Prognostic value of exercise blood pressure: role of fitness and exercise training.

Abnormal blood pressure (BP) responses to exercise, both hypertensive and hypotensive, are strong independent predictors of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality across populations. Higher cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with lower submaximal exercise BP across populations. Better vascular function and modulation of the autonomic nervous system likely drive this relation. Despite higher absolute BP values, athletes demonstrate lower BP responses relative to metabolic demand. These observations highlight a critical limitation of using absolute thresholds and support indexing exercise B

Determinants of Reclassification of Exercise Performance Across Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing Prediction Equations.

RATIONALE: Volume of oxygen uptake at peak exercise (V̇O₂peak) is a key indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness used to assess surgical risk and clinical trial outcomes. However, multiple prediction equations exist for its interpretation, often yielding inconsistent classifications of exercise performance. OBJECTIVE: To determine how different prediction equations affect exercise performance classification and identify factors contributing to its variability. METHODS: We performed a post-hoc analysis of cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) data collected from 332 never-smoking flight attendan

Muscle-Tumor Crosstalk in Exercise Oncology: Exercise-Induced Myokines and Cancer Cachexia.

Exercise-induced myokines, such as IL-6, irisin, and myostatin, play crucial roles in mediating systemic adaptations and modulating tumor progression. This narrative review synthesizes evidence on how regular moderate-intensity exercise affects the myokine network within the tumor microenvironment (TME) of solid tumors. Results from the 86 included studies indicate that structured training (aerobic: 45-65% VO2 max; resistance: 45-70% 1RM) enhances the expression of beneficial myokines that support immune surveillance, reduce inflammation, and improve muscle-tumor cross-talk. IL-6 demonstrates

Plasma catecholamines in patients undergoing invasive cardiopulmonary exercise test for exercise intolerance.

BACKGROUND: Invasive cardiopulmonary exercise testing (iCPET) combines traditional cardiopulmonary exercise testing with invasive hemodynamic measurements to assess exercise intolerance, which can be caused by preload insufficiency (PI), characterized by low ventricular filling pressures and reduced cardiac output during exertion. We hypothesize that plasma catecholamine levels at rest and during exercise correlate with hemodynamic parameters in PI. METHODS: We included adult patients who underwent iCPET for exercise intolerance and had plasma catecholamines measured at rest and peak exercise

Abnormal pulmonary hemodynamics during exercise is associated with exercise capacity in COPD.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a frequent complication in COPD and it is associated with decreased exercise capacity and poor prognosis. We hypothesized that even in COPD patients without significant PH at rest, abnormal pulmonary hemodynamics during exercise affect exercise capacity. METHODS: Consecutive COPD patients with clinically indicated right heart catheterization and resting mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) < 25 mmHg and age- and sex-matched controls with the same limits of pulmonary hemodynamics but no chronic lung disease who underwent clinical work-up including

[Exercise preconditioning reduces exercise-induced risks of cardiovascular events in obese population].

Obesity is an independent risk factor of cardiovascular diseases. Epidemiological studies have shown that obesity induces the production of inflammatory factors and changes in cardiac hemodynamics, remodeling and function, leading to myocardial damage and heart diseases. The positive effect of exercise on the cardiovascular system has been widely confirmed, while the acute cardiovascular stress caused by exercise cannot be ignored. Compared with the general population, obese people were more prone to arrhythmia and have a higher risk of cardiovascular events during exercise, due to their abnor

A century of exercise physiology: lung fluid balance during and following exercise.

PURPOSE: This review recalls the principles developed over a century to describe trans-capillary fluid exchanges concerning in particular the lung during exercise, a specific condition where dyspnea is a leading symptom, the question being whether this symptom simply relates to fatigue or also implies some degree of lung edema. METHOD: Data from experimental models of lung edema are recalled aiming to: (1) describe how extravascular lung water is strictly controlled by "safety factors" in physiological conditions, (2) consider how waning of "safety factors" inevitably leads to development of

Exercise and education for knee osteoarthritis-What are accredited exercise physiologists providing?

OBJECTIVES: Clinical guidelines for the non-surgical management of knee osteoarthritis (OA) recommend exercise and education. This study aimed to evaluate the extent to which accredited exercise physiologists (AEPs) deliver exercise and education for knee OA and how it aligns with clinical practice guidelines. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. METHOD: An online survey targeted to AEPs across Australia to understand the exercise and education content of their interventions for knee OA. Likert scale and multiple-choice questions were used to measure responses relating to exercise prescription. T

Experimental effects of acute exercise duration and exercise recovery on mood state.

