An Epizootiological Report of the Re-emergence and Spread of a Lineage of Virulent Newcastle Disease Virus into Eastern Europe.

A number of contemporary outbreaks of Newcastle disease (ND) in Israel, Turkey, Georgia and Bulgaria have all been caused by a very similar viruses related to lineage 5a (genotype VIIa). Comparison with published ND virus (NDV) sequences suggests that this virus strain originated in South-East Asia and on introduction has circulated widely in backyard poultry in the Middle East and into Eastern Europe. An intracerebral pathogenicity index of 1.9 was obtained for a representative isolate from Bulgaria. In addition, the International Reference Laboratory for ND has characterized a molecular epid

Prevalence of the BLM nonsense mutation, p.Q548X, in ovarian cancer patients from Central and Eastern Europe.

A nonsense mutation, p.Q548X, in the BLM gene has recently been associated with an increased risk for breast cancer. In the present work, we investigated the prevalence of this Slavic founder mutation in 2,561 ovarian cancer cases from Russia, Belarus, Poland, Lithuania or Germany and compared its frequency with 6,205 ethnically matched healthy female controls. The p.Q548X allele was present in nine ovarian cancer patients of Slavic ancestry (0.5 %; including one case with concurrent BRCA1 mutation). The mutation was not significantly more frequent in cases than in controls (Mantel-Haenszel OR

HIV/hepatitis coinfection in eastern Europe and new pan-European approaches to hepatitis prevention and management.

ISSUES: HIV/hepatitis coinfection in Europe; WHO European clinical protocols on the management of people coinfected with HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B or C (HBV or HCV); stakeholder recommendations for better HCV services. INTRODUCTION: The increasing availability of highly active antiretroviral therapy throughout Europe and central Asia has changed comorbidity and mortality patterns among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) as liver disease has increasingly replaced AIDS as the cause of death in PLWHA in western European countries. The average prevalence of HCV among PLWHA is 40 per cent, and muc

The evolving HIV landscape in Central and Eastern Europe: progress, gaps, and future directions-Part I.

More than forty years after the beginning of the HIV epidemic, Central and Eastern Europe remains one of the few regions where new infections continue to rise. This narrative review provides an overview of the evolution of the epidemic in the region over the last fifteen years, highlighting epidemiologic trends, disparities in care, and persistent challenges in reaching the UNAIDS 95 95 95 targets. While Central European countries have made progress in expanding testing and access to treatment, Eastern Europe continues to face a rapidly growing epidemic driven by socioeconomic instability, lim

Novel Mutations in Titin Exon 363 With Different Phenotypes Including a Founder Mutation in Eastern Europe.

BACKGROUND: Titin, the largest human protein, is essential for sarcomere structure and function. The TTN gene, spanning 364 exons, undergoes extensive alternative splicing thus producing multiple isoforms. The M-band region, encoded by exons 359-364, plays a critical role in sarcomere integrity and mechanical stability. Exon 363 is of interest due to its involvement in titinopathies. Pathogenic truncating variants in this exon have been linked to recessive myopathies, including and mainly young-onset recessive distal titinopathy. METHODS: A multicenter study was conducted on six patients from

HIV care in times of the COVID-19 crisis - Where are we now in Central and Eastern Europe?

INTRODUCTION: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has hit the European region disproportionately. Many HIV clinics share staff and logistics with infectious disease facilities, which are now on the frontline in tackling COVID-19. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of the current pandemic situation on HIV care and continuity of antiretroviral treatment (ART) supplies in CEE countries. METHODS: The Euroguidelines in Central and Eastern Europe (ECEE) Network Group was established in February 2016 to review standards of care for HIV in the region. The group consists of professionals actively invol

Beyond the "European health divide": Functional limitation disparities among older adults in Central and Eastern Europe.

OBJECTIVES: Countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) generally have worse health outcomes than the rest of Europe, commonly referred to as the "European health divide". Regional specificities and historical pathways can shape health outcomes later in life, although variance of older adult functional limitation within CEE is understudied. METHODS: We used wave 9 (2021-2022) data (n = 18,903) from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) with mixed effects regression models to analyze difficulty with mobility, near vision, hearing, and episodic memory among those ages

Beyond HPV in Eastern Europe: Genotype Distribution, Molecular Biomarkers, Vaginal Microbiome, and Implications for Cervical Cancer Prevention.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection remains the principal etiological factor in cervical cancer development worldwide, with Eastern Europe continuing to demonstrate disproportionately high cervical cancer incidence and mortality rates. Regional disparities in screening implementation, vaccination coverage, and HPV genotype distribution contribute substantially to the persistent burden of HPV-related disease. In recent years, increasing attention has focused on molecular biomarkers and the vaginal microbiome as complementary approaches for improving cervical cancer prevention strategies. This

West Nile Virus Lineage 2 Spreads Westwards in Europe and Overwinters in North-Eastern Spain (2017-2020).

West Nile virus lineage 2 (WNV-L2) emerged in Europe in 2004; since then, it has spread across the continent, causing outbreaks in humans and animals. During 2017 and 2020, WNV-L2 was detected and isolated from four northern goshawks in two provinces of Catalonia (north-eastern Spain). In order to characterise the first Spanish WNV-L2 isolates and elucidate the potential overwintering of the virus in this Mediterranean region, complete genome sequencing, phylogenetic analyses, and a study of phenotypic characterisation were performed. Our results showed that these Spanish isolates belonged to
