The Czech debate on euthanasia illustrates with particular clarity how bioethical questions are inseparably intertwined with law, politics, and public discourse. Over the past decade, the issue has generated an exceptional number of monographs, creating a dense intellectual framework for reflection on dignity, autonomy, and end-of-life decision-making. Despite sustained scholarly engagement and repeated legislative initiatives, all proposals to legalize euthanasia have been rejected. The Constitutional Court has clarified that, while personal autonomy deserves respect, no constitutional right

This paper reviews the methods and approaches used to humanely anesthetize (render unconscious) and or euthanize (kill) laboratory fish (in research settings), with a specific focus on the fathead minnow. We surveyed the literature (333 scientific studies published 2004-2021) to examine euthanasia methods used for various life stages. Our findings showed that many published scientific papers do not provide an adequate description of anesthesia or euthanasia methods, particularly for larval fathead minnows. Over the two decades there was a 20% increase in the number of papers that described the

Euthanasia agents should induce a rapid and painless loss of consciousness, followed by cardiopulmonary arrest and subsequent brain death. Injectable drugs such as pentobarbital sodium are commonly used for laboratory rodents due to their quick and smooth action. However, the discontinuation of pharmaceutical-grade pentobarbital sodium and secobarbital sodium in Japan, along with a global shortage of pentobarbital in late 2020, has increased the demand for new injectable euthanasia drugs. In Japan, the combination of medetomidine, midazolam, and butorphanol (MMB), as well as a newer formulatio

Objective: In 2018, Herwig Czech (2018, 2020) and Edith Sheffer (2018) accused Hans Asperger of complicity in the Nazi child euthanasia program also because of his participation in the Gugging Commission. Method: We reviewed all documents related to the Commission to clarify Asperger's role. Results: The Commission consisted of officials from Vienna and Lower Danube and had the primary task of determining which children admitted to Gugging could attend an auxiliary school. As part of the investigations, a group of children was also diagnosed as incapable of learning and developing normally bas

Five countries now permit organ donation after euthanasia, on the basis of respecting donor autonomy. Some now openly consider performing euthanasia itself via organ extraction to better preserve organ viability, albeit in violation of the dead donor rule. Proponents argue that respect for patient autonomy requires this option; the dead donor rule is inapplicable since it fulfills donors' wishes. Other ethical arguments, not addressed herein, explore issues including dying at home, impact on clinicians, and societal faith in donation enterprise, but these concerns are not insurmountable. This

Zebrafish are often euthanized by overdose of anaesthesia. However, fish may have aversion towards some anaesthetics, and protocol efficacy varies between species. Using wild type adult Danio rerio, we assessed time to loss of opercular beat, righting, and startle reflexes during induction of anaesthetic overdose by either tricaine (0.5 g/L or 1 g/L), benzocaine (1 g/L), 2-phenoxyethanol (3 mL/L), clove oil (0.1%), isoeugenol (540 mg/L), lidocaine hydrochloride (1 g/L), or etomidate (50 mg/L). Initial screening demonstrated that benzocaine and buffered lidocaine hydrochloride achieved the fast

This prospective study evaluated oral transmucosal pentobarbital sodium at three doses in 110 wild-caught wild birds requiring euthanasia. Birds received transmucosal pentobarbital at five (430 mg/kg), six (516 mg/kg), and seven times (602 mg/kg) the intravenous dose for mammals. Time to first effects and loss of consciousness, presence of pupillary light and corneal reflexes, apnea, and asystole were recorded each minute. When asystole was not achieved at 5 minutes, IV pentobarbital was administered. Combining data for all doses, loss of consciousness occurred at a median (range) of 2 minutes

On-farm euthanasia of poultry, including turkeys, may not be possible for most people as birds gain weight; thus alternative mechanical methods have been developed. Our objective was to compare mechanical cervical dislocation with the Koechner Euthanizing Device (KED), captive bolt euthanasia with the Turkey Euthanasia Device (TED), head-only CO2 euthanasia (CO2), and electric euthanasia as potential humane methods for euthanizing individual, heavy turkeys. We assessed their impact on loss of brain stem reflexes, acute distress (corticosterone, CORT), kill success, torn skin, and blood loss. T

Euthanasia is one of the most commonly performed procedures in biomedical research, involving tens of millions of animals in North America and Europe every year. The use of sodium pentobarbital, injected intraperitoneally, for killing rodents is described as an acceptable technique by the AVMA and CCAC euthanasia guidelines. This drug and route are recommended over inhalant anesthetics, carbon dioxide, and physical methods for ethical and aesthetic reasons as well as efficiency. However, a growing body of evidence challenges the efficacy and utility of intraperitoneal pentobarbital. This metho

Organ donation after euthanasia has been performed more than 40 times in Belgium and the Netherlands together. Preliminary results of procedures that have been performed until now demonstrate that this leads to good medical results in the recipient of the organs. Several legal aspects could be changed to further facilitate the combination of organ donation and euthanasia. On the ethical side, several controversies remain, giving rise to an ongoing, but necessary and useful debate. Further experiences will clarify whether both procedures should be strictly separated and whether the dead donor r

