Eugenol Reduces LDL Cholesterol and Hepatic Steatosis in Hypercholesterolemic Rats by Modulating TRPV1 Receptor.

Eugenol, a component of essential oils of medicinal and food plants, has a hypolipidemic effect in experimental animals although its mechanism of action is still unclear. This study aims to explore the mechanism of the hypolipidemic effect of eugenol in rats fed a high cholesterol and fat diet (HCFD). Eugenol significantly reduced total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoproteins (LDL), atherogenic index (AI) but not high-density lipoproteins (HDL) or triglycerides (TG). Eugenol also decreased steatosis and hepatic inflammation in liver sections, decreased hepatomegaly, and the hepatic marker e

Efficient Conversion of Renewable Unsaturated Fatty Acid Methyl Esters by Cross-Metathesis with Eugenol.

Cross-metathesis of unsaturated fatty acid methyl esters (methyl oleate (MO), methyl petroselinate (MP), and methyl erucate (ME), obtained from vegetable oils) with eugenol (obtained from clove oil) proceeded under green, mild conditions (in 2-propanol or ethanol at 50 °C) in the presence of a ruthenium-carbene catalyst (called a second-generation Grubbs catalyst). These metathesis reactions proceeded with both high conversion (>90% of MO, MP) and selectivity (>98%) even with low catalyst loading (0.1 mol % Ru).

Effects of eugenol on respiratory burst generation in newborn rat brainstem-spinal cord preparations.

Eugenol is contained in several plants including clove and is used as an analgesic drug. In the peripheral and central nervous systems, this compound modulates neuronal activity through action on voltage-gated ionic channels and/or transient receptor potential channels. However, it is unknown whether eugenol exerts any effects on the respiratory center neurons in the medulla. We examined the effects of eugenol on respiratory rhythm generation in the brainstem-spinal cord preparation from newborn rat (P0-P3). The preparations were superfused by artificial cerebrospinal fluid at 25-26 °C, and in

The Botanical Monoterpenes Linalool and Eugenol Flush-Out Nymphs of Triatoma infestans (Hemiptera: Reduviidae).

Monoterpenes are the main components of essential oils. Some members of this chemical family present insecticidal activity. Triatoma infestans (Klug) is the main vector of Chagas disease in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Perú. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of six monoterpenes (1,8-cineole, eugenol, linalool, menthol, α-terpineol, and thymol) on the locomotor and flushing out activity of T. infestans. A video tracking technique was used to evaluate the locomotor activity of nymphs exposed to different concentrations of these chemicals applied as films on filter paper.

Eugenol dilates mesenteric arteries and reduces systemic BP by activating endothelial cell TRPV4 channels.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Eugenol, a vanilloid molecule found in some dietary plants, relaxes vasculature in part via an endothelium-dependent process; however, the mechanisms involved are unclear. Here, we investigated the endothelial cell-mediated mechanism by which eugenol modulates rat mesenteric artery contractility and systemic BP. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: The isometric tension of rat mesenteric arteries (size 200-300 μm) was measured using wire myography; non-selective cation currents (ICat ) were recorded in endothelial cells using patch clamp electrophysiology. Mean arterial pressure (MA

Structural optimization of natural plant products: Construction and insecticidal activities study of eugenol's derivatives.

Crop pests are major biotic threats to agriculture and posing continuous challenges to global food security. Natural products provide valuable templates for pesticide discovery, and rational structural modification can enhance their potency, stability, and safety. In this study, a series of eugenol derivatives were synthesized and evaluated for insecticidal activity. Compound 3r showed remarkable toxicity against S. frugiperda (the LD50 value of contact toxicity and stomach toxicity were 0.079 mg /larva and 0.501 mg/mL, respectively.), 6.0-fold and 4.4-fold stronger than eugenol, and exhibited

Design, Synthesis, and Antileishmanial Activity of Novel C6-Substituted Eugenol Derivatives with a Triazole Linker.

Among tropical neglected diseases, leishmaniasis stands out. This parasitic infection occurs in numerous countries, affecting thousands of people worldwide. The currently available therapies present important limitations, including high toxicity, long treatment periods requiring parenteral administration, and the emergence of parasite resistance. Based on the known antileishmanial properties of eugenol and its derivatives, a series of novel disubstituted 1,2,3-triazoles was prepared via the classical 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction, employing a eugenol-azide derivative. These compounds were

A Comprehensive in vitro and in silico Assessment on Inhibition of CYP51B and Ergosterol Biosynthesis by Eugenol in Rhizopus oryzae.

Mucormycosis, also known as Zygomycosis, is a disease caused by invasive fungi, predominantly Rhizopus species belonging to the Order of Mucorales. Seeing from the chemistry perspective, heterocyclic compounds with an "azole" moiety are widely employed as antifungal agent for minimising the effect of mucormycosis as a prescribed treatment. These azoles serve as non-competitive inhibitors of fungal CYP51B by predominantly binding to its heme moiety, rendering its inhibition. However, long-term usage and abuse of azoles as antifungal medicines has resulted in drug resistance among certain fungal

The protective effect of eugenol against gentamicin-induced nephrotoxicity and oxidative damage in rat kidney.

Gentamicin (GM) is an effective aminoglycoside antibiotic against life-threatening Gram-negative bacteria. However, a major complication of therapeutic doses of GM is nephrotoxicity, which is believed to be related to the generation of reactive oxygen species. The present study was therefore aimed to investigate the protective effect of eugenol, a phenolic antioxidant, on GM-induced nephrotoxicity in Sprague-Dawley rats. Intramuscular injection of rats with GM (80 mg/kg body weight/day) for six consecutive days induced marked acute renal failure, manifested by a sharp significant increase in s

Endogenous Glandular Chemistry and Methyl Eugenol-derived Metabolites in the Pheromone Communication of Bactrocera umbrosa.

Bactrocera umbrosa (Fabricius) is an oligophagous fruit fly of economic importance that infests mainly Artocarpus fruits (Moraceae). The sexual communication system of this species is poorly understood, partly due to difficulties in establishing laboratory colonies. Males of B. umbrosa are strongly attracted to and voraciously fed on methyl eugenol (ME), a naturally occurring plant secondary compound. Here, we elucidate the endogenously produced and ME-derived chemical signals involved in the species' communication. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses of pheromonal glands revealed th
