Infection with intestinal helminth (Hymenolepis diminuta) impacts exploratory behavior and cognitive processes in rats by changing the central level of neurotransmitters.

Parasites may significantly affect the functioning of the host organism including immune response and gut-brain-axis ultimately leading to alteration of the host behavior. The impact of intestinal worms on the host central nervous system (CNS) remains unexplored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of intestinal infection by the tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta on behavior and functions of the CNS in rats. The 3 months old animals were infected, and the effects on anxiety, exploration, sensorimotor skills and learning processes were assessed at 18 months in Open Field (OF), Novel Obj

Functional Remodeling of the Maternal Brain: Linking Brain c-Fos Dynamics to Behavioral Changes in Pregnancy: An Exploratory Study.

As an exploratory study with a limited sample size, this work systematically examined pregnancy-induced changes in neural activity by analyzing c-Fos expression across the whole brain of pregnant mice. The results showed that 36 brain regions-including the cortex, hippocampus, thalamus, and hypothalamus-exhibited dynamic changes in c-Fos expression throughout pregnancy. Behavioral tests revealed that pregnant mice displayed increased anxiety-like behavior in the elevated plus maze. Group-level descriptive correlation analysis indicated nominal directional trends between regional c-Fos expressi

Crude oil, hypoxia, or their combination affects adult brain morphology and offspring growth but not social and exploratory behaviors in zebrafish.

Environmental stressors can impact fish populations by altering individuals' behavior and physiology. Exposure in fish to crude oil or hypoxia affects physiological processes and leads to behavioral impairments such as increased anxiety-like behavior and aggression. However, the effects of parental exposure to crude oil and hypoxia on the F1 offspring remain poorly explored. We investigated the growth and brain morphology of parental zebrafish exposed for five weeks to: 1) Control conditions (normoxic water, control diet); 2) Hypoxia (60 % air saturation hypoxic water, control diet); 3) HEWAF

A single dose of ethanol in adult mice transiently alters the organization of spontaneous exploratory behaviors in a dark open field.

Acute exposure to ethanol is known to produce significant alterations to the functions of the hippocampus leading to "blackouts" which are defined as temporary disruptions to the encoding and retention of memories. The hippocampus has a prominent role in generating representations of spatial location and contributes to spatial navigation. In open environments, spatial exploratory behaviors are organized such that animals spontaneously alternate between long duration stops (absence of movement) at a specific home base location and exploratory trips or progressions (locomotion between locations)

HIV-1 Tat and morphine interactions dynamically shift striatal monoamine levels and exploratory behaviors over time.

Despite the advent of combination anti-retroviral therapy (cART), nearly half of people infected with HIV treated with cART still exhibit HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). HAND can be worsened by co-morbid opioid use disorder. The basal ganglia are particularly vulnerable to HIV-1 and exhibit higher viral loads and more severe pathology, which can be exacerbated by co-exposure to opioids. Evidence suggests that dopaminergic neurotransmission is disrupted by HIV exposure, however, little is known about whether co-exposure to opioids may alter neurotransmitter levels in the striatu

Behavioral Barriers to Stop Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting in South Ethiopia: An Exploratory Qualitative Study of the Perspective of Women.

BACKGROUND: Female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C) is an act that violates the rights of girls and women and causes serious medical complications. Approximately 200 million women have undergone circumcision in 31 countries. Ethiopia, in particular, has the largest number of women who undergone FGM/C. Unfortunately, there has been minimal research into the reasons for this high prevalence in the country. Hence, this study has been conducted to explore behavioral barriers to stopping FGM/C in Southern Ethiopia. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was employed from October to Novembe

Exploratory evaluation of baseline cognition as a predictor of perceived benefit in a study of behavioral therapy for urinary incontinence in Parkinson disease.

AIMS: While behavior-based pelvic floor muscle exercise therapy is an effective treatment for overactive bladder in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, cognitive function may be a predictor of rehabilitation outcomes. METHODS: In a planned exploratory analysis, participants who had a Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) with a score ≥18 who were randomized in a clinical trial to behavioral treatment were classified by perceived improvement (Benefit vs. No Benefit) as reported on a validated Satisfaction and Benefit Questionnaire. Exploratory Study of rTMS Neuromodulation Effects on Electrocortical Functional Measures of Performance in an Oddball Test and Behavioral Symptoms in Autism.

There is no accepted pathology to autism spectrum disorders (ASD) but research suggests the presence of an altered excitatory/inhibitory (E/I) bias in the cerebral cortex. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) offers a non-invasive means of modulating the E/I cortical bias with little in terms of side effects. In this study, 124 high functioning ASD children (IQ > 80, <18 years of age) were recruited and assigned using randomization to either a waitlist group or one of three different number of weekly rTMS sessions (i.e., 6, 12, and 18). TMS consisted of trains of 1.0 Hz frequenc

Using Automated Coding of Nonverbal Behavior During a Suicide Assessment to Inform Risk Detection: Mixed Cross-Sectional and Exploratory Prospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Suicide assessments have historically privileged verbal report by the patient, despite the fact that nonverbal behaviors of patients and their clinicians may convey important affective and interpersonal information about suicide risk. Recent advances in computational science enable efficient characterization of rich nonverbal data. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to use automated coding to test whether facial action and head motion exhibited by young adults and their clinical interviewers during a widely used suicide assessment can identify suicidal participants. METHODS: Participant

Chronic Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol treatment has dose-dependent effects on open field exploratory behavior and [3H] SR141716A receptor binding in the rat brain.

AIMS: Acute and chronic Δ9-THC exposure paradigms affect the body differently. More must be known about the impact of chronic Δ9-THC on cannabinoid-1 (CB1R) and mu-opioid (MOR) receptor levels in the brain. The present study examined chronic Δ9-THC's effects on CB1R and MOR levels and locomotor activity. MAIN METHODS: Adolescent Sprague-Dawley rats were given daily intraperitoneal injections of Δ9-THC [0.75mg/kg (low dose or LD) or 2.0 mg/kg (high dose or HD)] or vehicle for 24 days, and locomotion in the open field was tested after the first and fourth weeks of chronic Δ9-THC exposure.
