This review describes different aspects of the host immune response to Trichinella. The role of antibodies, T cells, mast cells, eosinophils and neutrophils in immune reaction to this nematode is considered, in the light of the recent data derived from experimental models, both in in vivo and in vitro. The knowledge of immune response mechanisms against Trichinella is fundamental to understand how the parasite can escape such mechanisms. The principal evasion mechanisms of host immune response occurring in trichinellosis are described, some of which are shared by other parasites, some others a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social phobia is characterized by avoidance of feared social situations. Although avoidance is a central feature of social anxiety, few studies have examined avoidance learning.
METHODS: We used a probabilistic instrumental learning paradigm where participants had to learn by trial and error which response led to the disappearance of a neutral or angry face. 20 high socially anxious and 20 non-socially anxious individuals with an average level of social anxiety learned to avoid an angry or a neutral face by choosing one of two cues. Each of the cues led to the disap

Cholecystokinin (CCK) has been implicated in anxiety disorders. The midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG), which modulates anxiety and panic reactions, contains CCK-immunoreactive fibers and CCK(2) receptors. The present study investigated the involvement of CCK(2) receptors of the PAG dorsolateral subdivision (dlPAG) in the regulation of inhibitory avoidance and escape, two defensive behaviors that have been related in terms of psychopathology to generalized-anxiety and panic disorders, respectively. Male Wistar rats were microinjected in the dlPAG with the CCK(2) receptor agonist cholecystokini

Pharmacological evidence indicates that the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala (BLA) is involved in the mediation of inhibitory avoidance but not of escape behavior in the elevated T-maze test. These defensive responses have been associated with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder, respectively. In the present study, we determined whether the BLA plays a differential role in the control of inhibitory avoidance and escape responses in the elevated T-maze. Male Wistar rats (250-280 g, N = 9-10 in each treatment group) were pre-exposed to one of the open arms of the maze for 30

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to assess whether the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism influences the adequacy of the neurohormonal response to ACE inhibitors in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF).
BACKGROUND: The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) plays an important role in the pathophysiology of CHF, and aldosterone levels closely relate to outcome in patients with CHF. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors suppress the RAAS, but a significant proportion of patients exhibit elevated serum levels of aldosterone desp

The growth of malignant tumors is associated with mechanisms of immune escape and inhibition of apoptosis. Livin is a novel member of the inhibitors of apoptosis (IAP) protein family that inhibits cell apoptosis. Livin is specifically expressed by the majority of tumor cells, but it is not expressed in normal adult tissues. In this study, we used umbilical cord blood (UCB)-derived dendritic cells (DCs) infected with a recombinant adenovirus encoding the livin gene as a vaccine to activate effector cells such as cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) to recognize and kill livin-expressing cancer cells

Refugee psychiatry deals with reactions related to escape and camp life, and to adjustment reactions to the host country. ICM (The Intergovernmental Committee for Migration) deals with refugees from the time they are accepted somewhere. This includes transportation, and medical screening to make sure that refugees are fit for travel, satisfy public health requirements etc. This work involves evaluations and efforts to improve health, such as keeping patients out of the psychotic stage and detoxifying opium users. Essentially, a refugee population has the same psychopathology as any other group

For autonomous navigation in indoor environments, aerial robots mostly take cameras, LiDAR, ultrasonic ranging sensors, and other devices for collision avoidance, rarely using tactile sensors. However, cameras are susceptible to lighting conditions, LiDAR requires high computational resources, and ultrasonic sensors have blind zones when measuring at short distances. In contrast, insects and rodents can perceive their surroundings via tactile sensing even in complete darkness. Inspired by the escape strategy of mosquitoes that navigate along boundaries using tactile sensing in confined spaces,

Rapidly increasing anthropogenic CO2 can impose physiological challenges for fish species that are thought to be tolerant. We tested the hypothesis that elevated pCO2 will affect the routine activity and escape response by affecting energy metabolism and/or the muscle physiology of coastal fish. We exposed threespine stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) to pCO2 of ~ 700 µatm (pH 7.9 representing current levels), ~ 1400 µatm (pH 7.6 representing upwelling events) and ~ 3500 µatm (pH 7.3 representing a future predicted scenario for coastal areas) for 2 weeks. Baseline activity was significantly

Rodents display characteristic defense responses to predators that are influenced by predatory imminence. The midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG) serves an important role controlling these responses. The most influential model states that variations in defensive topography are due to distinct PAG regions: ventrolateral PAG (VLPAG) controls postencounter defense, such as freezing and immobility, whereas lateral PAG (LPAG) controls circa-strike defense, such as escape and flight. Here we used channel rhodopsin (ChR2) stimulation to probe the structure of defensive behavior controlled by LPAG and

