There are only a small number of studies dealing with the impact of eugenic theories and practices on the research of particular neurological diseases during the Third Reich. Thus, this contribution to the special issue on neurology in Germany between 1933 and 1945 focuses exemplarily on epilepsy research. By drawing on primary sources and secondary literature the article tries to reconstruct the scientific discourse of the time and consider the implications for patients. National socialistic ideology was based on eugenic thinking and the implementation of eugenic policies was a major politica

Surgical sterilisation practices significantly increased in contraceptive capacity as the twentieth century unfolded. Despite this prolific uptake, sterilisation is markedly absent from histories of birth control and family planning and instead has remained addressed within histories of eugenics and coercion. The purpose of this article is twofold: firstly, to demonstrate a voluntary, contraceptive history of sterilisation that is distinct from, though connected to, involuntary and eugenic sterilisation; and secondly, to explain the integral role that individual doctors and their private pract

The links between ethics, medicine and the law cannot readily produce appropriate criteria for human quality questions, largely because ethics are misconstrued where they are not excluded; but also because the science at issue is full of unknowns. The paper surveys issues in eugenics, abortion and euthanasia.

For more than 50 years, sterilization of mentally retarded persons was an accepted practice in many states as a way to reduce the number of persons born with mental defects. In recent years, the practice has come under heavy challenge, both medically and legally. At present, only 19 states have statutes that allow sterilizations for eugenic reasons. This article examines important court decisions regarding eugenic sterilization laws and the legal status of sterilization of mentally retarded adults and minors, as well as the consequent legal implications for physicians. On the centenary of George Huntington's death, Wexler et.al. reconsider the setting and the collaborative effort that produced his description of “hereditary chorea,” today Huntington's disease. Tracing the changing identity of this illness, they discuss the legacy of eugenics, the search for the gene, and ongoing research toward a cure.

The rise of Mendelism has often been associated with the development of agricultural sciences and the attempts to improve varieties and select new plants. In contrast, historians have tended to stress the tensions between Mendelism and medicine originating in the influence of eugenicists. The use of Mendel's laws in the context of discussing human inheritance and the transmission of pathologies was nonetheless pervading the medical literature from the 1920s onwards. This paper investigates the dynamics of medical Mendelism by comparing developments in France and in Britain. In contrast to relu

Cortical blindness is characterized by loss of vision due to dysfunction of the visual cortices, most commonly secondary to bilateral ischemic infarcts of the occipital lobe. Other causes include surgery such as aortic valve replacement, laryngeal surgery, craniotomy, cerebral angiography, head trauma, and partial seizures. Visual anosognosia is a distinct feature of cortical blindness, wherein patients claim they can see and confabulate visual perceptions, despite loss of sight. We herewith present a rare phenomenon known as Anton Syndrome, an eponym named after the Austrian neurologist and p

The Kallikak Family was, along with The Jukes: A Study in Crime, Pauperism, Disease, and Heredity, one of the most visible eugenic family narratives published in the early 20th century. Published in 1912 and authored by psychologist Henry Herbert Goddard, director of the psychological laboratory at the Vineland Training School for Feebleminded Children in Vineland, New Jersey, The Kallikak Family told the tale of a supposedly "degenerate" family from rural New Jersey, beginning with Deborah, one of the inmates at the Training School. Like most publications in the genre, this pseudoscientific t

This study examines the declining fertility rates in East Asian Confucian societies, focusing on the unique childrearing practices and how future advancements in human enhancement and reprogenetic technologies may further accelerate the demographic decline. The focus is on the obsession with "child perfectionism" driven by the pursuit of academic credentialism and hypercompetitive social norms. This phenomenon has roots in the historical imperial examinations of China and has evolved into modern college entrance exams. Recent growth in knowledge-based and technology-driven economies in East As

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR), methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) polymorphisms, 5 serum related molecular levels and the risk of adverse pregnancies in different genders.
METHODS: Patients aged from 22 to 38 with a history of adverse pregnancy treated in our genetic eugenics clinic of Henan Provincial People's Hospital are selected. The controls aged from 20 to 34 undergoing eugenics examinations in our genetic eugenics clinic that had no history of adverse pregnancy and at least one healthy child are

The history of body mass index (BMI) is intertwined with the development of anthropometric statistics used to classify and measure human variation, an intellectual foundation of eugenics. While useful in analyzing population trends in relative body weight, BMI possesses multiple shortcomings when used as an individualized health screening tool. These limitations compromise the just care of people with disabilities, especially patients with achondroplasia and Down syndrome, for whose care BMI use contributes to clinical ostracization.

The question of what counts as a successful outcome of the process of genetics counselling has recently become central because of the increasing calls for efficiency in health care, and for means of measuring efficiency. Angus Clarke has drawn attention to this trend, and has argued against both a measure in terms of the number of terminations of pregnancy performed as a result of counselling, and an assessment in terms of the contribution of genetics counselling to a national eugenics policy. He suggests instead a measure of workload. There are good arguments for supporting Clarke's position

Between his birth in 1873 and his death in 1944, Walter Sidney Bromhead lived an eventful life. He owned land on four continents, sat on the board of several fraudulent insurance companies, published in the Eugenics Review, was mocked in Australia's parliament, briefly ran colonial Kenya's largest white veterans' association, and claimed he met nearly every notable person of the twentieth century from Shackleton to Lenin. Yet his life's work centred around his obsession with starting a global social movement he dubbed 'Fedrity'. By binding Britain's colonies into a global federation of farming

Medical officers of public health departments played a key role in the implementation of the Law for the Prevention of Offspring with Hereditary Diseases (July 14, 1933). They made many reports, filed a majority of applications for sterilization and acted as an expert or a judge in the Eugenics Court. This article presents accurate figures on the consequences of this law in Thuringia and Wuerttemberg and identifies the causes for the great differences between these 2 federal states.

In the mid-twentieth century in the Soviet Union, latent schizophrenia became an important concept and a matter of research and also of punitive psychiatry. This article investigates precursor concepts in early Russian psychiatry of the nineteenth century, and examines whether - as claimed in recent literature - Russian and Soviet research on latent schizophrenia was mainly influenced by the work of Eugen Bleuler.

Forced and coerced sterilization refers to the provision of permanent contraception without true informed consent. In Canada, this topic is particularly relevant to Indigenous Peoples because of this country's history of racialized eugenics programs. In this commentary, we briefly review the history of forced and coerced sterilization in Canada, describe the clinical considerations for health care providers who work with Indigenous patients in this context, and outline calls to action for health care providers and organizations to support the provision of culturally appropriate reproductive he

For many persons, 'Holocaust-abomination' is a fixed point on their moral compass: if anything can be evil, it was. Yet at least one of the justifications deployed by its perpetrators (the eugenics argument) involves widely-held values concerning human health and procreation. Hence persons endorsing many current activities based on those values (e.g. genetic counselling) have been charged with being on a morally deplorable slippery slope. This paper sketches the necessary structure of a moral position capable of consistently embracing those values without placing its occupants on that slippery
