Several transscleral suturing techniques require intricate surgical maneuvers and are associated with an increased risk for surgical trauma. We describe a new scleral fixation method that combines the advantages of temporary haptic externalization and injector implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). After IOL insertion with the injector, each haptic is externalized through 2 adjacent corneal incisions. A 10-0 polypropylene suture loop is made at each exposed haptic and transscleral IOL fixation performed. This modified technique is a safe and effective way to fixate the IOL in eyes with ins

INTRODUCTION: Adhesive capsulitis, a condition marked by pain and stiffness of the shoulder, can have a frustrating clinical course for patients and health care professionals. Despite huge research interest, a universally accepted and used definition of clinical criteria for the diagnosis of adhesive capsulitis is currently still lacking. This systematic review aimed to identify diagnostic values for clinical examinations tests used in the diagnosis of adhesive capsulitis.

A wide range of pathology involving the external, middle, and inner ear contribute to conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. Diagnostic imaging plays a critical role in the evaluation and management of hearing loss. High resolution computed tomography (CT) of the temporal bone and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are the preferred imaging modalities to evaluate the ear structures for causes of hearing loss, with the specific type of hearing loss and location of defect dictating which type of imaging is preferred. In general, the external auditory canal, middle ear space, mastoid, petrous a

BACKGROUND: Hip dysplasia is characterized by insufficient acetabular coverage around the femoral head, which leads to instability, pain, and injury. Periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) aims to restore acetabular coverage and function, but its effects on capsular mechanics and joint stability are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of PAO on capsular mechanics and joint range of motion in dysplastic hips.
METHODS: Twelve cadaveric dysplastic hips (denuded to bone and capsule) were mounted onto a robotic tester and tested in multiple positions: (1) full extension, (2

A clinicopathological study of parkinsonian syndrome witch occurred after stroke, is done by the authors. That is a retrospective study concerning 2 anatomic cases from 21 vascular parkinsonism. All the patients were admitted in the clinique neurologique de Fann from 1970 to 1990. They were 15 men and 6 women. Their age ranged between 45 to 75 years (mean 59.66). The 2 autopsied cases had lesions located in the thalamus as the superior part and a discreet cortical atrophy in the one case, and in the other case, we can see similar lesions in the right external capsule and in the inferior part o

Work-related stress and burnout are increasingly prevalent, yet their neural correlates remain poorly understood. Kokubun and colleagues recently reported that fractional anisotropy in the superior longitudinal fasciculus, internal capsule, and external capsule statistically links workload to cynicism in healthy adults. While the original authors acknowledged several limitations, tract-averaging, FA non-specificity, and the heuristic use of Conservation of Resources theory, we argue that their implications deserve further emphasis. Atlas-based tract averaging may obscure regional variability w

The pectinolytic genus Dickeya (formerly Erwinia chrysanthemi) comprises numerous pathogenic species which cause diseases in various crops and ornamental plants across the globe. Their pathogenicity is governed by complex multi-factorial processes of adaptive virulence gene regulation. Extracellular polysaccharides and lipopolysaccharides present on bacterial envelope surface play a significant role in the virulence of phytopathogenic bacteria. However, very little is known about the genomic location, diversity, and organization of the polysaccharide and lipopolysaccharide biosynthetic gene cl

The shoulder joint is the most mobile of all main limb joints. While its primary motion is in a sagittal plane, the shoulder has a significant amount of abduction and adduction, and internal and external rotation. Its stability is ensured by the joint capsule, by its specialized bands (medial and lateral glenohumeral ligaments), and by large tendons located inside (eg, tendon of origin of the biceps brachii muscle) or immediately outside the joint (eg, supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis). Sprains or strains of all supporting structures of the canine shoulder have now

Adhesive capsulitis of the shoulder (also known as frozen shoulder) is a painful and disabling disorder with an estimated prevalence ranging from 2% to 5% in the general population. Although the precise pathogenesis of frozen shoulder is unclear, thickened capsule and coracohumeral ligament (CHL) have been documented to be one of the most specific manifestations. The thickened CHL has been understood to limit external rotation of the shoulder, and restriction of internal rotation of the shoulder has been believed to be related to posterior capsular tightness. In this paper, three cases of refr

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is an exclusively human pathogen able to evade the host immune system through multiple mechanisms. Gonococci accumulate a large portion of phosphate moieties as polyphosphate (polyP) on the exterior of the cell. Although its polyanionic nature has suggested that it may form a protective shield on the cell surface, its role remains controversial. Taking advantage of a recombinant His-tagged polyP-binding protein, the presence of a polyP pseudo-capsule in gonococcus was demonstrated. Interestingly, the polyP pseudo-capsule was found to be present in specific strains only. T

Despite the importance of encapsulation in bacterial pathogenesis, the biochemical mechanisms and forces that underpin retention of capsule by encapsulated bacteria are poorly understood. In Gram-negative bacteria, there may be interactions between lipopolysaccharide (LPS) core and capsule polymers, between capsule polymers with retained acyl carriers and the outer membrane, and in some bacteria, between the capsule polymers and Wzi, an outer membrane protein lectin. Our transposon studies in Klebsiella pneumoniae B5055 identified additional genes that, when insertionally inactivated, resulted

Cavernous haemangiomas are most commonly found in the subcortical white matter, the pons and the external capsule. We present a case of a cavernous haemangioma that appeared as an intraventricular mass at the foramen of Monro. Despite the unusual location the diagnosis was established by MRI because of the typical appearance. The differential diagnosis included primary and secondary neoplasms at the foramen of Monro.

BACKGROUND: Hematoma expansion (HE) is a potential modifier of intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) outcome, yet reducing HE does not necessarily improve prognosis. This may reflect the complex relationship between location, baseline volume, HE, and outcomes, where different locations have varying hematoma growth and differing impacts on prognosis. Prior HE studies have oversimplified location categorization into lobar and deep. Therefore, we aim to investigate how HE varies across more specific location categorization and examine their interactions.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 691 nonanti

BACKGROUND: Hill-Sachs defects have been associated with failed repairs for anterior shoulder instability. However, the biomechanical consequences of these defects are not well understood because of the complicated interaction between the passive soft tissue and bony stabilizers.
HYPOTHESIS: The creation of a 25% Hill-Sachs defect would not significantly alter the glenohumeral translations but would increase the in situ forces in the glenohumeral capsule as well as the glenohumeral bony contact forces.

Current treatments for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) lack real-time inflammatory monitoring and lesion-specific drug delivery, resulting in poor efficacy and systemic toxicity. To address this, we present a smart oral capsule that operates a closed-loop "sense-decide-act" strategy entirely autonomously-sensing and drug release are driven by changes in the digestive tract environment without any external intervention. The capsule features a dual-layer shell sequentially responsive to pH and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enabling colon-targeted delivery and inflammation-specific activatio

OBJECTIVE: It is unclear how alterations in gray matter volume and white matter density affect elderly patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between structural changes in the brain and psychological stress in elderly IBS patients.
METHODS: Eighteen IBS patients and 12 healthy controls underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging. Voxel-based morphometry and diffusion tensor imaging analysis were used to identify abnormalities in cortical regions and white matter, respectively.
RESULTS: The IBS group showed a significant GMV reductio

Over the last decade, the concept of internal impingement has continued to evolve, and the frequency with which this condition is recognised continues to increase. This syndrome should be clearly differentiated from the classical (external) impingement that is thought to be caused by compression of the subacromial bursa, long head of the biceps tendon and rotator cuff (RC) by the coraco-acromial arch. Internal (posterosuperior) impingement syndrome is typified by a painful shoulder due to impingement of the soft tissue, including the RC, joint capsule and the posterosuperior part of the glenoi