Understanding species-specific flight behaviours is essential in developing methods of guiding fish spatially, and requires knowledge on how groups of fish respond to aversive stimuli. By harnessing their natural behaviours, the use of physical manipulation or other potentially harmful procedures can be minimised. We examined the reactions of sea-caged groups of 50 salmon (1331 ± 364 g) to short-term exposure to visual or acoustic stimuli. In light experiments, fish were exposed to one of three intensities of blue LED light (high, medium and low) or no light (control). Sound experiments includ

BACKGROUND: It has been hypothesised that dysfunctional strategies for avoiding depression play an important role in the pathway to mania. Support for this hypothesis comes from studies demonstrating that remitted and manic bipolar patients show similar cognitive biases to currently depressed patients.
METHOD: Manic patients, depressed bipolar patients, remitted bipolar patients and healthy controls were compared on an expanded version of Nolen-Hoeksema's [Nolen-Hoeksema, S., 1991. Responses to depression and their effects on the duration of depressed mood. Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 100

Enchytraeids are typical inhabitants of many soils, contributing to vital processes of this environmental compartment. Indirectly they are involved in regulating the degradation of organic matter, as well as improving the pore structure of the soil. Due to their behaviour, they are able to avoid unfavourable environmental conditions. Avoidance tests with enchytraeids, initially developed with earthworms by several authors, are quick and easy to perform. With these tests a first assessment of the toxicity of a (contaminated or spiked) soil is possible in just 48 h by using the reaction of the e

Unlike other venomous predators, the parasitoid wasp Ampulex compressa incapacitates its prey, the cockroach Periplaneta americana, to provide a fresh food supply for its offspring. We first established that the wasp larval development, from egg laying to pupation, lasts about 8 days during which the cockroach must remain alive but immobile. To this end, the wasp injects a cocktail of neurotoxins to manipulate the behavior of the cockroach. The cocktail is injected directly into the head ganglia using biosensors located on the stinger. The head sting induces first 30 min of intense grooming fo

To study the escaping behavior of 1030 schizophrenic in-patients, "Brief Rating Scale for Dangerous Behavior of In-patient" was used to asses them within their first week hospitalization from May 1994 to March 1996. The result showed that 276 (26.8%) patients had escaping behavior. The patients with paranoid schizophrenia had higher rate of escaping behavior. There was no correlation being found between sex, age, duration of illness, and escaping behavior. The patients with the history of such behavior were more likely to escape from ward (41.9%). The suggestion for preventing such behavior we

Electrical stimulation of the dorsal periaqueductal gray (DPAG) elicits autonomic responses similar to those following peripheral pain stimulation. The present study analyzes the effects of morphine and midazolan applied to the same DPAG site on the autonomic responses induced by both types of stimulation. Both drugs attenuated the increase in heart rate and blood pressure induced by DPAG stimulation while attenuating only the increase in heart rate induced by pain stimulation. These results suggest that the neural substrates of the autonomic expression of the DPAG and pain stimulation are dif

Rapid running and jumping are core components of escape responses in prey animals and provide measurable traits for studying locomotor performance in large mammals. The genetic basis of these escape-related locomotor traits remains poorly understood in large mammals, partly because repeated, standardized phenotyping under field conditions is challenging. Here, we leveraged a sheep population carrying argali-introgressed genetic components to map genetic variations associated with running speed and jumping height. Through controlled field experiments, automated high-resolution phenotyping, whol

A wealth of evidence associates disruptions of the parent-infant relationship (e.g. childhood parental loss or parental neglect) with the later appearance of panic disorder. In rodents, neonatal maternal separation and maternal deprivation (MD) are reported to increase the expression of anxiety-related defensive responses in adult animals. However, little is known about the long-term consequences of these early-life stressors in animal models of panic. We here investigated the effects of a single 24 h-episode of MD on post-natal day 11 (PND 11) in adult male Wistar rats submitted to two animal

Many aquatic organisms detect the presence of moving objects in their environment, such as predators, by sensing the hydrodynamic disturbances the movements produce. The resultant water flow is readily detectable by stationary organisms, but free-swimming organisms are carried with the surrounding water and may not detect the bulk surrounding flow, which limits the available information about the source. We have developed a theory that clarifies what information is contained in disturbances generated by an attacking predator that is available to a free-swimming organism and might be extracted

Instinctive defensive behaviors are essential for animal survival. Across the animal kingdom, there are sensory stimuli that innately represent threat and trigger stereotyped behaviors such as escape or freezing [1-4]. While innate behaviors are considered to be hard-wired stimulus-responses [5], they act within dynamic environments, and factors such as the properties of the threat [6-9] and its perceived intensity [1, 10, 11], access to food sources [12-14], and expectations from past experience [15, 16] have been shown to influence defensive behaviors, suggesting that their expression can be
