Research has documented that maternal expressed emotion-criticism (EE-Crit) from the Five-Minute Speech Sample (FMSS) predicts family conflict and children's externalizing behavior in clinical and community samples. However, studies have not examined EE-Crit in maltreating or separated/divorced families, or whether these family risks exacerbate the links between EE-Crit and family conflict and externalizing behavior. The current study examined the associations between maternal EE-Crit, maltreatment, and separation/divorce, and whether maltreatment and separation/divorce moderated associations

Journal of clinical child and adolescent psychology : the official journal for the Society of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, American Psychological Association, Division 532014eng
This study examined risk, vulnerability, and protective processes of parental expressed emotion for children's peer relationships in families living in emergency shelters with high rates of exposure to parental violence (EPV). Parental criticism and negativity were hypothesized to exacerbate the association between EPV and poorer peer relations, whereas parental warmth was expected to buffer this association. Participants included 138 homeless parents (M = 30.77 years, SD = 6.33, range = 20.51-57.32 years; 64% African American, 12% Caucasian, 24% other) and their 4-to 6-year-old children (43.5

BACKGROUND: Expressed emotion is a construct that has been used for the past three decades to describe family members' criticism, hostility and emotional involvement with a mentally ill relative within the context of family interactions and caregiving. In Western countries this construct is used as an outcome measure of interventions for families of people with schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders, but the use of this construct in Chinese populations is somewhat limited.
OBJECTIVE: To test the reliability and validity of a refined Chinese version of the 52-item Level of Expressed Emotio

In a test of Hooley's (1987) attributional model of expressed emotion (EE), attributions for negative behaviors and events in patients' lives were examined in relatives of 74 outpatients with panic disorder with agoraphobia or obsessive-compulsive disorder. Attributions were extracted from 10-minute problem-solving interactions between relatives and patients, whereas EE was assessed during a separate interview with the relative. Consistent with prior findings in relatives of individuals with other disorders, relatives who made greater proportions of attributions of patient responsibility demon

The reliability of expressed emotion (EE) ratings by the Camberwell Family Interview (CFI) and characteristics of EE were evaluated in families of patients with mood disorders in Japan. The subjects were 27 patients with mood disorders and 31 members of their families. The CFI was carried out with the family members. EE was rated by two raters independently, and the inter-rater reliability was evaluated according to Spearman's correlation coefficient by ranks and the kappa-value. The distribution of subscales of EE in these subjects was compared with that in families of patients with schizophr

While numerous studies have concluded that high expressed emotion (EE) in relatives predicts relapse in schizophrenia, other aspects of patient outcome have not been well studied. Our purpose was to determine the extent to which family dynamics and expressed emotion may predict variance in patient social adjustment when controlling for symptom severity. Sixty-nine schizophrenic outpatients and 108 of their relatives participated. Relatives' EE was assessed, and they were administered the FACES III for perceptions of family cohesion and adaptability. Patients were interviewed at about the same

We made an analysis on the scaling methods of Expressed Emotion Scales, which was noticeable as one of powerful psycho-social factors to predict the relapse of the schizophrenics, to find out the unitary conceptual substance in the family. The research was conducted at 3 psychiatric hospitals in Chiba. 72 out of 93 cases were followed up after 9 months. The results were as follows. There was not internal consistency in EE sub-scales at all, but there was two-dimensional structure. It was suggested important to enhance the relapse predictability of EE scales that 1) EE should be assessed by mea

This study aimed to clarify characteristics of parents with high expressed emotion (EE) and related factors among parents of adults with schizophrenia. In total, 73 (25.3%) of the 289 parents had high EE (Family Attitude Scale [FAS] score ≥60), and 216 (74.7%) had low EE (FAS score <60). A multiple logistic regression analysis showed that high EE parents were more distressed (odds ratio [OR] = 1.27; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.16-1.39) and experienced more physical violence from their adult children with schizophrenia (OR = 2.86; 95% CI = 1.28-6.43); the children with schizophrenia had be

Expressed emotion (EE) is a family environmental construct that assesses how much criticism, hostility, and/or emotional over-involvement a family member expresses about a patient (Hooley, Annual Review of Clinical Psychology, 2007, 3, 329). Having high levels of EE within the family environment has generally been associated with poorer patient outcomes for schizophrenia and a range of other disorders. Paradoxically, for African-American patients, high-EE may be associated with a better symptom course (Rosenfarb, Bellack, & Aziz, Journal of Abnormal Psychology, 2006, 115, 112). However, this f

