Visual evoked potentials in interictal migraine: no confirmation of abnormal habituation.

OBJECTIVE: We intended to study the effect of check size on visual evoked potential habituation in interictal migraine, using the faster 3 per second reversal rate and an improved analytic procedure with block-number blinding. BACKGROUND: Habituation in migraineurs has been extensively studied with visual evoked potentials. Despite discrepant results, possibly related to the use of different stimulus conditions, lack of habituation in the period between attacks is presently considered to be a neurophysiological hallmark of migraine. METHODS: Midoccipital monocular visual evoked potentials we

Visual evoked potentials in humans during recognition of emotional facial expressions.

Visual evoked potentials were recorded from the occipital, parietal, central, frontal, and posterior temporal areas of the cortex during recognition of emotionally positive, negative and neutral facial expressions and during passive observation in 22 right-handed healthy subjects. These studies showed that in the posterior temporal areas, the latencies of the N90, P150, and N180 waves of potentials evoked by faces with emotionally negative expressions were significantly shorter than those evoked by other types of facial stimuli. Differences were seen both on recognition and during passive obse

Electroretinogram and visual-evoked potentials in children with optic nerve coloboma.

The aim was to evaluate alterations in Visual-Evoked Potentials (VEP) and Electroretinogram (ERG) and discover whether these tests are useful for determining residual visual acuity in cases where a patient is unable to collaborate. Flash and, when possible, Transient Pattern Reversal Visual-Evoked Potentials and Maximal Response ERG were recorded in 8 children (under three years old) affected by different aspects of optic nerve coloboma. None of them had visual acuity evaluated because of poor collaboration. All examinations were carried out using skin electrodes. Amplitude of the a and b comp

Visual evoked potentials for prediction of neurodevelopmental outcome in preterm infants.

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) have proved to be accurate predictors of outcome in term infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. Parallels between term asphyxia and hypoxic-ischemic injury in the preterm brain suggested the hypothesis that VEPs may predict the development of periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) and later cerebral palsy. 123 infants less than 32 weeks' gestational age were enrolled in the study. VEPs were done in the first 3 weeks of life (usually first week). VEPs did show a statistically significant association with PVL (p < 0.04) although false-positive recordings were t

Three-dimensional human pattern visual evoked potentials. II. Multiple sclerosis patients.

Pattern visual evoked potentials were obtained from 46 patients with definite relapsing/remitting multiple sclerosis, using both a conventional 5-channel occipital array and a 3-D recording technique consisting of three bipolar derivations approximating the three dimensions of space. These three orthogonal wave forms were displayed as a 3-D Lissajous trajectory for each subject. Two of the 15 patients with completely normal conventional pattern VEPs had abnormalities of the orientation of the B-C curvilinear segment of the 3-D pattern VEPs. Delays in the first major occipital positive componen

Effects of scopolamine on visual evoked potentials in aging and dementia.

The unusual combination of a normal pattern reversal VEP and a delayed flash VEP has been reported in patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT). Hyoscine hydrobromide has been reported to produce a similar VEP abnormality in young, healthy subjects. In the present study, we assessed the relative sensitivity of DAT patients and healthy young, middle-aged and elderly subjects to temporary cholinergic blockade. We report VEP latency values following 3 doses of scopolamine and after a peripheral anticholinergic agent. Flash P2 latency was not significantly slower in DAT patients than in the

Pattern electroretinograms and visual-evoked potentials in glaucoma and multiple sclerosis.

Steady-state visual-evoked potentials and electroretinograms were simultaneously recorded in four patients with glaucoma and in five patients with multiple sclerosis. The stimuli included a homogenous field and a 2.3 cycles per degree sinusoidal grating that were counter-phase modulated at the rate of 7.5 Hz. We used narrow bandwidth spectral analysis to measure the response amplitudes and signal-to-noise ratios. Transient pattern visual-evoked potentials (1 Hz) were also measured for latency in each eye. We found abnormal pattern electroretinograms, based on the absence of a significant secon

Visual evoked potentials in normal subjects and patients with multiple sclerosis.