OBJECTIVE: Accumulating evidence suggests that, in addition to various psychosocial parameters, affective responses to exercise play an important role in subserving future exercise behavior. This study comprehensively evaluated whether acute exercise duration and recovery period influenced the relationship between moderate-intensity walking exercise and mood profile. METHOD: We employed a randomized controlled cross-over trial. Participants completed two laboratory visits, separated by one-week. One of the visits involved a mood profile assessment with no exercise, while the other visit invol

Dynamic exercise training prevents exercise pressor reflex overactivity in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

Cardiovascular responses to exercise are exaggerated in hypertension. We previously demonstrated that this heightened cardiovascular response to exercise is mediated by an abnormal skeletal muscle exercise pressor reflex (EPR) with important contributions from its mechanically and chemically sensitive components. Exercise training attenuates exercise pressor reflex function in healthy subjects as well as in heart failure rats. However, whether exercise training has similar physiological benefits in hypertension remains to be elucidated. Thus we tested the hypothesis that the EPR overactivity m

Exercise-induced muscle damage following dance and sprint-specific exercise in females.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of studies investigating exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) in females and only one in response to dance-type exercise. This study sought to firstly elucidate the physiological profile of EIMD following a dance-specific protocol, and second to compare the magnitude of damage to that experienced following a sport-specific protocol in physically active females. METHODS: Twenty-nine female recreational dancers (19±1 years) were recruited. Participants completed either a dance-specific protocol (DPFT; N.=15) or sport-specific repeated sprint protocol (SSRS; N.=14

Dialysis exercise team: the way to sustain exercise programs in hemodialysis patients.

Patients affected by end-stage renal disease (ESRD) show quite lower physical activity and exercise capacity when compared to healthy individuals. In addition, a sedentary lifestyle is favoured by lack of a specific counseling on exercise implementation in the nephrology care setting. Increasing physical activity level should represent a goal for every dialysis patient care management. Three crucial elements of clinical care may contribute to sustain a hemodialysis exercise program: a) involvement of exercise professionals, b) real commitment of nephrologists and dialysis professionals, c) ind

Bone mass during growth: the effects of exercise. Exercise and mineral accrual.

Intense exercise during childhood and adolescence may result in primary amenorrhea and low peak bone mineral density (BMD). After puberty, exercise may result in secondary amenorrhea and bone loss. Higher BMD in amenorrheic athletes than amenorrheic sedentary persons suggests that exercise may partly offsets the effects of amenorrhea. To examine this possibility, we measured BMD (g/cm2) by dual x-ray absorptiometry in 32 ballet dancer and 23 healthy controls of comparable age with regular menstrual cycles, 34 pre-pubertal female gymnasts bone age 8.9 +/- 0.2 years and 37 girls matched by bone

Independence of exercise hyperpnea and acidosis during high-intensity exercise in ponies.

We investigated arterial PCO2 (PaCO2) and pH (pHa) responses in ponies during 6-min periods of high-intensity treadmill exercise. Seven normal, seven carotid body-denervated (2 wk-4 yr) (CBD), and five chronic (1-2 yr) lung (hilar nerve)-denervated (HND) ponies were studied during three levels of constant load exercise (7 mph-11%, 7 mph-16%, and 7 mph-22% grade). Mean pHa for each group of ponies became alkaline in the first 60 s (between 7.45 and 7.52) (P less than 0.05) at all work loads. At 6 min pHa was at or above rest at 7 mph-11%, moderately acidic at 7 mph-16% (7.32-7.35), and markedly

How do virtual exercise technology and social presence influence motivation to exercise?

INTRODUCTION: Virtual technology offers a promising tool for encouraging engagement in exercise, as it can provide the user with enhanced visual stimuli and accessible metrics; however, the specific features within that technology that contribute to motivation and participation require further investigation. This study examined how different visual displays and the presence of a second rider influenced motivation to exercise using virtual technology. METHODS: Twenty-four young adults completed a 3-km cycling course on the same virtual track under three counterbalanced conditions including (a)

Mindful exercise intervention on exercise affect and behavior: A randomized controlled trial.

This study examined whether a four-week mindful exercise intervention could enhance affective responses and promote exercise intention and behavior. We also tested whether affective valence during exercise and post-exercise enjoyment predicted these outcomes. Ninety-seven insufficiently active adults in the intention or preparation stage of exercise behavior were randomly assigned to mindfulness, distraction, or control conditions. Participants engaged in low- to moderate-intensity exercise two to three times per week for four weeks while receiving a guided mindfulness audio, a neutral podcast