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe and generally chronic disorder that presents patients and their family members with multiple challenges. Little is currently known about how much family members of patients with BPD know about this disorder. Thirty-two family members of BPD patients were assessed for their level of knowledge about BPD. Knowledge level was then correlated with family members' burden, depression, distress, and expressed emotion. Contrary to expectation, greater knowledge about BPD was associated with higher levels of family members' burden, distress, depression,

Parkinson's disease (PD), a range of neuropsychiatric symptoms, including anhedonia, depression, emotional control, and cognitive deficits, may manifest. This study aims to investigate the impact of anhedonia, emotional regulation, and emotional expression on PD. The research included 68 PD patients and 60 healthy controls. Both groups were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Emotional Expression Scale (EES), the Short Form of the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), and the Clinician-Administered Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS), all administered

OBJECTIVE: Based on a variety of empirical evidence obtained within the theoretical framework of embodiment theory, we considered it likely that motor disorders in Tourette's syndrome (TS) would have emotional consequences for TS patients. However, previous research using emotional facial categorization tasks suggests that these consequences are limited to TS patients with obsessive-compulsive behaviors (OCB).
METHOD: These studies used long stimulus presentations which allowed the participants to categorize the different emotional facial expressions (EFEs) on the basis of a perceptual analys

Empathic accuracy-the ability to infer others' emotions accurately-is associated with positive social functioning. To be empathically accurate, individuals must base their inferences on accurate cues. Consequently, expressive accuracy-the extent to which individuals accurately communicate their self-reported affect-may be a constraint on others' empathic accuracy. Though affective communication involves both perceivers (i.e., those who make inferences) and targets (i.e., those being judged), prior research has focused on perceivers. Here, we examined the relative contribution of perceivers and

BACKGROUND: Expressed Emotion (EE) is a well-established predictor of schizophrenia relapse, but concerns remain regarding the content validity of its traditional components-criticism, hostility, and emotional overinvolvement (EOI). Recent research suggests a covert EE dimension (disassociation, apathy) unmeasured by current scales. This study developed and validated a self-report EE scale, the Comprehensive Expressed Emotion Scale (CEES), to reconceptualize EE.
METHODS: 319 adults with schizophrenia in Mainland China completed CEES, relevant Family Environment Scale-Chinese Version (FES-CV)

Emotional climate or expressed emotion (EE) has been examined in families of white descent who have a family member with schizophrenia but few studies have been conducted in Asian or Chinese families. This study tested the utility of the five-minute interview (FMI), adjective checklist (ACL) and family attitude scale (FAS) in a sample of Chinese family members in Beijing, in an attempt to introduce useful measures of EE into practice. A sample of 51 family members were interviewed and administered the three instruments. A total of 29.4% of families were found to be high-EE critical and 13.7% h

Emotional alignment during conversation, defined as the mutual recognition of and exchange of appropriate emotional expressions between interlocutors, is essential for successful interactions, and can be elicited by both verbal content and facial expressions. But do facial expressions produced during conversation correspond more directly to the emotion expressed through the interlocutor’s words or their facial movements? Are different emotions, expressed via facial expressions and storytelling, equally influential on listeners’ emotional processing? To address this, we examined emotional align

While the use of personal protective equipment protects healthcare workers against transmissible disease, it also obscures the lower facial regions that are vital for transmitting emotion signals. Previous studies have found that face coverings can impair recognition of emotional expressions, particularly those that rely on signals from the lower regions of the face, such as disgust. Recent research on the individual differences that may influence expression recognition, such as emotional intelligence, has shown mixed results. In the current investigation, we conducted two experiments to build

Emotional processing abilities are difficult to measure psychometrically. Ultimately their quantification has to rely on 'subjective' judgment thereby leaving open the problem of response biases. Assessments of autonomic arousal similarly provide a mere unspecified measurement of a specific emotion. A standardized mood induction procedure capable of obtaining reliable happy and sad mood changes in healthy subjects was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of this procedure. We performed a two-part experiment using a rater-based analysis of facial expressions. This entailed analyzing the emotio