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) by checkerboard pattern-reversal stimulation were recorded in 70 subjects aged 10--69 years and in 100 patients with definite, probable or possible multiple sclerosis (MS). Longer latencies and smaller amplitudes of the major positive component were found in male subjects, in old subjects and when the amplifier's band-pass was narrowed. Subjects 10--14 years old had longer latencies and higher amplitudes than mature adults. Based on findings in the normal material, the following three criteria were used in evaluating the recordings from patients: the latency, th

Serial recording of visual and somatosensory evoked potentials in multiple sclerosis.

Pattern reversal visual evoked potentials (VEP) and short-latency somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were recorded at frequent intevals in 7 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). A persistent increase in latency of VEP was found to accompany evanescent visual symptoms. SEP, whether normal or abnormal, remained stable in patients without relapse. In 3 patients with active disease the cervical SEP was labile but this could not be related to specific clinical changes. In 51 patients VEP were recorded on two or more occasions at varying intervals. There was a reasonable correlation between alt

Monocular and binocular visual evoked potentials before and after cataract surgery.

Visual evoked cortical potentials (VEPs) were recorded from an individual with a mature cataract in one eye. Stimulation was both monocular and binocular and VEPs were obtained from three occipital scalp sites. Comparisons of recordings taken prior to cataract removal and after removal showed a dramatic increase in amplitude of potentials derived through stimulation of the affected eye. Slight differences in hemispheric amplitude prior to surgery suggest a greater degree of opacity in one portion of the affected lens.

[Recording of visual evoked potentials in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis].

The authors report the results of recording EVP obtained by pattern reversal in 20 controls and 43 patients with "established", "probable" or "possible" MS on the basis of MacAlpine's criteria. Whilst the latency of the wave 1 of the EVP appeared stable in the controls (107.5 msec +/- 7.46), lengthening of the latency of the EVP was seen in 77p. 100 of cases, confirming involvement of the visual pathways, though bulbar neuritis had been known clinically in only 28 p. 100 of patients. The value of this method of recording EVP in contributing to the diagnosis of DS is discussed.

Changes in the Parameters of Visual Evoked Potentials in Media Opacities.

PURPOSE: This study compared flash visual evoked potentials (VEPs) parameter differences between eyes with unilateral opaque media and their normal contralateral counterparts. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included 178 patients with unilateral media opacity and normal contralateral eye in each patient. The diseased eyes had normal ultrasonographic findings and were candidates for keratoplasty or anterior segment reconstruction. The patients underwent electrophysiological testing by the flash VEPs recording with the use of 1.4Hz (transient) and 8Hz (flicker) frequencies. RESULTS: The medians of P2

Plasticity of visual evoked potentials in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1.

OBJECTIVE: The inability to properly process visual information has been frequently associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Based on animal studies, the cause of cognitive disabilities in NF1 is hypothesized to arise from decreased synaptic plasticity. Visual cortical plasticity in humans can be investigated by studying visual evoked potentials (VEPs) in response to visual stimulation. METHODS: VEP plasticity was assessed by measuring the increase of the peak amplitudes C1, P1, and N1 induced by 10-min modulation of checkerboard reversals in 22 adult NF1 patients and 30 controls. VEP

Fractal Dimension Analysis of Transient Visual Evoked Potentials: Optimisation and Applications.

PURPOSE: The visual evoked potential (VEP) provides a time series signal response to an external visual stimulus at the location of the visual cortex. The major VEP signal components, peak latency and amplitude, may be affected by disease processes. Additionally, the VEP contains fine detailed and non-periodic structure, of presently unclear relevance to normal function, which may be quantified using the fractal dimension. The purpose of this study is to provide a systematic investigation of the key parameters in the measurement of the fractal dimension of VEPs, to develop an optimal analysis