BACKGROUND: An overdose of pentobarbital sodium administered i.v. is the most commonly used method of euthanasia in veterinary medicine. Determining death after the infusion relies on the observation of physical variables. However, it is unknown when cortical electrical activity and brainstem function are lost in a sequence of events before death.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To examine changes in the electrical activity of the cerebral cortex and brainstem during an overdose of pentobarbital sodium solution for euthanasia. Our testing hypothesis is that isoelectric pattern of the brain in support

The objective of this study was a comparison of pentobarbital and T 61 in the euthanasia of cattle. 397 cattle of different ages and breeds which had to be euthanised in the Clinic for Ruminants were enrolled. Following clinical examination, euthanasia was performed by intravenous injection of either 40 mg pentobarbital per kg body weight (BW) (0.1 ml Eutha 77) or 0.1 ml T 61/kg BW. The intervals between the beginning of injection and the following events were noted: collapse of the animal, cessation of respiration, cessation of cardiac action, disappearance of the palpebral and corneal reflex

In response to the general prohibition of euthanasia and assisted suicide, some right-to-die activists have developed non-medical methods to covertly hasten death. One such method is a "debreather," a closed system breathing device that laypersons can use to induce hypoxia for persons seeking euthanasia or assisted suicide. This article presents data from nine cases where the debreather was used on humans, resulting in eight deaths. The covert properties of the debreather make it almost impossible for medical examiners and law enforcers to detect its use. Clandestine behavior circumvents legal

Euthanasia is one of the most commonly performed procedures in laboratory animal settings. The method of euthanasia may affect experimental results in studies using animals and must be compatible with research objectives including subsequent tissue analyses. Our present study was performed to evaluate the effects of 7 euthanasia methods on sperm motility in mature rats. Rats were euthanized using CO2, 2 commercially available euthanasia solutions (Beuthanasia-D and Sleepaway), and 4 volatile anesthetics (enflurane, halothane, isoflurane, and sevoflurane). Rats euthanized by rapid decapitation

Three cases of suicidal Morbital intoxication were presented. Morbital is a veterinarian preparation for euthanasia of small animals. This preparation is an injectable solution containing 26.7 mg pentobarbitone and 133.3 mg pentobarbitone sodium per 1 ml. In cases no 1 and no 2 the drug was administered by intravenous self-injection, in case No 3--by oral administration. In all cases the suicide was attempted after alcohol consumption. In the first case only confusion and equilibrium disorder were observed. In the second case coma and flaccidity with hyporeflexia were noted. In the first two c

Catholic healthcare institutions worldwide are under increasing pressure to participate in euthanasia-often through forced implementation rather than chosen partnership, creating ethical challenges in balancing institutional conscience and theological integrity with their obligations to serve the broader public. This paper develops an interdisciplinary spatial ethics framework of healthcare space grounded in epistemology, environmental psychology, and Catholic moral theology; it examines three spatial dimensions-operational, missional, and moral-and Catholic social teaching principles of subsi

BACKGROUND: Euthanasia remains a contentious issue globally, with attitudes significantly shaped by cultural, religious, and societal factors. In Syria, over a decade of conflict has devastated the healthcare system and created unique ethical challenges for future physicians. This study aimed to assess the attitudes of Syrian medical students toward euthanasia and identify the key predictors influencing their views in a conflict, resource-deprived setting. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1,509 medical students from four major Syrian universities using an online survey. The

BACKGROUND: Spain's Organic Law 3/2021 regulates euthanasia or medical aid in dying (MAiD) for individuals with serious and incurable disease or chronic incapacitating conditions causing intolerable suffering. Psychiatric MAiD remains exceptional; decisions depend on well-documented refractoriness, preserved decision-making capacity, and intolerable mental suffering within a safeguarded legal process.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the clinical and legal course of a 24-year-old woman with childhood-onset obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) dominated by contamination/washing rituals, treated at

OBJECTIVES: Euthanasia for people with dementia is controversial and clinicians should decide how to respond to euthanasia requests. The authors aimed to investigate clinicians' perspectives on the acceptability of euthanasia for people with dementia, and differences between countries and personal characteristics potentially associated with acceptability.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, MEASUREMENTS: Cross-sectional vignette study as part of the CONT-END studies, in which the authors conducted interviews with clinicians from the Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany, USA, Japan, and Israel online

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a conditionally acceptable method for mouse euthanasia, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association Guidelines for the Euthanasia of Animals. In a 2012 Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) webinar, representatives of OLAW, the USDA and AAALACi stated that different grades of CO2, including nonpharmaceutical grades, are acceptable as long as the minimum purity is 99.0%. No systematic studies have been published on the effects of different grades of CO2 on animal welfare during euthanasia. In this study, mice were euthanized with one of 3 grades of CO2:
