functional capacity of the cardiovascular system of the adolescents with the PVE syndrome.

Variability in Laboratory vs. Field Testing of Peak Power, Torque, and Time of Peak Power Production Among Elite Bicycle Motocross Cyclists.

The aim of this study was to ascertain the variation in elite male bicycle motocross (BMX) cyclists' peak power, torque, and time of power production during laboratory and field-based testing. Eight elite male BMX riders volunteered for the study, and each rider completed 3 maximal sprints using both a Schoberer Rad Messtechnik (SRM) ergometer in the laboratory and a portable SRM power meter on an Olympic standard indoor BMX track. The results revealed a significantly higher peak power (p ≤ 0.001, 34 ± 9%) and reduced time of power production (p ≤ 0.001, 105 ± 24%) in the field tests when comp

The ecological validity of laboratory cycling: Does body size explain the difference between laboratory- and field-based cycling performance?

Previous researchers have identified significant differences between laboratory and road cycling performances. To establish the ecological validity of laboratory time-trial cycling performances, the causes of such differences should be understood. Hence, the purpose of the present study was to quantify differences between laboratory- and road-based time-trial cycling and to establish to what extent body size [mass (m) and height (h)] may help to explain such differences. Twenty-three male competitive, but non-elite, cyclists completed two 25 mile time-trials, one in the laboratory using an air

Functional Electrical Stimulation Changes Muscle Oxygenation in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease During Moderate-Intensity Exercise: A Secondary Analysis.

We previously showed that functional electrical stimulation during cycle ergometry (FES-cycling) increased oxygen consumption (VO2), indicating that metabolism during exercise was increased. However, the effects on muscle oxygenation have never been studied. The aim of this secondary analysis was to analyse changes in muscle oxygenation during an FES-cycling session. Eight patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who were participating in a pulmonary rehabilitation programme were enrolled. Each participant carried out 30 minutes of cycle ergometry with a constant load at 50% of peak

Magnetic resonance imaging of osteonecrosis and osteoarthrosis in exercising quadriplegics and paraplegics.

Degenerative bone and joint diseases that commonly accompany spinal cord injury (SCI) may be exacerbated by physical activity of the lower extremities. To determine if orthopaedic stress imposed by electrically stimulated cycling exercise is associated with osteonecrosis or osteoarthrosis in persons with chronic SCI, ten quadriplegics and paraplegics who had each undergone electrical stimulation cycle ergometry exercise two or three times weekly for longer than 1.5 years underwent magnetic resonance examinations of the femoral heads and the dominant knee. Three of the ten subjects had no evide

A simple ergometer modification can expand the exercise options for wheelchair clients.

PURPOSE: Wheelchair users are by necessity, limited to upper body exercise and have fewer exercise options. An ergometer found in many homes and fitness facilities can be simply adapted for use by those with lower extremity disabilities. This article outlines a novel modification using polyvinyl chloride(PVC) tubing to an existing exercise ergometer. METHOD: This adapted device was metabolically tested using 9 paraplegics and 8 healthy controls (mean age of 29 years; mean body mass index BMI of 23.5 kg/m(2)) and found to allow for the attainment of peak exercise by both groups. RESULTS: The

Effects of aerobic cycling training in patients with gynaecologic cancer-related lower extremity lymphedema: A randomised comparative study.

PURPOSE: Lower extremity lymphedema (LEL) after gynaecological cancer is a chronic disease that affects quality of life and functionality negatively. Exercise therapies help to volume reduction and improved lower extremity functionality and quality of life in patients with lymphedema. However, studies on this subject were mostly focused on upper extremity lymphedema. In this study, we aimed to compare complete decongestive therapy (CDT) and CDT + cycle ergometry in terms of quality of life, lower extremity functionality and volume measurement in patients with gynaecological cancer-related lowe

Lesson of the month: Rowing-induced laryngeal obstruction: a novel cause of exertional dyspnoea: characterised by direct laryngoscopy.

Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) is a key differential diagnosis for unexplained dyspnoea in athletes. The gold standard means for diagnosis of EILO is direct laryngoscopy, performed continuously, while an athlete undertakes the specific sport that precipitates their symptoms. This report provides the first descriptions of rowing-associated EILO in two competitive rowers presenting with unexplained dyspnoea and cough. The report describes the methodology and safety of the use of continuous laryngoscopy in the context of maximal rowing ergometry and the use of this technique as a t

Effect of Exercise on Arterial Stiffness: Is There a Ceiling Effect?

BACKGROUND: Whether arterial stiffness (AS) can be improved by regular exercise in healthy individuals remains equivocal according to cross-sectional and longitudinal studies assessing arterial properties at discrete time points. The purpose of the present study was to pinpoint the time course of training-induced adaptations in central AS. METHODS: Aorta characteristic impedance (Zc) and carotid distensibility (CD) were determined with ultrasonography prior to (week 0) and across 8 weeks (weeks 2, 4, and 8) of supervised endurance training (ET) (3 × 60 minutes cycle ergometry sessions per wee

Noninvasive assessment of hemodynamic responses to exercise in pulmonary regurgitation after operations to correct pulmonary outflow obstruction.

The influence of pulmonary regurgitation (PR) on exercise capacity is unknown. The hemodynamic responses to exercise in postoperative patients with PR was determined using Doppler-measured regurgitant fraction to indicate PR severity. Maximal heart rate, oxygen consumption and workload capacity were measured during upright cycle ergometry. Cardiac output was measured at rest and during submaximal supine cycle ergometry by pulsed Doppler echocardiography. Oxygen consumption was simultaneously measured and exercise factor was calculated as the change in cardiac output per change in oxygen consum
