Sensory evoked potentials in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

Eight patients presenting with intermediate or terminal evolution of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) were investigated by means of evoked potentials. Fifteen age-matched healthy subjects served as controls. The 8 patients had well-recognizable but simplified flash evoked potentials (FEPs) consisting of P1 and N2 waves followed by a single late positive (P2) deflection. Enlarged FEPs were found in 2 of the 8 patients. The somatosensory central conduction time was normal in 3 of 5 patients, and it resulted in upper normal limits or was moderately slowed in 2 patients. No enlarged somatosensory s

Visual evoked potentials in Prader-Willi syndrome.

Oculocutaneous, electrophysiological, and cytogenetic factors were evaluated in 14 patients with Prader-Willi syndrome and in three controls, two albinos and a normal observer. In a substantial number of PW patients chromosomal anomalies, particularly deletions of the long arm of chromosome 15 as well as hypopigmentation of hair, skin, and eye have been identified. In the genetic condition of albinism, hypopigmentation related to neural ectoderm derivatives is associated with reduced visual acuity, foveal hypoplasia, and aberrant retinogeniculocortical projections. The latter can be observed b

Somatosensory evoked potentials in cerebral aneurysm surgery.

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were used intraoperatively 25 cerebral aneurysm cases during the temporary occlusion of the parent artery of the aneurysm under moderate hypothermia. This technique of vascular occlusion is very useful in facilitating the dissection of difficult aneurysms as well as in reducing the risk of intraoperative rupture. Middle cerebral artery (MCA) cases in Hunt & Hess's grade III, undergoing early surgery, who had shown a transient neurological deficit at the time of subarachnoid haemorrhage or where vasospasm was evident in intraoperatively were prominent among

[Age changes in early somatosensory evoked potentials].

There are characteristic age-related changes in the cervical and early cortical somatosensory potentials evoked by electrical stimulation of the median nerve. At an age of 40 to 50 years the latencies of the potential components and the transit times start increasing progressively. Moreover, there is an attenuation of the cervical and an enhancement of the cortical components with age. Considering the presumed neuronal basis of the bioelectric phenomena the changes are discussed in connection with aging processes of the spinal ganglion cells, cortical pyramidal cells and the locus coeruleus.

[Effect of diazepam on somatosensory evoked potentials].

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded in 15 patients with extrapyramidal disturbances after intravenous administration of 10 mg of diazepam (Relanium, Polfa). Cortical SEP were recorded before and after operations and thalamic SEP were recorded during stereotaxic interventions on thalamic nuclei VL and Vim. The results demonstrated that diazepam had a significant positive influence on the recording of SEP, eliminating muscular artifacts caused by increased muscular tonus and extrapyramidal tremor. Diazepam had no evident effect on the SEP and caused no changes of the short-latenc

Auditory evoked response potentials in somatization disorder.

Event related potentials to frequently and infrequently occurring tones were recorded from 15 patients with somatization disorder, 10 patients with anxiety disorders and 15 normals. P3 component responses were of normal latency and amplitude in the somatizers, which suggests they had no apparent difficulty with certain aspects of processing novel, task-relevant stimuli. However, their N1 component responses to the frequent tones, which subjects had been instructed to ignore, were enhanced relative to each of the other groups. Moreover, there was no difference in N1 amplitude to the two types o

Spinal somatosensory evoked potentials in juvenile diabetes.

Spinal somatosensory evoked potentials to stimulation of the peroneal nerves in the popliteal fossa were recorded from 46 insulin-dependent neurologically normal patients with juvenile diabetes. Conduction velocities of these potentials were determined over proximal peroneal nerve, cauda equina, and spinal cord and were compared with those obtained from 46 age-matched control subjects. Mean values for overall spinal conduction velocity (L3-C7 spines) and conduction velocity over rostral spinal cord (T6-C7 spines) and peroneal nerve-cauda equina (stimulus to L3 spine) were lower in the diabetic

Pattern reversal evoked potentials in infantile spasms.

Visual evoked potentials in response to sinusoidal gratings of various spatial frequencies, alternating in contrast at 8 Hz were recorded from infants affected by an idiopathic form of infantile spasms (West syndrome). In two infants in whom the spasms began at 3 and 5 months of age, respectively, the VEP's were found to be depressed in amplitude at and around a spatial frequency of 3 and 5 c/deg, respectively. This midfrequency depression, which has never been reported in the literature for normal infants, suggests that infantile spasms in idiopathic patients may interfere at least temporaril

EEG and evoked potentials in precocious puberty.

