INTRODUCTION: Parvovirus B19 infection is frequent. Primary infection leads to diverse skin manifestations including the recently described gloves-and-socks papulopurpura.
CASE REPORT: A patient presented with a papulopurpuric eruption on the nose, hands, feet and perineum with cheilitis and high-grade fever. Parvovirus B19 serology showed characteristic IgG on the 15th day after the initial eruption demonstrating the seroconversion. Cold agglutinins were positive during the eruption and negative after regression.
DISCUSSION: The gloves-and-socks papulopurpura syndrome was initially describe

Malaria is a vector-borne tropical infection caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium and is transmitted by the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito. The disease is commonly characterized by fever, edema, thrombocytopenia, hypoglycemia, anemia, and myalgias; however, the infection's cutaneous presentations are not commonly emphasized and tend to be overlooked. A literature search was conducted that focused on the various skin pathologies that malaria patients have been noted to present with using case reports and currently available literature. We describe the various skin manifestations a

Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is the aetiological agent of erythema infectiosum. Primary infection during pregnancy can be transmitted to the foetus and cause foetal abnormalities related to depletion of erythrocyte progenitor cells, including congenital anaemia, hydrops, and foetal death. In this paper we report the detection of B19V infection in a pregnant patient, which onset occurred without appreciable signs and symptoms until she developed inappropriate contractions for gestational age and fluid loss. B19V infection resulted in severe hydrops fetalis with a fatal course for the foetus, whi

Erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) is the most common clinical presentation of acute parvovirus B19 infection in infancy. In healthy adults, most cases of infection are asymptomatic or accompanied by a flu-like syndrome like headaches and myalgia. Haematological manifestations are dominated by transient aplasia of erythroid progenitor cells which remains asymptomatic in most of non immunocompromised patients. Patients with sickle cell disease, thalassemia or other disorders associated with shortened red blood cell survival are at particular risk for marked anemia or red blood cell aplasia. I

Erythrovirus B19 has been associated with an expanding range of clinical disorders since its identification as the etiological agent of erythema infectiosum, or fifth disease of childhood: acute arthropathy, dermatologic manifestations, chronic anemia in immunocompromised patients, and transient aplastic crisis in individuals with underlying chronic hemolytic disorders. Furthermore, exposure to and infection by B19 virus can lead to serious complications during pregnancy, which may result in fetal anemia, spontaneous abortion, and hydrops fetalis. Consequently, the B19 immune status of pregnan

Erythema infectiosum is the main manifestation of human parvovirus B19 infections. Further B19-related diseases commonly associated with the acute infection are flue-like symptoms, transient aplastic crisis, transient arthralgias, leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, spontaneous abortion and hydrops fetalis in pregnant women. Hepatitis, myocarditis, meningitis, encephalitis as well as pure red cell anemia may occur occasionally. In addition parvovirus B19 infections have been frequently described as cause or trigger of various forms of autoimmune diseases affecting all blood cell lines, joints, co

Human parvovirus B19 is a common cause of benign erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) in otherwise healthy children. Immunocompromized patients are at risk of developing chronic infections leading to chronic hyporegenerative anemia. We report the case of a nine-year-old boy who presented five days after renal transplantation with seizures and signs of encephalitis on MRI. The clinical course was characterized by anemia and seroconversion for parvovirus B19 accompanied by a high viral load (>10(9) copies per milliliter). A transfusion of red blood cells that the patient required after transplan

Parvovirus B19 (B19), also known as "erythema infectiosum", is a disease that occurs in smaller outbreaks during late winter and early summer; and in Denmark an epidemic occurs every three years. The symptoms vary from fever, fatigue and the characteristic maculopapoulous erythema to asymptomatic cases in 50% of the infected patients. Two-thirds of the Danish population have been infected. The virus has a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations ranging from erythema nodosum in children, arthralgia/arthritis (especially in adults), aplastic crisis in patients with haemolytic anaemia, chronic

Human parvovirus is the causative agent of erythema infectiosum, a mild epidemic illness. In a recent outbreak in northeast Scotland, six women had serologic evidence of having contracted human parvovirus infection during pregnancy. Two of the women had midtrimester abortions, and both abortuses were grossly hydropic with anemia. They had similar microscopical histopathological features--a pronounced leukoerythroblastic reaction, hepatitis, excessive iron pigment in the liver, and eosinophilic changes in the hematopoietic cell nuclei. Dot hybridization with radiolabeled human parvovirus DNA pr

Parvovirus infection (PVI) is widespread, characterized by airborne, bloodborne and vertical transmission routes. Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) exhibits tropism to erythropoietic cells. According to the increased likelihood principle of PVB19 infection and the severity of the consequences, immunocompromised individuals, especially those with hematological manifestations of diseases, are in increased risk group. Based on the own research results and analysis of the published data, we have proposed specific algorithms for PVI laboratory testing in individual risk groups, taking into account the peculia

BACKGROUND: The incidence of thyroid nodules has increased dramatically in recent decades. Although this increase has been attributed to improved imaging modalities, the question arises as to whether other environmental factors, such as infectious agents are influential.
METHODS: Adult patients with newly diagnosed papillary thyroid carcinoma, benign thyroid nodules, and healthy euthyroid controls without nodules; were recruited. Various clinical and biochemical parameters including thyroid function tests and serum Parvovirus B19 Ab (IgG) were assessed and compared between groups.
RESULTS: I

Human parvovirus B19 infection is one of the common complications of patients diagnosed with Sickle cell disease (SCD). Parvovirus infections are characterized by a severe anemia with reticulocytopenia, sometimes presenting with other clinical manifestations. The infection can occur simultaneously in patient's cohabitants also diagnosed with SCD. Early recognition and differential diagnosis are essential for a proper disease management and treatment. We present two siblings with SCD and human parvovirus B19 infection.

Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) is a small DNA virus that causes the fifth disease in children; however it can also affect adults. The infection can be asymptomatic in about a quarter of healthy subjects. Typical clinical manifestations are: short lived fever accompanied by asthenia, myalgias and pharyngodynia; symmetrical acute polyarthritis; megalo-erytema in child; maculopulotic rash and/or fleeting purpuric at the extremities in adult; adenopathies in the cervical area. Atypical manifestions can affect neurological system (both central and peripheral), hearth and kidney. We describe a 37-year-old m

INTRODUCTION: Primary parvovirus B19 infection may present a wide variety of dermatological features. We report two cases of parvovirus infection presenting as flexural erythema of baboon syndrome induced by various drugs, but associated with purpuric or oedematous features.
CASE REPORTS: A pregnant 23-year-old woman at 39 weeks of amenorrhoea and a 49-year-old woman consulted for flexural eruption in a setting of fever. In both cases, clinical examination revealed erythematosus rash in the major skin folds, with vesicles and elements of purpura in the former patient and bullous oedema in the

We report a patient with acute heart failure due to human parvovirus B19 infection. The patient was a 36-year-old man with polyarthralgia, fatigue and swelling of his upper eyelids and all four limbs. These symptoms disappeared, but 5 days after the first consultation, the patient presented with severe exertional dyspnoea, chest pain and swelling of his whole body. Erythema was observed on the skin of hands, fingers and abdomen. Pleural and pericardial effusion, ascites and hepatosplenomegaly were detected. Laboratory examination showed positive results for anti-human parvovirus B19 IgM and B1

A previously healthy 16-year-old boy developed papular purpuric gloves and socks syndrome concomitant with mononeuritis multiplex attributable to acute infection with parvovirus B19. A cutaneous biopsy showed lymphocytic lichenoid vasculitis and perineuritis. We discuss the relevance of these pathologic findings, and we suggest a correlation with the patient's neurologic condition. This case illustrates the difficulties in differentiating dysesthesia accompanying cutaneous manifestations of exanthem from neurologic disease on the basis of the clinical appearance alone.

With the advent of vaccine protection for many diseases, many of today's practitioners have never seen cases of what were the common childhood diseases. If any of these diseases returns, there is a risk that the practitioner will not recognize it. This article tries to establish why the diseases may return and to describe the diseases with photographs.