We recorded brain stem auditory evoked potentials, pattern reversal visual evoked potentials and electroencephalograms in 19 children, 2-8 years old. Sixteen had precocious puberty and three had precocious adrenarche. Two of the children with precocious puberty had hypothalamic hamartomas, one had an optic glioma, and one had a history of hydrocephalus. The EEG was abnormal in 7 patients: three had diffuse slowing, and four showed possible paroxysmal features. BAEPs and VEPs were normal in all patients. This study showed no abnormalities in two conduction pathways of the central nervous system

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials during sleep apnea.

Auditory brainstem evoked potentials (ABEPs) were recorded from seven subjects with predominantly central sleep apnea. ABEPs were recorded during: (1) waking, (2) non-REM sleep between apneic episodes, (3) first half of apneas, and (4) second half of apneas. Latencies of vertex positive peaks III, V, and VI as well as the V-III interpeak latency difference were determined, and the effect of apnea phase on these measures were evaluated. The measures studied did not reveal chronic or acute functional abnormality of auditory brainstem, which may result from or cause apneic episodes during non-REM

Brainstem evoked potentials in adult sleep apnea.

Brainstem evoked potentials (BSEP) were recorded in 23 patients with adult sleep apnea (ASA). Three patients were studied with all-night polysomnography prior to our testing. They were categorized as having obstructive, central, or mixed sleep apnea depending on the predominant sleep findings. All patients with central sleep apnea had abnormal BSEP with prolongation of wave V. A majority of the remaining patients with obstructive sleep apnea and mixed sleep apnea had abnormal BSEP, but without specific configurations. These findings substantiate our hypothesis that brainstem dysfunction may pl

EEG and evoked potentials in the psychoses.

EEG and evoked potential (ER) findings in schizophrenic and affective psychoses were selectively reviewed. Both groups of psychoses appear to differ from normal in a number of EEG and ER characteristics; however, diagnostic specificity was suggested by relatively few findings. More encouraging result with respect to specificity have been obtained by subtyping the psychotic groups, e.g., process versus reactive schizophrenic, unipolar versus bipolar depression. Methodologic issues and directions for future research were discussed.

The effects of a supratentorial mass lesion on brain-stem auditory evoked potentials and short latency somatosensory evoked potentials.

Nineteen patients with unilateral supratentorial mass lesion and without any evident clinical signs of transtentorial herniation were studied with Computed Tomography (CT), brain-stem evoked potentials (BAEPs) and central conduction time (CCT) of short latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs). Sixteen had tumours, two had intracranial haematoma and one had chronic subdural haematoma. CT detected the initial signs of transtentorial herniation in every case. Preoperative I-V interpeak latency (IPL) was significantly (M + 2SD) prolonged in 26% of cases on the lesion side and in 21% of cases

Cochlear potentials and auditory evoked potentials in the caiman (Caiman crocodilus (L.)).

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) and round window compound action potentials (CAPs) in response to rarefaction and condensation clicks were recorded from anaesthetized and artificially respired caiman. The recorded wave forms were substantially different from the brain-stem and round window potentials recorded in mammals, including man. In particular, wave latencies were much longer than in mammals. Wave amplitudes increased and latencies decreased significantly and reversibly with increases in stimulus intensity and body temperature. The latencies of the first positive wave (P1)

Effects of carnosine on olfactory bulb EEG, evoked potentials and DC potentials.

Carnosine is a dipeptide found in great quantities in the primary olfactory nerve and has been suggested to be the neurotransmitter of the olfactory receptor axons. The aim of the present study was to describe some of its electrophysiological actions in the olfactory bulb (OB) of rabbits under anesthesia. Carnosine as a 10% solution in amounts of 2-5 microliter was injected to the OB at the level of the glomerular layer by means of a pipette attached to a Hamilton syringe. Average evoked potentials (AEPs) on the stimulation of the lateral olfactory tract (LOT-AEP), electroencephalographic (EEG

Confrontation field examination, perimetry, visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to pattern hemi-field stimulation and visual evoked spectrum array to flash stimulation were compared in 50 patients with homonymous hemianopsia. Visual field could be examined by confrontation in all patients and demonstrated the field defect in 96% of cases. Goldmann perimetry could only be performed in 60% of patients, but always quantitatively defined the margins of the defect. VEPs could only be tested in 77% of patients and demonstrated an abnormality in 79% of cases. VEPs were absent to stimulation of the affect

Trans-spinal myogenic evoked potentials: a novel intraoperative technique for localizing motor deficits following loss of transcranial motor evoked potentials.

Trans-spinal motor evoked potentials (TsMEP) represent a novel intraoperative neuromonitoring technique designed to localize motor deficits when transcranial motor evoked potentials (TcMEP) are lost or unreliable. This technique involves direct electrical stimulation of the spinal cord through pedicle screws using a train of biphasic square-wave pulses, with myogenic responses recorded from limb muscles. In the presented case of kyphoscoliosis correction, TsMEP was employed after TcMEP signals failed to recover despite corrective measures. Stimulation at various vertebral levels allowed TsMEP
